This is a good list of some of the benefits:

I'm not sure if they are related but that sounds like the right temporal lobe that is talked on in the article here: http://www.astralpulse.com/articles/others/articles_34.htm

This very well may be something in the brain that helps induce OBEs.  The problem is that many people make the idiotic assumption that explaining the trigger of an experience explains the experience.  This is not true at all because all this explains is a trigger.  NDEs have even been induced by orgasms but you can hardly think that does anything to provide an explanation for the experience.  It really doesn't matter how many triggers that they discover like this or with drugs because they will never explain the OBE.  These brain areas that are related to OBEs probably don't generate the experience they just allow it to happen.

There isn't even a remotely logical or scientific reason to assume that hallucinations are generated by the brain, even though they probably contain creations of the mind.

I had my first concrete conscious projection earlier today (read about it here) and I feel the critical component in my success was surrendering totally to the experience. I've almost always been blocked by nervous fear-based internal dialogue or surface thought, but today I wasn't going to let fear stop me. I affirmed, "I surrender myself to the experience," my mind cleared and fear left, and I was out! So in my opinion, it is critical to fully accept the experience and embrace it in order to succeed.

I really wish that I could surrender to the experience like that.

Just this morning I had literally around 15 separations that came on in a row and I messed up each one because I couldn't let go of myself like usual.  I was getting some cool moving scenes behind my eyes but when the vibes hit I could only stay calm for a very brief moment.  I had a really nice short AP yesterday which wasn't scary at all but that still didn't help.  I haven't been keeping track but so far I'm sure that I have screwed up over 100 separations due to panic.

It's good to see that they are testing it that way, and I hope it turns up some good results.  Maybe they should test etheric projectors instead since it would be more controlled and easier to replicate.  One concern I have is that to keep it out of normal view they will probably have to hide the targets somewhere up near the ceiling.  But people with NDEs usually report floating around the room while having their sight fixed downward on their bodies and the doctors around.  Also they most likely won't be aware that there are any targets to be identified plus with such an experience with all the aspects of the NDE that would probably be the least of their concerns.

It would probably be best for anyone wanting personal verification to meet somewhere like API in the astral.  My level of consciousness in my first experience and all the sensations that come on is proof enough for me.  From the sound of it real-time projections seem too hard to stay in for testing.  But maybe there are people who are good with them that may be able to do it, I had a real-time projection before but I couldn't move at all since I was stuck floating a few feet above my body.

One thing that highly suggests that OBEs occur outside of the brain is with the consistency of information brought back though all different cultures in NDEs.  If these experiences were hallucinations you would expect them to be shaped by people's beliefs and expectations since they are interpreted as trips into the afterlife.  This doesn't seem to be the case at all with NDES.  There are so many common aspects like the light, life review, the tunnel, void, etc.  An example of the information being consistent is with the life review.  Many people seem to have the idea of some kind of judgment from God in the afterlife where God will decide if you are good or bad.  Yet throughout different cultures and afterlife beliefs people who have the life review consistently experience self judgment of their actions rather than God or another being judging them.  Also many people believe in the existence of Satan in hell but out of all of the hellish NDEs there hasn't been a reported account of someone seeing Satan.  This isn't hard scientific evidence but it has been studied a lot and strongly suggests that it's a real afterlife experience rather than the imagination of people who have these experiences.

I just started to reading through all Frank's posts and he certainly is very knowledgeable and helpful.  Hopefully he just took time off to do something like write a book on AP.

I get SP all of the time and don't mind it anymore.  The scientific explanation may be correct as to what happens in the body but it could never explain the experience that is taking place.  Any bodily processes that occur during sleep are really irrelevant to the nature of what is happening during an AP.  It only explains the processes in the body that help the mind get to the point of the experience.  If science were to explain projection it would have to somehow become measurable to the third person perspective which seems next to impossible.

Have you hear of Occam's razor?

This is strictly a philosophical rule not a scientific law of any kind.  Usually what is scientifically discovered is in most cases for from simple.  You could say that the people who thought the earth was flat were using Occam's razor because it was the simplest explanation at the time.

Thanks for the advice Jeff.  I'll be sure to do that the next time I get out.

I know that someone on this forum posted a while ago about successfully doing the card experiment.  Just do a search on card trick.

If you're interested in something that suggests that AP is real a good area to look into is NDEs which are much more powerful events that are linked to AP.  There have been many cases of people identifying things they couldn't see.  The information brought back from NDEs throughout different cultures and beliefs has been too consistent to be just a hallucination.  Here is a good overview of some of the evidence for NDEs:  http://www.near-death.com/evidence.html

Also wasn't there already some kind of successful verification with API?

These tips have been very helpful.  I really worked on relaxing my eyes along with the other tips and was able to project this morning and I also had an AP 2 days ago.

Panic at separation.  I probably messed up 100+ separations because of this.  I just freak out and want back when I lose control of my body and when the vibes are intense.  I have been doing a little better recently, I had an OBE last night because the separation wasn't bad and didn't last long but it usually is.

Losing concentration is also a problem.

I think someone may have tried to pull me out a few days ago.  I became conscious and everything looked and felt normal so I thought I was in the physical then I heard someone behind me talking.  They grabbed my hands which started vibrating a little and I started slowly sliding across the bed which felt very real, I was startled and confused thinking I was still in the physical so I woke up.

I had an experience where someone may have been asking me about API.  This morning I had 5 very short LD's that I kept phasing in and out of.  Then I became conscious and thought I was in the physical lying in bed because everything looked the same and I could feel the covers over me just like normal.  Then someone I couldn't see came up behind me and grabbed my hands which then started vibrating and they said something about island music and I think they asked me if I wanted to go to the island and I thought they meant API at the time.

I still was thinking I was in the physical because of how real it was and I started slowly floating across the bed which startled me and it ended.  I'm not sure if this was an LD or someone trying to take me to API or maybe some other place but it was the first time in a while that I didn't panic and screw up a AP or LD when it came on.  Edit: I just realized that I may have been pulled out by someone because I started sliding across the bed after hearing the voice and having my hands grabbed.

Right before my first projection I had an experience that seemed to be inline with the mind split theory where there were 2 copies of me that I was experiencing at the same time.  The exit and vibrations came on then I freaked out and rolled over to my side but I was seeing out of 2 different sets of eyes one set was looking straight up at the ceiling and seemed normal and my other set of eyes was shifting all over the place and couldn't stay steady plus it was viewing the side wall instead of the ceiling.  About 20 minutes after that I had my first projection.

I'm pretty good now at bringing the vibrations on but I've only been able to go through with it about 3 times due to fear of separation.  I have noticed a big increase in intuition and precognition while awake and dreaming that is becoming regular.  An example of when this happened was today I had music playing and a random song popped into my head that I got the urge to listen to and it had been a long time since I heard it then it was the next track to come on.  That randomly happening by chance seems unlikely because my playlist has almost 13 thousand mp3's to shuffle through and it's set for random playback plus it was a track I hadn't heard in a while.

One other thing that I noticed is that my brow chakra is active almost 24/7 which doesn't bother me at all.  The more concentrated I am the more intense it gets.

I don't think it's losing the money that would ever keep him from giving a fair challenge it's his reputation and ego.  His whole career is based on debunking and discrediting the paranormal so he would look like a complete idiot if someone showed him to be wrong after all he has done.  He seems to have too big of an ego to ever let that happen and give an unbiased challenge.

I heard something about it when looking up SP and got really interested when I saw a little about ap at near-death.com.

Are there going to be scheduled meeting times at APL anytime soon?
#122
Sounds like you were very close to separating.  In the 3 OBEs that I've had I heard the rumbling sound right before I separated, there have been a countless amount of times that I screwed it up when that happened because of fear and panicking.

I took the lessons and would recommend against mystic web even though some of their projection techniques can be useful.  It's too much like a cult, when I was there most of the people were extremely dogmatic about the teachings and they would always discourage going to any other source on projection and spiritual stuff plus they had a lot of censorship.

His challenge is just a pubicity stunt.  Well known people with paranormal abilities would be taking a huge risk even if they can replicate their powers since Randi is extremely biased and only is out to expose fruads.  It's questionable if the paranormal powers can be done with such negativity.  Here are a few articles about the challenge:

There have been cases where blind people were able to see in NDE's:
http://www.near-death.com/experiences/evidence03.html

I think this is very suggestive of separation of the consciousness.  If the astral was just a brain based dream then blind people probably wouldn't know what seeing would be like in order to create that experience.  With the out of body interpretation they are able to see because they are using their non-physical eyes unrestricted from the physcial since they aren't conscious in the physical body which has the blind set of eyes.
