Why is it that if a person wants to learn about Spirituality/Meditation/Yoga..... that they have to be willing to spend hundreds of dollars to find out?

I have been looking into these topics for a while now and aside from free forum's (thank you to all of the contributors on here) and the occasional free ebook here and there, it is very difficult to find anyone who will teach you anything for free, or even low cost for that matter.

It really seems that there is only so much that you can learn from a book.  Learning from someone "hands on" seems needed, and traditionally it has always been the case.  Perhaps I am confused, but I don't remember any Guru's charging an arm and a leg to teach people their yoga back in the day.  Living up in a cave in a mountain, I guess I wonder what they would do with the money.....

I find these organizations in my local area and they all have outrageous fee's attached to them.  I mean really, is that what it is all about?  It just seems so far from the essence of what it is supposed to be about.  It borders on exploitation IMHO.  It is hard for me to see it as anything more than profiting on the hope and dreams of people.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I have been working on developing my energy for the last week.  Last night I was laying down, relaxing, and trying to get the energy into my sub-naval center.

Now lately, I have really been unable to get it above my thighs but last night I had it all the way up to my hips.  I still didn't feel like it was filling up the sub naval though.

I worked on this for about 1/2 hour and when I was done I had a stabbing kind of pain in my lower back.  It has not gone away yet.  I am pretty new to all of this and I assume that these are unrelated but I figured I would check with the experts.

I know a lot of you out there are adept at meditation.  I really need some assistance in getting started.  What I am looking for is pretty much a step by step guide for dummies...

I just don't really know where to start.  If there is any way to tie it in with energy development that would be nice too.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

HILD (Hypnosis Induced Lucid Dream) Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to hypnotize ones self and, more specifically, how one can induce a large amount of long, vivid, highly lucid, realistic lucid dreams in a short amount of time. Hypnosis is working with your subconscious and dreams are your subconscious' world. That means you can get your subconscious to want you to become lucid.
I've had a lot of experience with this. This tutorial is based on my experience that this is an extremely efficient method. I say this because within a month of starting lucid dreaming I had six lucid dreams in six nights with this method. I'm not saying that this will work as well for everyone who tries this technique as it did for me, just that this is how well it worked for me. Narrate to yourself or in other words use internal dialog. Lay in whatever position is most comfortable to you. Doing this before sleep is probably best, however you may fall asleep if you do it at this time. The following will be in a step-by-step format to keep it simple.

1) Count from one to one hundred while breathing deeply in and out to the rhythm of the counting. In other words you would count one then breath and count two then breath out. This would go back and forth like that until you reached one hundred.
2) Tell yourself that heaviness is moving up your feet, ankles, calves etc. until you reach the scalp. This is, of course, moving from your feet up and involving actually wanting and willing for the heaviness to occur.
3) Tell yourself that weights are being tied to your ankles, waist, neck, and wrists. This too is to be willed to happen.
4) Tell yourself a new heaviness, twice as heavy as the last, is coming down your scalp, face, head, neck etc. until you reach the feet. Of course, yet again, this is to be willed.
5) Tell yourself that bags of sand, twice as heavy as the weights, are being tied to your neck, wrists, waist, and ankles. This too is to be willed.
6) Imagine a chalkboard with the alphabet written across the top and the numbers zero through to nine written along the bottom. Now go through and erase each letter then each number while thinking repeatedly, "Knowledge doesn't matter right now. It does when I'm dreaming and when I'm fully awake. However, all that matters right now is my goal to..." In this case you would say that your goal is to have long, vivid, highly lucid, realistic lucid dreams with full control every night with complete recall of the dreams every morning upon awakening.
7) Imagine a skywriter plane flying overhead, writing out your name. Now, as it flies off, imagine your name blowing away in the wind. Now think to your self, "My identity doesn't matter right now. It will matter when I'm dreaming and when I'm fully awake. However, all that matters right now is my goal to..."Yet again, in this case you would say your goal is to have long, vivid, highly lucid, realistic lucid dreams with full control every night with complete recall of the dreams every morning upon awakening.
8) Say that you will count from one to five and when you reach five your relaxation will double. Now count to five.
9) Say that you will count to from one to ten and when you reach ten your relaxation will triple. Now count to ten.
10) Say that you will count from one to five and that with each count your relaxation will double. Count to five.
11) Say that you will count from one to ten and with each count your relaxation will triple. Count to ten.
12) Say, "From now on I will have at least one lucid dream a night that is long, vivid, realistic, under my complete control, and remembered upon awakening."
13) Say you will count from five down to one and when you do you will be, once again, fully aware. Count down to one.

I find that it takes a night without lucid dreams or a night without any dream recall at all before the suggestions start working. You should probably try to forget you planted the suggestions for them to take the full effect. If your frequency or quality of your lucid dreams go down then you should reinforce the suggestions by doing the procedure over again. You should probably still do reality checks throughout the day for a little extra help and keep a dream journal if you have a difficulty with dream recall. I believe that this is better than conventional methods because you're working with the subconscious rather than against it as in other methods. Just a thought. I hope that everyone has some good luck with this technique.  "

This being the WILD technique.  My question is:  With this method and other sleep methods, when they say to "Say that you will count from one to five and when you reach five your relaxation will double. Now count to five. " Do they mean out loud?

Or when they say "Say "I will have a lucid dream" as you are going to sleep"  Again, do they mean out loud? Or is this all done in your mind?

Sorry for the stupid question, but...... I just want to ensure that I am understanding correctly.

So my dream was pretty scattered at first but it ended up with me in a room full of people.  Weird thing was that we were all sitting on the floor.  It seemed to be almost a party of some sort, or just a group of like minded people?

Anyway, I remember that there was one person in particular who seemed to be the focus of attention in the corner of the room that I was in.  Everyone seemed to be really interested in what he had to say.  I remember that he was wearing a medal for some reason and that was what most people were talking about.  He seemed pretty humble about it, but it definitely seemed to signify that he was of some importance.

Next, I began to realize that the group seemed to be people who were interested/involved/practicing.... somewhat affiliated with Lucid Dreaming/OBE...etc.  So I start talking to a couple of people who were sitting near bye.

I remember that I felt embarrassed because I didn't really know why I was there.  I had to ask one of the people sitting near me "I am so sorry for sounding ignorant, I don't want the answers just spoon fed to me or anything....  I really am trying..." etc " but, how do you know if you are Lucid or not?"

He replied "How do you think I feel?"  looking at me as if he gets asked this a million times a day.  Then his friend leans over and says "You need help?"

I replied "Yes, I do."  Then, she turned around and talked to someone and pointed at me.  All of the sudden, everyone was laying down and they were dimming the lights and closing the curtains.  Then she came up to me and whispered in my ear, "Don't worry, I will be right back"

Then BAM I am back awake.

One side of me really wants to think that I was close to something there.  The other side of me tells me that I have been obsessing on Lucid Dreaming too much lately and my dream was just a reflection of that.

Anyways, I just figured I would share.

So, I just finished "Waking Life" the other day and it really inspired me to work on being able to LD.  I have been doing some reading on it, and I know that I won't be able to do it right away but I am still trying.

Last night I was trying to go to sleep and every time I would start to drift off, my eyes would move to see whatever image my mind had just created.  Every time this happened it would bring me right back to being fully awake, only to repeat it all again.

I am assuming that the problem is just that I am too eager to LD and not just slipping off.  I guess I am curious if anyone else has problems with this.

So 2 questions:
1.  Anyone else feel the need to look around (consequently waking yourself up) as you are trailing off to sleep?

2.  Does anyone else have the overwhelming urge to blink (consequently waking yourself up) when you start trailing off to sleep, even though your eyes are already closed?
