Not too long ago as I was fallnig asleep I became clairvoyant, or in other words gained astral sight- just for a few seconds- and saw what looked like a spider, a HUGE spider, crawling accross the bed frame.  It was black with glowing golden markings- it scared the heck out of me and I woke up completely and with a huge jump (and not this doesn't have anything to do with the movie SPIDERMAN!- it was before I saw the film).

Does anyone know anything about astral spiders, insects?  Could this thing possibly have been feeding on my energy?

I, for the most part, project and experience projection related phenomena when I am laying on my back...but I have experienced vibrations and projection while laying on my side and stomach.  I am wondering what you all think about the importance of boduly positioning and also wonder if you know why some positions are more conducive to projection and energy work than others...

It really bothers me that the media, thanks to the personal agendas of certain political figures, are trying to place blame on Bush and others.  Of course in retrospect we all wish that certain warnings would have been taken more seriously, but that's attributed to hind sight.  Only one group is responsible for what happened on Sept. 11: the terrorists themselves.

...I think it's funny when I post something which I think is very intruiging/interesting and then like thirty of forty people look at it and no one replies.  I am sure this happens to us all because I see that I am not the only one.  Anyway, I think it just goes to show how subjective life really is...it reminds me of the quote "One man's garbage is another man's treasure" or something to that effect.  It actually seems like some of the more controversial posts get the most attention, for obvious reasons.  Anyway, it never hurts my feelings when this happens to me for it just makes me think "Cool, I guess some of my ideas are truly mine..."

Anyway, I really love this new forum.  It's funny how the chit-chat forum has become one of the most popular forums on the website.  Deep down we are all like a bunch of hill billy mystics relaxin' out on the porch in the summer evening, chewing up our minds and spitting out our thoughts with the hopes others will have something to add or enlighten...

I cut/pasted this from the posts under the psychic attack poll...the entire message Robert posted can be found there.  Anyway, I just wanted to add that I have personally found this to be true.  When I first began to project, I thought I was being bombarded by attacks from negative entities.  It wasn't until later that I realizes that themajority of these "attacks" were actually just products of the fear barrier and "self-created" negative thought forms.  

I also agree with Robert that the majority of so called attacks come from entities that are attached to us because of our behavior in the physical.  If we have a great deal of negative energy in our lives due to our behavior (ie. we are abusive, ill-tempered, addicted to ______ (fill in the blank with whatever you coose, ie. drugs, pornography, etc.) then we are likely being attacked while in waking conscious and of course when we sleep and/or project.  

The bottom line is that the less negativity we have in every aspect of our lives, the less negativity we attract.

The Method

*Relax in a bed or reclining chair.

*Take deep breaths, allowing your breath to slow naturally. Do not force it to slow down.

*Induce sensations of "dropping" rapidly through the bed, several "inches" at a time. These must be quick "drops", not slow sinking feelings.

*Continue until you feel yourself "on the floor" and then rise up again.

*Allow yourself to drift towards sleep, pulling yourself back each time... but do NOT physically move your body. You should being feeling very heavy.

*As you drift towards sleep, you will see images. Use these images or create your own to focus on and stay aware.

*Soon you will feel vibrations. These are mild and you must remain passive.

*Visualize yourself floating above your body and feeling the "drops". As soon as you have left your body, you will know, mostly at first by the following sensation followed by a temporary "blindness" and lightweight feeling.


Remember:

This will take practice, so give it time! Remember, once you are out, move far away from your body or you may be pulled back in. When you want to return, simply visualize your body and being back in it.

Greetings!

I have a quick question: sometimes as I am relaxing and getting ready to enter the trance state (laying on my back in bed), I suddenly feel like my body/head is tilted to the right side.  The first time it happened I really thought that I had somehow rolled over slightly to my side....is this common or I am I just weird?

If anyone has had a similar experience or knows about this, please share your thoughts.  Thanks!

Caution:
To be fair, the prophets did not claim to be pre-empting 20th century science (or 21st century science for that matter). If true, we should expect their words to be more in tune with the science of ten thousand years' time than the science of today. An example is the concept of energy. We may see it as simply a way of defining heat or work – a property to be measured in Joules. But a superior being might see it in terms of universal electromagnetic interactions, or in terms of its powerful and most subtle effect – life.

Energy and "the light of Christ":
Another thing to remember is that most of the quotations come from the ninetenth century, and use nineteenth century language and are based on ninteenth century understanding od scientific concepts. So, for example, the prophets only use the word "energy" in the sense of human energy. What we would call "energy" is closest to what they would have called "spirit" in the sense of "light." (Incidentally, the whole concept of "energy" as a substance can be highly misleading. Richard Feynmann comments on this in his autobiographical book "Surely You Must be Joking, Mr Feynmann." But I digress.)

Vague Wording?
More importantly, and what annoys those of a scientific disposition, is that the prophets' words do not have physical precision. But that is simply because they are not writing for the physics laboratory. They are writing for real-world human experience, and the general reader. So carefully selected ambiguity and connotations are sometimes more important than the primary denotation of a word.

Quantum Physics and the Nature of Reality
Avoiding Pseudo-science:
Just as most people misunderstand the revelations relating to intelligences and God, so people usually misunderstand modern theoretical physics.

"Quantum physics introduces an observer-dependency that the popular press has blown out of proportion. ... There is a huge amount of pseudo-science to avoid in learning the lessons of the quantum." – see the summary of quantum principles at www.mountainlake.com/beyond/complem2.htm

All deep concepts are inevitably misunderstood. To avoid adding to the confusion, I will simply quote from articles from New Scientist, a highly reputable science magazine:

What is Quantum Physics (Apart From the Most Successful Scientific Theory Ever)?

"[Max Planck's] discovery was ... that radiation, like matter, comes in discrete quantities. And he called his little packets of energy "quanta" from the Latin for amount. ... Planck was unsettled by the implications of quantum theory. If you accept its conclusions nothing is what it seems, or what common sense and Newtonian physics lead you to believe. Things change when you look at them. Objects behave in unpredictable ways."

A Simple Example of Quantum Physics in Practice:

"Think of light reflected from a mirror. No mirror is perfect, so perhaps 95 per cent of the light bounces off the mirror's surface, while the other 5 per cent passes through, or is absorbed or otherwise lost. [So,] 19 out of every 20 photons bounce off the surface while the rogue photon goes its own way. Who decides what each individual photon should do?"

[Later research showed that this uncertainty also applied to physical matter – which Einstein showed was equivalent to energy anyway. All kinds of other weird implications arise as well.]

Why is This So Important?

"Here lies the revolution. Quantum theory says that what happens to any individual photon is genuinely and inescapably unpredictable. It has a 95 per cent chance of being reflected, and a 5 per cent chance of being transmitted or absorbed, and that's all there is to it. There's nothing about any photon, no secret property or hidden clue, that can tell you any more precisely than that what it will do. The unpredictability is innate." ...

"You can see why physicists of the old school found quantum theory confusing, alarming and quite possibly dangerous. It seems as if the photon has no reliable properties of its own, and only reluctantly acquires them as a sort of conspiracy between it and the measuring device. The nature of reality it implies recalls Gertrude Stein's comment about the unremarkable city of Oakland, California: 'There's no there there.' "

Do We Know How the Universe was Created?

"The good news is that quantum theory seems not to allow a singularity such as the big bang. The bad news is that no one knows what it would put there instead." ... "Wind the cosmological clock backwards, and there comes a moment when classical theory demands that particles be confined in a space smaller than the uncertainty principle permits. Quantum theory draws a modesty-preserving screen across what would otherwise be a naked singularity. To look behind that screen, and to understand how the Universe might emerge from it, requires a theory that marries quantum principles with classical general relativity. And so far, no one has figured out a way of doing that." ...

"One popular idea these days is superstring theory, which proposes that fundamentally there are no particles. Instead, there are tiny wiggly loops of energy, the equivalent of mathematical lines rather than mathematical points." ... "But fairly major difficulties remain. For starters, the world of superstrings has 10 dimensions, and the only way the theory can explain the four-dimensional world we live in (three space dimensions, plus time), is to wrap up six of the ten dimensions so tightly that we don't see them. [This is no longer true – see New Scientist magazine, 18th December 1999, p 8, "The Great Beyond"] The trouble is that the dimensions won't roll up of their own accord."

Is Science (Without God) Easy to Believe?

"'Do not take the lecture too seriously ... just relax and enjoy it. I am going to tell you what nature behaves like. If you will simply admit that maybe she does behave like this, you will find her a delightful, entrancing thing. Do not keep saying to yourself "But how can it be like that?" because you will get ... into a blind alley from which nobody has yet escaped. Nobody knows how it can be like that.'

"This was Richard Feynman, speaking about quantum theory. It pays to take his warning seriously. ... The quantum world really is different, and the only way to come to grips with it is to suspend disbelief."

Is There an Alternative to Attributing Life to Sub-atomic Particles?
Brigham Young stated that all matter – even the tiniest particle – has intelligence. He stated this long before quantum theory posed the problem of unpredictability. But can quantum theory suggest any other solutions? www.newscientist.com/nsplus/insight/quantum/30.html describes one popular solution, proposed by Hugh Everett in 1957. I ask the reader: which is more likely to be true?

"He proposed that whenever a quantum measurement is made, different universes "split off" – one for each of the possible outcomes. We see one particular result because we are in the universe in which that one happens. In the other universes, our counterparts are seeing one of the other results, and so on through as many universes as you like. ... Are they real or not? You decide. Argument over 'interpretations' of quantum theory has been long and, some might say, ultimately pointless, since by design they all produce the same practical results. It's really a question of which mental picture of the quantum world you find most pleasing."

Can God (or Some Spirit) Control an Atom Without Being There?
The same article concludes:

"The nature of [the problem of quantum physics] is, fundamentally, a concept called "non-locality." Classical physics embodies a strictly local law of cause and effect. What happens at point A can have an immediate effect only at point A, and if the effect makes its presence felt at point B, some physical influence has to travel from A to B, taking some finite time to do so. Quantum theory is non-local. In an EPR experiment, a measurement at point A has an elusive, instantaneous and – through Bell's theorem – quantifiable influence at point B. Whether anything physical travels from A to B is debatable. In Bohm's theory, the pilot wave carries that instantaneous influence. In Everett's idea, non-locality is dispersed throughout the many universes. However you look at it, non-locality just happens in the quantum world. There's no getting away from it."

Does Reality Require a Conscious Observer in Order to be Organised?

"Traditionally, following Niels Bohr's lead, arguments about the nature of measurement in quantum theory have assumed a clear distinction between the quantum system that's being measured and a separate classical system that's doing the measuring. At one extreme is the belief that measurements become real only when there's a conscious human observer around to notice them.

"This sort of philosophy causes trouble when applied to the Universe as a whole. Stars, planets and galaxies are quantum systems like everything else. But are we to imagine that the whole Universe remained in a state of cosmic quantum indeterminacy until human beings evolved consciousness? And when during the dawning of human consciousness was the Universe forced to drop its cloak of quantum indeterminacy and take on solid form? Put this way, the argument seems absurd, but on the other hand if the Universe congealed into a classical solidity before we came upon the scene, what sort of measurements or observations accomplished the transformation?"

Notice that the whole problem is solved if we believe in God, the original observer.

Do Any of the Theories Suggest There is no Room for God?
[The above article suggested some attempts at explaining what quantum theory really means – all the attempts have serious problems.]

"While these ideas may be comforting, they don't come close to a specific explanation of why our Universe looks the way it does...

"Einstein, on the other hand, wondered fondly if the laws of physics allowed the Lord any choice in the creation of the Universe. So far, it seems, the answer is plenty. The uncertainty principle, which Einstein never liked, says that you can't always get what you want. And in the broadest possible terms, perhaps it applies to the limits of our knowledge about the Universe we find ourselves in. We can always ask questions, but we may not always be entitled to answers."

How Could God Create – AND MAINTAIN – Quantum Physics?
This is where we get into REALLY deep stuff. I won't even try to go into some of the exotic attempts at grand Unified theories, but the important point it that, in principle, a sufficiently powerful and knowledgeable being (e.g. God) could change everything in the universe by making very simple, fundamental changes. Or the truth may be even simpler – that the whole physical universe is simply a manifestation of knowledge – that is, intelligence, light and truth, really is a form of matter. A very promising looking theory is being developed by Roy Frieden, based on the concept of "Fisher information" (see New Scientist, 30 January 1999, p.24). This is all very theoretical, so I will leave it at that.

Will Scientists Always Accept New Information?
Of course not. Scientists are human, just like you and me. For example, Max Planck is one of the greatest scientists ever – as the discoverer of quantum physics, he is right up there with Einstein. As www.newscientist.com/nsplus/insight/quantum/5.html recalls:

"It rapidly became clear that the "quantisation" of energy – dividing it up into individual pieces – was actually a new and fundamental rule of nature. The classically trained Planck didn't like this conclusion one bit. He resisted it to his dying day, prompting his famous lament that new scientific theories supplant previous ones not because people change their minds, but simply because old people die."

I love the new format, but it's seems to load MUCH slower than the old one.  At school I am on with a high speed connection so it doesn't make much of a difference, but at home I use a 56k modem and it seems to take quite a bit of time to load the pages.  Will it speed up with time or do we have to sacrifice a little bit of upload speed the all of the wonderful new features?  No biggie, but just thought you might want to know incase you only use high speed and don't know how it loads with a 56K.

Hello everyone!

I just got done faxing an order over to the Monroe Institute for a the single CD "Transcendence" which I purchased from the catalog list at www.hemi-sync.com/catalog.  I would have loved to been able to purchase the first set of the Gateway program, but as of now I am too strapped for cash to make that kind of purchase (I'm young, in school and about to get married so I have to make my money go a long way these days...I am sure many of you understand!)

Anyway, my question is for those of you who have experience with Gateway of Hemi-sync in general.  What have your experiences been like?  I am not expecting Hemi-sync to do anything grandiose or even specific for me, ie. cause spontaneous OBE, etc.  Of course I am interested in "expanding my consciousness" and in OBE (who in here isn't!!!)  More than anything, however, I am interested to know if there is anything in specific that can aid in the process of the synchronization of the two halfs of the brain and also specific "tips" that could help to move deeper into trance and even ways to step out of the body which are specific to the hemi-sync, etc.

    The pink sound used in the Hemi-Sync process provides a ganzfeld (a word meaning "homogenized field")

activating system attends to the specially designed Hemi-Sync binaural beats, stimulating brainwave states ascendant to focused
states of consciousness. Given appropriate social-psychological conditioning, sufficient mental acuity, and a clear intent,
awareness opens to realms beyond physical reality.

Hemi-Sync . . . stereo earphones or speakers?

When earphones are used, the listener experiences binaural beating. The sensation of auditory binaural beats occurs when two
coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies are presented one to each ear. The brain integrates the two signals, producing a
sensation of a third sound called the binaural beat. Binaural beats originate in the brainstem's superior olivary nucleus, the site of
contralateral integration of auditory input. This auditory sensation is neurologically conveyed to the reticular formation and
simultaneously volume conducted to the cortex where it can be objectively measured as a frequency-following response using
EEG evoked-potential protocols.

When speakers are used the listener experiences very little binaural beating. The primary beat stimulus becomes monaural
beating, the sounds from the two speakers being mixed together in the open air before being perceived by the listener.
Monaural beating also produces a frequency-following response observable at the cortex. Evoked-potential research
conducted at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine on both binaural and monaural beating shows that they are processed
differently in the brain.

Unlike monaural beating with speakers, listening to binaural beats with stereo earphones produces the illusion that the sounds
are located somewhere within the head. When binaural beats are very low frequency, less that 3 Hz, they seem to move back
and forth in the head. If the intensities of the right-ear and left-ear tones are different, an apparent elliptical orbit of the beating
develops.

Both monaural and binaural beats produce a measurable EEG frequency-following response. The amplitude of the
frequency-following response to monaural beats is higher however. How this fact alone impacts on the effectiveness of one
stimuli over the other in altering consciousness remains unknown. Here are some other differences:

    Binaural beats can be perceived only when the right-ear and left-ear tones used to produce them are of low pitch, usually
    less than 1500 Hz.

    Monaural beats produced with two tones of equal intensity sound clean and pure.

    Binaural beats have a muffled sound; only a slight modulation of the relatively loud right-ear and left-ear carrier tones.

    To produce perfect monaural beats the amplitudes of the two tones have to be identical.

    Binaural beats maintain their intensity regardless of the relative amplitudes of the right-ear and left-ear tones even if one
    ear is below threshold. (A hearing loss in one ear may not reduce the effectiveness of binaural beats.)

    Masking monaural beats with noise eliminates the perception of beating and the measurable EEG frequency-following
    response.

    Masking binaural beats with pink sound does not decrease their effectiveness.

    Note: Pink sound is mixed with Hemi-Sync's binaural beats to provide a sensory integration link with out-of-body experiences.
    Research has shown that noise does not obsecure the initial perception of binaural beats and it provides a ganzfeld environment
    conducive to altering states of consciousness.

Given current understanding, here are some guidelines on the use of stereo earphones verses speakers when listening to
Hemi-Sync:

  1.Stereo headphones are probably better when pink sound is used to mask Hemi-Sync's binaural beats (as in many
    Focus-level programs) because binaural beating is not obscured by pink sound (not the case with monaural beating
    experienced with speaker use). Use of earphones promotes the ganzfeld effect of the pink sound and enhances chances
    for experiencing altered states of consciousness and the out-of-body state. Stereo headphones also create an
    encapsulated environment, lessening room and ambient noise which might interfere with the process. Additionally, the use
    of stereo headphones to insure the effectiveness of binaural beating becomes critical when you consider that the term
    "Hemi-Sync" was coined as a trademark because many of the states of consciousness available through this technology
    have been identified as presenting unique hemispherically synchronized brainwave frequencies. Although synchronized
    brainwaves have long been associated with meditative and hypnagogic states, the Hemi-Sync process may be unique in
    its ability to induce and improve such states of consciousness. The reason for this is physiological. Each ear is
    "hardwired" (so to speak) to both hemispheres of the brain. Each hemisphere has its own olivary nucleus
    (sound-processing center) which receives signals from each ear. In keeping with this physiological structure, when a
    binaural beat is present there are actually two electrochemical synaptic waves of equal amplitude and frequency
    present, one in each hemisphere (not the case with monaural beating experienced with speaker use). This is, in and of
    itself, hemispheric synchrony of synaptic activity. The RAS seems to mimic this as it adapts cortical activity to the
    Hemi-Sync environment. When stereo headphones are used the unique binaural beats of the Hemi-Sync process appear
    to contribute to the hemispheric synchronization evidenced in meditative, sleep, and hypnagogic states of consciousness.
  2.Speakers are probably okay when music is used to mask Hemi-Sync's binaural beats as in meditation and
    stress-reduction exercises, enhanced-learning programs, and Metamusic selections. These formats are all designed to
    produce binaural beats when stereo headphones are used but when speakers are used, the listener will perceive
    monaural beats mixed at some level (depending on room acoustics, the position of the speakers, and the relative location
    of the listener) with binaural beats. Unlike pink sound, music will not diminish the monaural beating produced by the
    speakers.
  3.When speakers are used, positioning left and right of the listener rather than in front would emphasize binaural over
    monaural beating because the amplitude of the left or right carrier signal is not relevant in the case of binaural beating.
    Positioning speakers left and right in a classroom would provide binaural beating (and monaural beating) to all listeners
    regardless of their individual location within the room. Monaural beating will be accentuated if stereo speakers are
    positioned in front of listeners because all would hear at relatively equal volume levels from both speakers. Placing the
    stereo speakers close together in front of a group would be fine.
  4.Remember that masking with pink sound does not obscure binaural beating but weakens monaural beating. Also, a
    pink-sound ganzfeld is beneficial to the development of altered-state experiences and the out-of-body state. So it is best
    to use stereo earphones when pink-sound masking is used.

A WOMAN is eight weeks pregnant with the world's first cloned human
baby, it was claimed yesterday.

A controversial Italian doctor made the remarkable announcement at a
genetics conference. Professor Severino Antinori told the meeting in the United Arab Emirates:"Our project is at a very advanced stage. One woman among thousands ofinfertile couples in the program is eight weeks pregnant."

Professor Antinori's office in Rome refused to confirm or deny the reportlast night. The claim prompted scepticism among other experts, who said ProfessorAntinori continually sought publicity by making wild claims never backedup with scientific evidence. But if he has succeeded in implanting a cloned embryo into a woman, it
will prompt worldwide revulsion.

Professor Antinori, condemned for helping a 62-year-old woman to bear a
                   child in 1994, has been shunned by fellow scientists, who see cloning an
                   embryo for reproductive purposes as unacceptable.

                   Experts around the world – including those at the Roslin Institute in
                   Edinburgh, who in 1997 created the world's first cloned mammal, Dolly
                   the sheep – have condemned his project as scientifically flawed. Cloned
                   animals, such as cattle, have had many developmental problems.

                   Professor Antinori counters that "religious fanatics" are orchestrating
                   opposition to his work.

                   Unlike British and American scientists, who are working to produce
                   cloned embryos purely as a source of "spare-part" cells to treat disease,
                   the Italian sees no ethical bar to creating a cloned baby.

                   Professor Antinori, of the International Centre for the Study of Physiopathy
                   of Human Reproduction in Rome, and his colleague Dr Panos Zavos, a
                   Kentucky infertility expert, first announced plans for human cloning last
                   year.

Professor Antinori acknowledged there was evidence suggesting that
even those cloned animals that are born apparently healthy often suffer
from hidden defects.

Dr Ben Mitchell, of the Centre for Bioethics and Human Dignity in Illinois,
said: "If Antinori's claim is true, it is a case of renegade science pursued
at the risk of life."

That is the title of the book I am reading at present.  It is by a man who one day, while meditating in a cabin at the summer camp at which he was a counselor, overheard some children describing the colors "coming off of his body".  He interrupted his meditation to ask them about what they were saying.  The children described his "aura".  

This young man later become a psychologist and school teacher.  His book is dedicated solely to the psychic nature of children.  It's fascinating because he talks about telepathy (espcially the form between mother and child) as well as auras and how children can see entities.  

Today, while substitute teaching some very young children, I asked a few of them (when I had a moment away from the group) if they see colors around people.  Following Peterson's advice, I did so in a very nonchalant manner, and after I had asked some other more banal questions.  Two out of the three children whom I asked (both age 4) told me "Oh yeah...lots of times."  I then asked "What colors do you see?" and they told me "Blue, green and sometimes pink or red."  They went on to tell me they see the colors in adults around the heart area and the head.

Very interesting.  It confirms what I and many others percieve as the "psychic" abilities of children.  We all have/had them, but as we get older...well, you know.

Well, I don't know exactly what he is going to call his organization, but Robert is going to start researching in about a year and is going to find individuals to help him in his endeavors.

Ok- I have to admit that I don't know Mr. Bruce personally and I don't know percisely when he is going to start research, but I was listening to the Art Bell interview and Mr. Bruce specifically mentions that he is going to start doing his own research.  At the time (about a month ago?) he said it would be about a year, so I assume that about ten or eleven months from now he will begin.

He said this after Art asked him about "proof" of the OBE.  Mr. Bruce admitted that although some "scientific" experiments have been done with some success, he wants to do some experiements using a large warehouse type enviornment.  Inside they would construct a huge barrier ("wall") of some kind.  The projector would then have to go and "see" something on the other side of the barrier...

Anyway, it seems that Mr. Bruce would like to organize a variety of experiments.  He even mentioned his desire to "map out" the astral realms with the help of other projectors.  Any takers?  (smile)

I wonder what the requirments should and will be for those individuals chosen to be part of Mr. Bruce's experiments?  What do you think they should be?  What specific expierments would you like to see done?  

I believe they should do some of the "run of the mill" experiments, at least intitially, such as going and seeing random numbers, describing what they see in other rooms (ie. people, how many, etc.)  I am interested to hear more about what Mr. Bruce and his associated plan to do.

We'll see...and when the results are published I think it will be a break through because Mr. Bruce has taken a completely different approach on the subject than any of the other OBE "pioneers" of the past, what with his straightforward language and "practicality" (did I spell that right?

I have always been under the impression that the pentegram had to do with "devil worship" and other dark practices, but my research indicates something entirely different.

Could some enlighten me?  I want to know the basics about it and when/how it got it's negative connotations.

I know I am full of questions, but bear with me as I am in a big download phase if you know what I mean...

I recently came accross some information regarding something called "Outsourcing".  The individual proponing this idea used the term to describe accessing and interacting with the higher astral/mental planes in order to acquire new knowledge and gain positive experiences (contact with higher self).  Nothing new hear for most of us, even those you aren't seasoned travellers understand that in the higher levels one can attain a great deal of positive experiences.

The interesting thing I came accross was that some of these higher planes seem to have specific and meaningful colors associated with them.  In brief: Violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.  

Violet- spiritual enlightenment/"actualization (I know that is broad, but this is a VERY basic explanation)

Blue- balance/"attuning"

Green- healing

Yellow- learning/knowledge

Orange- motivate/nurture

Red- I can't remember


Can anyone add anything to this?  Has anyone had any personal experiences regarding color association?

The reason I entitled this post "forget OBE movie" is because I believe that stories like this one, especially geared for children and young adults (which can be read and enjoyed by adults as well!) Is much more likely to get people to be interested in the natural spritual and intellectual "evolution" (as RB puts it) than a film would.

At first, I thought I could write the shortest review I've ever written -- five words -- "Hey, what's up with this?" I decided on a fuller treatment.

Bartholomew Elderberry is transplanted, with his family, from California to rural Utah. As a teen about to experience the best years of his life, Bart is not altogether pleased with the idea, but he has no choice.

He quickly becomes friends with his several of his new classmates. One evening the group decides to go for a "joyride" along a steep mountain pass. An impatient truck driver behind them tries to run them off the road. The brakes on Bart's vehicle give out, and they plummet over a cliff. Bart suddenly finds himself floating up and away from the accident, a real "near death experience."

He soon discovers that he can have such out-of-body experiences at will. Separate from his body, he can travel wherever he pleases, undiscovered by the human eye. He reluctantly shares this knowledge with his best friend Paul, who shockingly suggests that such a talent could come in handy vis a vis a girls' locker room. (Don't worry -- Bart is too good a Mormon to even think of spying on the girls.)

It isn't long before he overhears a plot to kidnap a young girl. This discovery, along with others, leads the young people on an adventure that would place them in harm's way, and test Bart's mystical abilities to the max.


Evaluation
I don't quite know what to make of this book. The "About the Author" page at the end of the book claims that Mr. Rowley "enjoy(s) adventure stories and others about exciting and interesting things that could happen to normal LDS people." Yup, out of body experiences, hair-raising adventures with kidnappers, blackmailers and murderers sounds exactly like a day in the life of a normal LDS person.

One is tempted to dismiss My Body Fell Off! with a shrug, but I think there are some issues that need to be addressed:

Without revealing the ending, suffice it to say that the author sees some romance, some beauty, in death. It is made quite explicit in the beginning of the book, when Bart has his first out-of-body experience. As he rose into the air, he looked down on his body:


    Time has stopped, I reasoned. My mind is rushing at such high speed, it looks like time has slowed down. That must be it. Any second now the fall will be over, and I'll be. . . .
    Dead? So, this is it, I thought matter-of-factly. I'm dead. It didn't even hurt.
    The ground started to settle away from me, and I realized that I was floating upwards. I felt as light as a fluff of feather. There was no sensation of rising, falling, or moving at all. I felt . . . free, as though heavy chains had been removed.
    Strangely, I felt ALIVE! More alive than I had ever felt before.
. . .
    That's Bartholomew Elderberry, I observed, without any emotion whatever. I knew Bartholomew Elderberry was me, but the body I was looking at no longer held any interest for me.
    I'm done with that body now. I don't need it anymore.
This on pages 35 and 36, very early in the story. I was a bit troubled by this ecstatic view of death, particularly given that the intended audience of this book is LDS youth! Surely the problems of teen suicide are sufficiently well-known to give any author pause in producing such a depiction.

I had to read nearly to the end of the book before there was any specifically life-affirming dialogue. Weak as it was, I appreciated the passing nod to the pleasures of living.

But there's a deeper issue here -- I found myself wondering whether the obviously-gnostic depiction of flesh-as-wrapper to be shed in order to achieve happiness. Common notions of purity and chastity are transformed into a dread of the flesh, and this I find antithetical to the best in Mormon humanism (by which I mean Mormonism's appreciation for life in the here and now).

Mormon youth-oriented literature is often criticized for being too preachy, too moralistic. Searching for some underlying message in Rowley's book, I could not figure what his goal was in bringing this message to us. Is life really all that bad? Should we be glorifying death in a book intended for the LDS youth market? I think not.

Later developments in this book introduce an Indian who can similarly leave his body, and elements of occultism and spiritism make their way into the book. Care should be taken that such objectionable views be presented as such.

I can only guess that Mr. Rowley did not intend his book to take this direction. Instead, he has tried to produce a unique piece of Mormon literature, the first I'm aware of to address the issue of near-death experiences.

While Betty Eadie has expressed such views in her books on her own experiences, no one thinks she reflects mainstream LDS teaching. Neither does Mr. Rowley, in my opinion.

Young readers may enjoy the story. Adults will find large holes in the plot -- impenetrably manipulative plot twists, rescued only by manipulating the spirits and dumbing-down the actors. I wonder whether Mr. Rowley will follow up with a second volume. If he does, I sincerely hope he considers the subliminal effects of this, his first novel.

It's a flashy, attractive cover. It's a catchy title. I examined the book carefully, front and back cover, and saw nothing to indicate genre except for the designation "Adventure Series." But I saw it shelved in the Young Adult section of Deseret Book. And the protagonist is a teenaged boy. I decided I would think of it as a Young Adult novel. I had to think of it that way, otherwise I would have to give it a negative review.

Bart Elderberry is a new tenth grader who would have been excited to start high school if his family had stayed in California. Instead he starts high school in some unspecified town in Utah Valley. The first four chapters spend time letting him get used to his environment, meeting the girl that will become his love interest, having a run-in with the cowboy bullies, and generally making friends he can interact with for the rest of the book. In chapter five the action finally gets started.

There's a church dance, and a bunch of them hop in the car to go for a drive in the canyon. On the way down, thanks to the careless driving of a passing vehicle, they go tumbling over the edge of the road. That's when Bart discovers his body can fall off.

He thinks he's dead. And he's having a great time flying around here and there. But when he suddenly is sucked back into his body, he's obliged to reassess his conclusion. As the phenomenon keeps occurring, he finally figures out he's astral projecting, and learns to control it.

He also comes across a kidnapping plot, tied to an even more elaborate plot cooked up by some local scoundrel. Bart and his friends get involved, and have an easy time working things out with Bart's ability -- until Bart discovers that the scoundrel has employed someone else with the ability to astral project, and that someone else knows how to control it a whole lot better than Bart.

The writing style is clearly Young Adult. I couldn't have enjoyed it without thinking of it as any other genre. Once you get past the lengthy four-chapter introduction (which really should be shortened up), the action zings relentlessly. The book is very readable. But don't expect any sophistication or profundity. For me as an adult, I wouldn't have liked the book except to tell myself I was about to read a Young Adult novel, and deal with it at that level.

But for my fourteen-year-old daughter, it was fantastic. She loved it. She devoured it. She instantly demanded books two and three, which I own but have not yet read, and devoured them, then regaled me with her misery that more books didn't exist. This series is definitely Young Adult, and works quite well at that level.

Okay, so they're Young Adult. What's the big deal? Why do I keep harping on that?

Because in the Author's Note at the end of the book, I get the impression that Rowley didn't necessarily intend that they be Young Adult. And I also get the impression that they have succeeded with other adult readers. One man's poison, I guess. Rowley believes in the reality of astral projection -- convinced after much research -- and claims that others have approached him who have the ability and found his books helpful in dealing with the phenomenon. He believes astral projection is one of the gifts of the Spirit -- a talent given by God -- to certain people.

This is the gist of the Author's Note, and it's obvious why he would feel a need for an Author's Note to explain his attitude about astral projection, since many members of the church would consider it approaching apostasy, if not blasphemy, to call something traditionally associated with new age spookology a gift of the Spirit. Yet there's nothing in our theology that requires dismissal of the idea. All you need for astral projection is a spirit that can separate from the body, and LDS theology can certainly accommodate that.

Personally, I'm not convinced. But neither am I dissuaded. I would simply need to do my own research to convince myself Rowley's theory is true -- a claim like that requires some serious evidence before acceptance. But I hope it is. I think it would be fun to have astral projection be a reality.

In the meantime, your kids can read the series and enjoy it, and everyone can call it harmless fantasy if genuine astral projection is too creepy a concept for you. And you may even find that you can enjoy reading it too, as long as you don't expect Moby willy or something. It's certainly a step above Goosebumps.

The following is a question which I must post a response to on in the next few days.  Those of you familiar with Descartes will understand the evil genius part of the question, but what I really want to know is how you all decide "what is real and what is not?"  I thought it would be interesting to get opinions from you, my friends, here on the "Astral Pulse" website.  (ps-the class is phil 101)
