Lost city of Atlantis found?
Researcher claims ruins are in the Mediterranean

LIMASSOL, Cyprus (AP) -- An American researcher claimed Sunday to have discovered the remains of the legendary lost city of Atlantis on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea. But Cyprus' chief government archaeologist was skeptical.

Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning of the seabed between east Cyprus and Syria revealed man-made walls, one as long as 3 kilometers (2 miles), and trenches at a depth of 1,500 meters (1,640 yards).

"It is a miracle we found these walls as their location, and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said, referring to the ancient Greek philosopher.

"We have definitely found the Acropolis of Atlantis," he affirmed, adding the site was 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Cyprus.

The chief government archaeologist of Cyprus, Pavlos Flourentzos, reacted with skepticism, telling The Associated Press: "More proof is necessary."

Sarmast, 38, is an architect by training from Los Angeles. He has devoted the past two-and-a-half years to trying to locate the lost city described by Plato in his dialogues, the Timaeous and the Critias. He spoke to reporters on the "Flying Enterprise," his expeditionary ship, after six days of taking highly sophisticated "side scan" sonars of the seabed.

He said he had chosen the area from data provided by two earlier sonar scans of the east Mediterranean by Russian and French expeditions. His own expedition used more sophisticated equipment, he said.

"We found more than 60-70 points that are a perfect match with Plato's detailed description of the general layout
of the acropolis hill of Atlantis. The match of the dimensions and the coordinates provided by our sonar with Plato's description are so accurate that, if this is not indeed the acropolis of Atlantis, then this is the world's greatest coincidence," he said.

Tests of that part of the seabed showed it had once been above sea level, he said.

"We cannot yet provide tangible proof in the form of bricks and mortar as the artifacts are still buried under several meters of sediment at a depth of 1,500 meters (1,640 yards), but the evidence is now irrefutable," he added.

Asked if the ruins could not be that of another city that sank beneath the waves, Sarmast said the remains match Plato's description of Atlantis so closely that they could not be anything else.

"If you compare it with Plato, you will be astonished," he said. "We hope that future expeditions will be able to uncover the sediment and bring back physical proof."

Plato wrote of Atlantis as an island in the western sea, which has been widely interpreted to mean the Atlantic Ocean. An earthquake undermined the island and it was submerged. But societies dedicated to finding Atlantis remain.

For its time, Atlantis was a highly civilized nation and in legend it has become associated with utopia. The English philosopher Francis Bacon called his 1627 book on the ideal state The New Atlantis.

Flourentzos said it was possible that Atlantis was near Cyprus.

"The myth of Atlantis has been around for ages and it is generally believed that, if it ever existed, it was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean -- hence its name. But ancient cities and civilizations in the Mediterranean region, such as the Minoan civilization of Crete, have disappeared as a result of major volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. For all we know, Atlantis may well have existed in our region."

Sarmast said his expedition had cost about $250,000. The funds came from public donations to his US-based company "First Source Enterprise," which is devoted to the project, sales of his book "The Discovery of Atlantis," and the Cypriot Tourist Organization, which donated $60,000.

He said the book, published in September 2003, said Atlantis was in the east Mediterranean and his latest sonars confirmed it.

I use Mozilla and the page isn't displayed corectly.

The top of the screen looks normal, with the menu bar in blue, but then there's a a big white gap and the word "Forum" followed by another huge gap.  When a page loads, all I see is thw word Forum in the middle (half way down) of the screen on the left.  I then have to scroll down to see the forums/posts.

Is this a local problem or a problem with Netscape in general?
Thanks

ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS TRASH 9/11 MEMORIAL:

Whittier, Ca. - Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up American flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a September 11th memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks and have maintained ever since.

However, although officers witnessed the
vandalism, police did not arrest any protesters
seen damaging the display because they
were "exercising the same freedom of speech
that the people who put up the memorial were," Police Captain John Rees said.

Welcome to Astral Chat! / Fear
March 05, 2003, 08:57:29
I was responding to a post in the prophecy section that was about someone who had a bad feeling about something, and others replied that they too have a bad feeling about something.
Now I'm not saying that they're wrong, or what they're feeling is fake or anything, but I wanted to present a case that maybe they are feeling this because of fear, not because their higher-self is giving them this hunch (idea)... although that's entirely possible, and I could be wrong, but that's ok.  I've only been wrong once before, it's about time to be wrong again. [;)] jk.
Anyways, this was my post:

"How often do you watch the news?  Often, sometimes, never?
The media instills so much fear inside us everyday.  How often do you hear about the good things that are happening around us?  Not very often.  Most of the time you turn on the news, they're reporting another murder, or in the case of the Philadelphia area, a body was found with no organs inside.
Do you know that over the past "x" years (I forget how many) the murder rate has gone down 20% in the US?  Probably not, because at the same time, media coverage on murders went up 600%!  SIX HUNDRED PERCENT!  From watching the news, you would think that the murder rate is on an exponential increase.
Fear is thrown on us everyday, and when it builds up, major problems start happening.  People don't think as clearly, make rational decisions, become paranoid... etc.  I'm not saying that you're definitely not recieving some sort of messages or whatnot, but just take into consideration what is happening in the world around us today, and how much "bad news" we take in, and that maybe these thoughts of something bad about to happen is the buildup of so much fear that you are EXPECTING something bad because according to the media, that's all that seems to happen.  Just my 2 cents."

Fear is a controlling force.  The ability to instill fear is power.  When someone is so afraid of everything, they are more likely to "give in" and are less likely to think and act on their own.  All the evil dictators/rulers in the world's history used fear to gain power.  The key is to not let them (ex. the media) instill so much fear on us.  Next time you are watching the news on TV, and you hear about another murder, ask yourself why you want to watch such depressing stuff and instead change the channel, and watch something funny or interesting.  There are ways to find out current events without the excessive coverage on homicides and suicides happening around you.
A good book about this subject is "The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things" by Barry Glassner

Rebirth

One question often asked is, "What happens to us after death?"
According to the Buddhists, rebirth takes place at the end of this life. Buddhists regard rebirth as a fact. There is evidence that each person has lived many lives in the past and will continue to lives more in the future.

the case for rebirth

RRebirth is a reality although one may not be aware of it. Those who have developed their minds through meditation have confirmed the existence of past lives. Meditators who have attained powers of concentration have been able to recall their previous lives in great detail. The Buddha and His prominent disciples, in many countries and at different times, have been able to prove the existence of past lives. The Buddha, on the night of His Enlightenment, developed the ability to see His past lives. He also saw beings dying in one state of existence and being reborn in another, according to their actions. Thus it was from personal experience that the Buddha taught His followers the truth of rebirth.

In recent years, evidence has been collected and documented which confirms that rebirth is a fact. There have been cases of people who have been able to recollect their experience of previous lives. Their description of places and persons of the past were confirmed after thorough investigations.

The best known example of this is the case of Bridey Murphy. A Mrs. Ruth Simmons of the United States recollected a previous life in Ireland, more than 100 years ago. She said she had been Bridey Murphy in the year 1789 and gave full details of Bridey's life. The details were later checked and found to be quite accurate, although in her present life, Mrs. Simmons had never been outside America.

In another case in England, a woman called Mrs. Naomi Henry recollected two previous lives. In the first instance, she recalled her life as an Irishwoman living in a village called Greenhalgh in the seventeenth century. Research into her case was carried out which revealed that such a village did exist then. In the second instance, she remembered that in one of her previous lives, she was an Englishwoman who became a nurse to several children in an English town called Downham in 1902. A search into the official records kept in Downham proved that such a woman did exist.

Professor Ian Stevenson of the University of Virginia, U.S.A., has researched and published his findings on more than twenty cases of rebirth. These cases, which have been well documented and verified, are from various countries including France, Italy, India, Sri Lanka and Burma.

rebirth in the six realms

Buddhism teaches that birth, death and rebirth are part of the continuing process of change. This is similar to the continuous process of growth, decay and replacement of cells in one's body. According to medical experts, every seven years, all body cells are replaced.

At the moment of death, when this life is over, and the body can no longer survive, the mind is separated from the body. At that time, the craving for life causes one to seek a new existence, and the previous karma determines the place of one's rebirth.

There are six realms in which one may be reborn after death. They are the realms of gods, the demigods, human beings, animals, hungry ghosts and the hells. These are just general categories and within each, there exist many sub-categories. The six realms of existence include three relatively happy states, and three relatively miserable states. The realms of the gods, the demigods and human beings are considered to contain more happiness and less suffering. The realms of animals, hungry ghosts and the hells are considered to be relatively miserable because living beings there suffer more from fear, hunger, thirst, heat, cold and pain.

In general, wholesome actions such as good conduct, charity and mental development, are the causes of rebirth in the happy realms of gods, demigods and human beings. On the other hand, unwholesome actions such as immoral conduct, miserliness and cruelty cause rebirth in the unhappy realms of animals, hungry ghosts and the hells.

One need not wait until rebirth to imagine what existence in other realms is like. For instance, when one is intensely happy or totally at peace with oneself, one experiences a state similar to that of the gods. When baser instincts are followed and one is totally preoccupied with eating, sleeping and sex, existence is like that of the animals. Then again, when one is overwhelmed by fear and pain, or is tortured and killed in this life, one experiences suffering like that of the hells.

Of all the six realms, the realm of human beings is considered the most desirable. In the realm of human beings, the conditions for attaining Nirvana are better. In general, in the unhappy realms, the suffering of living beings is so intense and ignorance so great that they are unable to recognize the Truth and follow the path to attain freedom. Alternatively, living beings in the realms of the gods and demigods experience so much happiness and have so many distractions that they do no think of rebirth until is too late. Then they may be reborn in one of the lower realms of suffering. In the realm of human beings, however, people experience both happiness and suffering, and are intelligent enough to recognize the Truth and follow the path to attain freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, one is indeed fortunate to be born as a human being, and should remember that the principal cause of birth in this realm is Good Conduct.

the cycle of birth and death

The Buddha pointed out that whenever one is reborn, whether as a human being, as an animal, or as a god, none of these states of existence is permanent. The average life span differs for living beings in the six realms of existence but none of them lasts forever. Eventually, rebirth will take place. The realm into which one is reborn and one's conditions of rebirth are determined by past and present actions. This is the law of karma at work.

Because of the force of their karma, people are born and reborn endlessly in one realm of existence or in another. The Buddha declared that there is no permanent rest in this cycle of birth and death. It is only when one follows the Noble Eightfold path taught by the Buddha and eventually attains Nirvana, that one finally becomes free from this ceaseless cycle and gains supreme and permanent happiness.

People who understand karma and rebirth see life in a better perspective. They understand that every action they perform will have its effects now and in the future. The knowledge gives them hope and strength in the face of difficulties. It gives them courage to continue doing good. They are convinced that they will experience the good effects of their wholesome actions either in the short-term or in the long-term.

Welcome to Astral Chat! / Bush vs Saddam Debate
February 25, 2003, 16:48:55
Washington has already said No to any debate, but do you think Bush should accepts Saddam's proposal for a televised debate?

The way I think of it is if Bush KNOWS he's right and has nothing to hide himself, why not?  Bush saying absolutely not about this makes me wonder about him.

I don't know... I have a couple friends in the armed guard who have been sent over and I would really like to see them again...[V]  But I know the worst thing to do for the troops over seas is to question why they're there.  They need to know that the country they are fighting for are behind them.

Still, I think Bush is being too aggressive about all this.  Saddam IS a bad guy and SHOULD be disarmed/removed, but I think we should take some time, and gather ALOT more world support.  I see no proof of imminent danger that would force us to deal with Saddam right now.

I know Americans aren't the most loved people in the world, and this whole thing isn't going to make us better in the eyes of everyone else.

Sorry for the rambling, I was watching a nightly news program on TV and some of the stuff on it just got me all heated up and ticked off.  Time to cool down for a bit. [}:)]

Hey all!

My dad goes in for heart surgery tommorrow at the age of 52.  I just got back from the hospital tonight. They're doing a lot of x-rays and preparations right now.  The heart surgery he's heaving isn't as risky as some others, but surgery in general can always be risky.  He'll be in the hospital for 5 days, and then he comes home and will be pretty much wiped out for several months.  He's taking a 3 month leave from work.  If you could just take 5 seconds and send a prayer that he'll make a quick and successful recovery, it would be greatly appreciated. He's in St. Francis hospital in Wilmington, DE, USA if you need a location to send it to.  Thanks so much!

Welcome to Energy Body and The Chakras / Ki Ball?
February 18, 2003, 11:50:33
Hey all.

Yesterday around 2:00pm I laid down with the intent that I was going to have my 1st successful OBE.  Unfortunately there were some disractions that got in my way, so after roughly an hour or so of energy-raising and trying to project, I stopped and opened my eyes.  I felt a good bit of energy running through me so I decided to try to make a ki ball.  I've only read a few things about them on his board, so my knowledge on them isn't that great, but I started channeling energy up through my legs, up my torso, down my arms and out my hands that were cupped like as if you were holding a bug you caught, but they weren't touching at all.  After about 4 waves of energy I started to feel a "force" where the ball would be if formed.  It got stronger with each wave.  If I tried to move my hands closer together, they would get repelled, like 2 magnets with same poles.  I don't know if I could force them together if I really tried because I didn't want to destroy anything I may have been making.  Anyways, I did a few more waves and then I opened my eyes, and didn't see anything so I held my hands together flat with palms up and "blew" whatever would have been there into the air.  Does my experience sound like a "ki-ball" experience?  Or was it something else (like my imagination... lol) [;)]
Thanks

Hey all.

I'm looking into learning a martial art and I was wondering which ones are better for energy raising and/or spiritual development rather than focusing only on self-defense (or sometimes even first strike attacks).  I was looking at Tai Chi (sp?) but I read somewhere that it is more like a dance than a classical "martial art".  I live in a Philadelphia suburb so I have access to many different types or martial arts, so that isnt really much of a concern.  Although Kung Fu might be difficult to find a good, genuine instructor. (so I hear)

Any suggestions?

Hello
I have a couple questions about something i've been looking into recently..  the antikythera mechanism.

(1)What civilization/peoples/beings built the mechanism?
(2)It is suggested that it is 2,000 years old.  Is that assumption correct?
(3)Scientists are mostly unsure exactly what it does, but they are pretty sure it has to do with calculating the movements of stars and planets... is there more to this mechanism or is that the exact purpose of it?
(4)Are there more mechanisms or machines similar to the antikythera mechanism or machines built by the same civilization that remains undiscovered/hidden?
(5)would a working re-creation of such a mechanism be valuable to us, or has it become obselete?

I have some other questions on other subjects, but will wait as it looks like SD has alot to ask about already  =)

I agree with you too James.  I've been visiting this site almost since it was started, but have only recently started posting.  I'm one of those people that like to sit back and watch to understand more before involving myself.

I have noticed the same things stated above.  A lot more bashing and semi-useless posts.  Adrian should make a sticky at the top of each forum outlining a couple simple rules like:

1)Search first before you post
2)No flaming/bashing other members
3)Keep topics in the forums they belong in.  (i've been seeing alot of stuff in other forums that should be in the Astral Chat forum)

I dunnno, I'm sure there's other simple rules that can be stated... im just too lazy to think of more right now  [:D]

I also use CDex.

About the copyright enfringements...
Well, what about cassette tapes?  The industry didn't mind then?  So now what you can do it with high-quality CDs they care?  If they wanted to be against copying of music, they should have started their battle against it with cassette tapes.
Also, I don't feel bad for the record companies one bit.  In fact I'm happy they're losing money.  Recording companies are practically scam artists.  Musicians make almost NO money from record sales.  They make most of their money from going on tour.  All the hundreds of million dollars the recording industries get from record sales goes right into the recording company's pockets.  [}:)]

Welcome to Astral Chat! / The true costs of war

quote:
Of course everyone wishes the troops safety, but let us not forget that they are there of their own freewill. Not one member of the military is there against their will - they are there because they want to fight, and use the weapons of war against fellow human beings - their brothers and sisters - have no illusions about that. If they did not enjoy fighting, war, destruction and killing, they would not have exercised their own freewill to do it. What do you think these military personell believe cruise missiles are for - it sure isn't to put on an expensive firework display. Likewise for the tanks they drive, the aircraft they fly and the assault weapons they carry to kill people with - they are not being force to do this - they are doing it because they chose to do so.

True, my friends did choose to enroll in the Guard, but not because they enjoy killing... [:O] I'm actually shocked that point was made.  Just because someone enrolls in the military does not mean they want to go around killing people...!  I don't know anyone that wants to do that.  They enrolled to protect their home, their state, their country.  Not to mention they also go to a good university and needed help paying their tuition.  If we lived in like Sweden or someplace where tuitions are payed for by the government, I don't know if my buddies would have enrolled.  I might have to ask them that when they get back.  But the fact of the matter is that they are over there right now, following orders.  They don't get to pick which assignments or missions they're gonna go on.  It's not up to them.
They're not blind, deaf, or dumb either.  They know what's going on in their country and around the world.  They know about the protests around the world protesting against why they're there.  I think it's time we concentrate on supporting them and getting them home asap.

God bless the troops. (All of them, not just the Americans, but the British and the Australians and the many other troops from all around the world)

Ethan

EDIT: 3 or 4 messages were posted while I was typing my last message.  Obviously this thread is stirring up some emotions.  I'm going to stay out of further arguements as I don't see any good coming out of this and don't see it going anywhere but downhill.  I don't want war, war is horrible.  Not to sound like a "post-60's hippie", but love and peace is what we should all strive for, but I don't see it making a sudden appearance today.  Today we should focus on bringing the troops home and supporting them until then.
Whatever.  I need to go cheer up now. [}:)]  (War is depressing)

I think we should all start supporting the troops that have been sent over instead of bickering back and forth about something we have no control over.  The troops need to know that the countries they are from support them while they lay their lives on the line.  No one WANTS war, but there comes a point where you must start "supporting" it whether you like it or not.  I have friends in the Armed Guard that have been sent over, and I know that they just want to be supported by their country and get this over with.  In fact, I feel like a horrible friend sitting back here in the states watching it unfold on TV as their putting their lives in danger.  Who knows, I might never see them again... (God forbid)

Whether you're anti-war, anti-US, anti-protests, anti-anything, please sit back for a moment and remember that fellow countrymen and possibly friends or family are over in the Middle East, and that they need your support.

I don't support the war, I support the troops.

I know what you mean PW... The more and more you hear about what happened, the weirder it gets.

I've read of cases where kidnap victims start to grow a bond with their kidnappers and sometimes feel sorry for them.  But something totally different was going on here...  I don't know what though.  I mean, they would go out in public places with a veil over her head and when asked who she was she would give the person a fake name.  And she talks in almost a shakespearish language.  When she was finally found, she wouldn't even cooperate with the cops.  It took them a while to get her to admit who she was... acutally, she never admitted who she was.  The cops kept asking if she was Elizabeth Smart and she would say something like: "whatever think thou"
I mean, it seems like she did not WANT to be found.
Also, her and the kidnapper was living like 2 miles north of her house for a while, and even went into her hometown a couple times.
I'm sure she could have escaped if she wanted to... but I have a feeling she didn't want to.

I don't know.  It's all pretty weird.  But it's good that's she home with her family again.

The movie was filmed in a town that 2 of my friends live in.  Actually, you can see my friend's house in some of the scenes.
And these events really did occur, it's not fiction.  Although I haven't actually seen the movie yet, so I don't know if they fictionize it a bit.
Very strange phenomenon though.
