I have found it immensely useful to mentally simulate 'threads' of energy, styled to reflect the intent, like "fiery" has a appearance of flame, orange-red spectrum.
These I use gestures (mental animation and physical movement) to create 3D matrices in the air and interlaced with my E-body.
They resemble living light-serpents.
I usually use 2.

anyone else ever do that?

Psion is a similar idea:

an astral locale, but not an island.

To get there:
enter trance, visualize a red-skinned, mother godess and imagine her opening her legs as if to begin the sexual act.
Make you self very small and sneak into there, and you will enter a door of wood that says 'kallisti' on it.

behind this door there is a field of poppies as far as the eye can see, red ones, orange ones, white ones, and a great iron tree in the center, stretching far far above, branches encumbered with sweet golden apples.

there are entities that live there, who appear differently to each person who goes.
