Yes you are actually helping them. Healing is mostly done through the same method.
The basic idea behind what you are doing in sending positive energy to people is sending them energy of a higher frequency or vibration which then helps boost their own energy body. There's no need to direct it in any particular way as, same with healing energy, the recipient's body knows what to do with the energy and where to best apply it.
What you should be careful of here is what you're source of positive energy is, and also what you're doing with the negative energy.
Forgive me if I'm teling you how to do something you're already doing, but please permit me to waffle on anyway....[]
A good basic technique for giving energy to others is to call down "divine" energy. That is, visualising white/gold light from above, drawn down through your crown chakra, then sent out of you to the other person either through your heart chakra as pink/white light (pink being unconditional love), or through your hands. Doing this not only uses a pure energy source, it helps prevent you from using up your own energy.
As to what to do with the negative energy, don't draw it back into yourself, visualise it coming out of the person and going straight down into the ground. Grounding is also a very important part of energy work, as it keeps you balanced and provides the negative energy with somewhere to go. Don't worry about sending negative energy into the Earth, she knows just how to handle it.
You've done well to work out techniques on your own, but as you say, it's not hard to figure out once you have an idea of what you want to achieve. Just to reassure you again, what you're doing IS effective and does help a lot of people.
