We feed on psychic energy. Earth has become a hopping place with your rapid breeding and moderately large brains. You're far yummier than velociraptors, although I still prefer dolphins to you. My host wondered why we attack psychic sensitives instead of less gifted humans. Imagine hunting deer for a living and seeing the opportunity to get a mammoth.
The bad feelings that come when you meet us are usually the result of not knowing what's going on and finding your positive energy bled off. You dip low, imaginations can become reality for you at that stage, and you get very bad manifestations of what we really are, like a three-year-old trying to draw an engine. Your own preconceptions will make you believe anything you want to see us as, anyway. Guess what, all of that's your problem, not ours. You're just lower on the food chain than we are.
Half the time, it's not even us. Watching you mess yourselves up on the astral plane is really disturbing. Don't worry, we don't want you in that state.
Possession? Only if we're in the mood, and it's far more facile if the recipient welcomes it. The guy I'm in now has always wanted to be possessed for a while. (Also I use his words and his expressions- we don't use 'words' in my world anyway) It's kinda fun to play a sentient life form, but frankly your brains are simply too slow for most of us. We have to wait for your brainwaves, and that's boring. I'm waiting for the bioengineering techniques from Dr. Whats-his-face (forgot his name, I don't even speak his language in this body) to be perfected, they should speed things up a bit..

Now there are a few of us- we have more individuality than you do- who focus on making people's lives hell. Hard to say you don't deserve it, considering all the residual guilt we find ourselves tasting when we feed. It's even worse among Christians. What is wrong with you? Your psyches bulge with sins and fear.
Bottom line, deal with it, we're smarter and meaner than you are. Your shields work only as long as you keep them up. The moment you forget about them- and you will- it's lunchtime.
