Alchemy is a spiritualism in a labratory enviroment where you should be able to verify your progress trough the results. Since after a while you will begin to defy normal prosesses in chemistry wich was built upon the material aspect of alchemy.
The philosophers stone and the elexir of life is the result of the magus opus (Great work) in alchemy . From the sources i read it seems when the great work is completed the ingredients will separate into a solid state(the stone) and a liquid component (the elixir).
While theres probably some experiments containing mercury in alchemy , its not an art in ingesting poisenous material . It is about getting to the spiritual states inherent in matter and separete it ,refine it , and either build on the previus results in a bigger experiment or get it in a form that is nonpoisenous.
Just like magic it is rich on symbols the diffrence is where mages cast spells based on their understanding of the spiritual and symbols
,alchemist perform a experiment. Mercury is also a symbol in alchemy wich can mean the fluidness of spirit. So its not given that the magus opus needs actual Mercury (Hg!).
But off course i havent read any books of how to perform such a work so i wouldnt know what is required . Only that the spiritual understanding gotta be far greater than physical nessecitys. Its a popular alchemy saying that "You cannot make gold without having gold" , i guess the latter is a refrence to whats inside you.
