Anyone use NEW or other energy work to increase Athletic Performance?

I have tried energy awareness exercises while running, and find that it is difficult to sense energy while exerting myself, and it reduces my level of concentration, which can be dangerous unless I'm running on the track.  (I fell off a treadmill trying to do this one time!)

I raised this issue on the old Astral Pulse forums, and was interested to see if anyone had any new ideas.

I would theorize that doing energy work regularly (not when running) would help bones, connective tissue and muscle growth, and at the least, recovery from intense workouts.

I have noticed that it is much easier to do energy work after I run.  My body feels much more alive.

Robert Bruce alludes in Astral Dynamics (I think), or maybe it was in the NEW treatise, that the technique could be used in Athletic development.  I would be interested in any info on this.  I did a search on the internet, and haven't found too much yet.  If anyone is interested, I'll post any info I discover, and the results of my experimentation.

I haven't been doing too much energy work/meditation recently, and likewise haven't been too serious with my running.  This is actually kind of good, so I can start from scratch.

My guess is that energy work is most effective when done right before training/competition, and right after.  Plus, I theorize that in order to maximize muscle recovery, the best time to do energy work is right before sleep, to keep energy flowing.  (in addition to the other times)

There is a fascinating book by Dr. Jerry Lynch, called "The Total Runner".  It was written in 1987, and is all about using visualization to achieve your athletic goals.  Basically, it is reality creation (www.wisdomsdoor.com).  Robert Monroe calls it patterning, Magicians and witches call it casting spells.  It is all the same thing, really, using subtle energy to shape your reality.

The technique is to relax, go into a trance (deeper the better without falling asleep), and visualize your goals as vividly and intricately as possible.  Running, basketball, money, love, etc...

This is one more way to use subtle energy to affect physical performance.

kakkarot,
I would think that raising energy would give you more energy to play with.  Certainly exercise and a decent amount of sleep does wonders.

Just doing awareness exercises increases energy flow.

Marker,
my guess is that it won't last.  Most people need more than 4-5 hours of sleep.  Sleep deprivation is great for initiating altered states, but it is much more difficult to control.

The book I mentioned in the earlier post said to do this too.  Most world-class atheletes in any sport rehearse their performances in their heads over and over.

Relaxation is key too, just like with meditation.  It is funny the grimaces that many people have on their faces when they run.  You can just tell they aren't relaxed.  Loosen up your lips into a "fish" look, and you will have more energy for propulusion.  Plus you feel better.

Kifyre said "When engaged in the act of viewing, place and maintain awareness at the back of your head."

This is also the technique that is used for PhotoReading by Pete Bissonette.  Go to www.photoreading.com for more info.  Photoreading is like speedreading.  You keep your awareness at the back of your head, and gulp in the information.  You digest the info later.

Anyhow, that is a bit off topic.  I just wanted to add that energy movment helped my eyesight.

First of all, my eyesight was never bad, but eventually I needed glasses to use the computer and for reading.

I tried several things:  I used energy movement and awareness on my eyes and head.  I reduced the amount of caffiene and sugar I was consuming.  I reduced my stress and got back into a physical exercise program.  I stopped using my glasses, even though it was uncomfortable.

Now I don't need glasses.  My eyes are still sensitive to bright sunlight, not sure why that is, but my vision problems went away.  I think all of those things helped.  The scientific mind in me would say the energy movement/awareness couldn't have possibly worked, but it helped several other things.

It helped a pinched nerve in my neck, a sprained ankle, shortened colds, warmed my feet when my shoes froze after running through streams in the winter, alleviated back pain, etc...

Even after all of this, I didn't think of using it to fix my chronic shoulder condition until a few days ago.  I dislocated it several times in my stupid teens/early twenties.  When I turned 29, I overused it playing computer games! (duh) and it wouldn't work properly since.  (Great pain, limited motion, the bone in the back sticks out at a funny angle.)  In order to raise my right arm over my head, I would have to grab it with my left hand.  This stayed like this for 2 years.

A couple days ago, I started to do energy awareness on the shoulder, and stretch it, do pushups, etc...  Today, I noticed that I can lift my right arm straight up without help from my left!  (first time in 2 years)  It still doesn't feel 100%, but it is a lot better than it was.

BTW, I tried exercises without the energy movement and awareness actions earlier on, and it had no effect, in fact, it made it worse.

Just a little story about what energy movment/awareness with some exercise and positive thinking can do!

Thanks for your reply.  You made some good points.  I'll have to try them out.

I hear stories about eastern monks running up mountains with little effort, etc...  I was just trying to see if anyone had info on how this is done.  Seems like many modern sports are so focused on scientifically measurable aids to training.  I don't argue with their effectiveness, but it seems hollow, like there is another way.

I'll go through the training, and see if energy work helps me.  I'll try to document some techiniques, and post them, in case anyone is interested.

I would imagine that this work would be directly applicable to any endurance sport.  Running, biking, swimming, x-country skiing, adventure racing, and somewhat applicable to other sports.

I think learning martial arts might help with running also.

One more thing about Tool.  They are students of Hermetic knowledge.  I don't know if they all are, but at least 2 band members are.  I learned this from their website www.toolband.com.  They contruct their music with this kind of theme.  In one of thier songs on their latest album, they use the lines "As above, so below", classic Hermetic philosophy.

I always have an interesting time meditating with Tool playing in the background.  (large energy movement sensations)

I have this same problem also.  When I concentrate on the text, it jumbles around and rearranges itself.  Frank and Tracy make a lot of sense that as you process what you have read, you naturally create changes to the astral.

I wonder if you can take a mental "snapshot" or picture of it (like you have one of those jamesbond spy cameras), and then tell yourself you will remember it later (or put it into a mental "folder" for easy access).  Then later, you meditate on the contents of the document or the folder you put it in, and will or ask your higherself to reveal the contents.  In a hypnotic or hypnagogic state, this may work.

I guess that is like dumping the info into a database.  I'll have to try a couple of these techinques.  I guess it all depends on what terminology you are comfortable with.
