i wouldnt say chronos was evil.. he was about like zeus. zeus wasn't evil but was sometimes seen negatively because of his quick temper and the fact that he wanted to destroy all of mankind at one point in time..

greek mythology was spawned from sumeria (this isnt accepted by all archaeologists but is obvious. the egyptian, roman, babylonian, and many other ancient religions had pretty much the same epic stories, with the same family trees, and the same 'mythological' activities.), but became distorted on its way. zeus is the greek version of the sumerian 'god' enlil (ie, both enlil and zeus had two siblings, enki/poseidon, ninhursag/hades, and the siblings were each divided up kingdoms on earth, and each sibling was associated with a certain element of (human) nature). enlil's father was anu (greek chronos), but enlil never killed anu and took his throne. that's one distortion. another distortion is that ninhursag was not at all like hades. hades was the greek ruler of the underworld, while ninhursag was essentially a horny medic. she was, however, provided her own kingdom on earth as hades was, and was the 3rd, least important sibling. ninhursag was actually somehow transferred into greek mythology as the goddess of war, athena.

if you look up the individual 'myths' of the sumerian mythology/religion (no one knows what to call it, really), and compare them to the greek mythology, you will see uncanny similarities. i won't go into details on those here because my memory is already a little cloudy (i had difficulty remembering the greek/sumerian counterparts and family tree), and because the post would be so long no one would read it.

strayed a little off-subject, but...

to answer the second part of your question... (in just greek mythology)

chronos ate his first five children beacuse he had foreseen his downfall to the hands of one of his own sons. rhea, his wife, was obviously pretty annoyed at this.. (having kids only to have them be eaten!) so she had a son and fed chronos a rock to fool him. she then took the actual child (zeus) and hid him in a cave..

when zeus grew older he challenged his dad and told him to throw up that rock and those children. zeus ended up fighting the great titans and killing his dad and all that.. and that's how he became king..

again a little more than you asked for but.. heh.. fun topics [:D]
