Yes, but I haven't done this myself.

You don't always feel the presence. It's only a hallucination anyway, and can take on different forms each time. It's not a separate entity. I've never experienced the smothering effect, but I have felt weight on my chest. If I see anything during sleep paralysis, it's usually the inside of my room with some dark negative energy cloud near my feet. Trying to move towards it induces an out of body experience, and that requires you to confront it.

9. I've been reading Robert Peterson's books and I have read that he got psychic abilities and an inner voice that talks to him after he started having OBEs. Is it common to gain new abilities after you start having OBEs? Are these abilities good?
I've had nothing as major as Robert Peterson, but I have noticed a few small things (developed intuition, can see auras, precognitive dreams, etc.).

Quote10. In Robert Peterson's books he also talks about how it seems like falls out of his body when he trips on something but then he is pulled back into his body quickly. Does your body and your conscious become less connected after you have an OBE?
I've not had that experience.

Hi Pyro21,

It's definitely worth getting your hands on some books. Robert Peterson's books are available for reading online for free (http://www.robertpeterson.org/) and they're pretty good. You should also try to obtain Monroe's Journeys Out of Body. It's available in most bookstores and it's not expensive. I'm sure you know other ways to obtain ebooks too, but I'm not advocating that ;)

Is there something specific in your past you're trying to change?

It won't happen over night. Calm the f down and be patient. For some people it takes weeks, others years. Also, it might help if you posted in the astral projection boards instead of metaphysics.

Robert Monroe once tried to visit the president at the time (in Journeys Out of the Body, I think) and was stopped by some kind of psychic bodyguard. It could be possible that that man you saw was performing the same job. You should be very careful though; these dudes clearly don't want anyone peeking in and taking a look, and you don't want to make them into enemies. Even if they are unable to hurt you in your etheric / astral forms (which I think they probably could do actually), they could still hurt you physically by going round to your house, kidnapping you and sending you to Guantanamo Bay and waterboarding you, you terrorist!

Bellend_1010, what are you searching for here? Maybe we can help you find it if you tell us what it is. You're asking some pretty odd questions.

Hi oneironaught.

Quoteand even then i only get a few feet before i phase back into the physical
If you want to stop that happening with a minimum of effort, I'd suggest getting a long way from your body as quickly as you can as soon as you're out. There's a sort of magnetic pull with a range of about ten feet that pulls you back. A lot of people have documented this.

Quotei hardly had enough energy to even try to build momentum.
Have you tried any energy raising techniques? Those might help with that.

Quotealso, i can never see when i leave
This problem affects a lot of people. I usually get tunnel vision. I think it happens because you've yet to get used to "vision" out of body. It is quite different because you're not sensing light with eyes like you do in the body. But even if you can't see, you should probably be able to "sense" where things are with your mind.

Quotea strange smokey ubstance in the air.
That's another weird thing that seems almost universal to out of body experiences. I've never seen an explanation of it though. Maybe it's just clumps of undefined astral matter, or energy or something like that.

Since I've started meditating (almost) every night in an attempt to get back into astral projection, I've started remembering pieces of what "I" have been doing while asleep. It's not dreams; it's like directly remembering the underlying "meaning" behind the dreams rather than looking for the meaning through symbols. One constant factor during these memories is that I'm always fully aware of my own nonphysical existences and the nature of nonphysical reality, as though all those blocked memories are released and reunited with me for a short duration. Does anybody else remember being in this state?

Some examples:

  • One time while meditating, I fell asleep for about five minutes. When I woke up again, I had this memory of being surrounded by white light and being unaware of my human existence; I was just one conscious entity of many, in a void of light.
  • One thing I've worried about a fair bit recently is my inability to feel love for people I know I care about (friends, family). I had an experience while asleep that was mixed with some dream symbolism, but essentially I was on a course with my aunty and a man she knew, and the course was designed to help you feel love. I remember having a three-way hug with these people and feeling fairly intense emotions and energy flowing through me but struggling to give it back.
  • I had a dreamless night last week, and after waking I had a memory of being in a school or something, being taught something important and given advice.
  • I remember a brief conversation I had with my "higher self," where my unconscious self was worried about my conscious self being tempted towards alcohol and drugs. Neither of them knew I would remember it (I think). There was a conclusion reached and another person was brought in to help me. I don't remember anything that was said though.
  • Last night, in the middle of my sleep period, I became semi-conscious of where and what my unconscious self was doing. I was outside the Universe, helping some being(s), I think. The weirdest thing was I was filled with this unimaginably intense energy, and it was quite scary. Some knowledge passed between my unconscious and conscious selves, and I knew that returning to the physical in this state would literally cause some kind of explosion (spontaneous human combustion?). We had a hard time bringing me down, and eventually I returned to normal sleep.

There are many of these I can list. Some of them were recorded in my dream journal years ago, but I've never remembered as many as I have in the last two weeks.

I know that it was a dream because there was another blanket on my bed and it was very heavy.
I wouldn't dismiss that so quickly. It could have been a hypnagogic hallucination or due to the "heavy" feelings of sleep paralysis.

It always says "just be patient"  to what ever I ask it.  It is a kind voice.  Multiple levels of dimension or various vibrational frequency?  Higher self, spirit guide?  What do you think?
I was talking to a voice that was a lot like that for a while thinking it was my Higher Self, and it would claim to be my HS too. Responses to questions were always nonverbal and instant and often "be patient" or "it's coming". I tried to do a validation of this by asking it what 37 * 5 was, and the instant response was 142 (instead of 185), so I'm guessing it was some kind of subconscious process in my mind I was listening to, but it might not be the same for you. Since then I think I've achieved real contact with my higher self while unconscious but not dreaming. We had a conversation, but I can't remember anything of it other than its purpose and conclusion.

I'm wondering what happens if you interact with a former or future self. We seem to have one account saying alternate pasts and futures can be created, and one saying the past and future are tied together
Well I'm still a firm believer in causality. I don't think you can change anything your state of mind is causally linked to. But I don't think there's anything that prevents the existence of parallel universes or "what if" worlds created purely for the purpose of education.
#40
That sounds cool. I can think of a few uses for that. How did you do it? Did you just project with the "what if" question in the forefront of your mind?
#41
You have to look at Monroe's experience in its context: he'd left the nonphysical universe and was exploring the next level outward. You can't remain human while doing this - he was disconnected from the universe and therefore his body for a long time and it started to die. There's no danger of this during astral projection because you'll never know how to go that far unless you're ready.

Yes, they don't make sense though. One conversation I had with my best friend's girlfriend while in that state:

Her: Don't eat that.
Me: Eat what?
Her: Nothing.
Me: Don't eat nothing?
She laughs

So finally we have more information on meeting past and future selves - even if it raises more questions. You seemed to be different people in both instances, so perhaps it wasn't a total paradox
I don't think I was different people. I tend to be fairly androgynous while OOB or astral travelling. In almost half the dreams and out of body experiences I have, I'm female without intending it. I didn't explain because I guess it seemed embarrassing and it feels quite personal. I don't understand why it happens.

That encounter with the man in the woods that you wrote about was interesting. Any idea of the year? The books he had sound a lot like the "akashic records".

Alternate past, alternate future, but it was astral.  Sorry.
I don't understand what you're trying to say.

Anyone else got anything? Anyone seen anything happen in the past or future from Etheral?
I have a feeling there's something else I'm forgetting.

I think it's a shame not much is happening with API at the moment. I will be willing to try visiting there once I figure out how to induce an out of body experience again (I used to do it many times a week; I didn't realise it would be so easy to forget). Also I think it's easier to go to a person you have some emotional attachment to rather than some location you've never been to. Any ideas about how to exploit that? Could we make up a character to inhabit the API permanently, like a cartoon character?

How did you know it was your past self?
I just had a sense of knowing that it was me.

Quotethis sounds like it could have only have happened in the Astral.
Why is that?

QuoteI am referring to time travel where you may have seen the past or future in the realtime physical world (etheral). Do you have anything like that happen to you?
Initially I thought the experience was an astral experience, however more recently I've come to believe it was etheric, though where (when?) in the world this occurred I'm not too sure.

I have had another altered-time etheric experience if that last one doesn't please you. Strictly speaking, it might not be considered time travel, but one time I got out of body, flew out my window and spotted a small half-metre cloud just outside my window. It was paused in the air, and then I noticed that everything else wasn't moving either. I was moving free of time, I guess. I think the cloud may have been another entity or just a random ball of energy.

Robert Monroe wrote about some time travel experiences in his second and third books, if you're interested.

I once travelled back in time by about five minutes. When I got OOB, I flew around a bit, and stopped in a stone tower. After a couple of seconds this blue person flew in and stood beside me, and I got the impression it was female. I phased back to the physical and then attempted again, and this time I was drawn to the tower again, but I realised my past self was there too, and he flew off. I still don't understand why I was female the second time.

detaching is becoming easier and easier, but im blind when i do. i can only "sense" my envoronment", any tips on how to see in the astral world?
One thing I used to do was to cover my eyes with my hands when I'm blind and then take them off again. Or sometimes I'd walk through a wall slowly and my vision would come back.

Quote from: T.L. on April 08, 2009, 22:12:43One of my other ideas I have yet to try is to go to the whitehouse and snoop around and see what kind of verifiable information I can glean from conversations/notes/reports laying about.

I think Monroe once tried to visit the President at the time and was stopped by a psychic bodyguard. Maybe you should be careful?

As for me, I want to do some validations (there's a playing card lying face up on the top of my bookshelf at the moment for this purpose), then I'd like to try visiting Monroe if that's possible, and then I'd like to try visiting someone I know over the Internet, and then I want to do some research on psychic self-defense, as I'm mostly unsatisfied with the information that's publicly available in the physical world. Maybe astral intelligences understand the subject better.

I've been an astral projector for nearly seven years and I tried salvia for the first time last month. The experiences are nothing alike. I know exactly what you mean about viewing reality from another, 'foreign' perspective (I think I'd probably call this an out of reality experience). I experienced a total loss of long-term memory, so for me, it was like seeing reality for the first time, yet still being aware there were other realities I'd been stuck in for eternities, though not able to fully remember them. It literally blew my mind when I realised I was made of meat and my whole self was the sum total of the actions of little neurons buzzing in my brain...

Anyway, I guess to someone who's experienced with salvia, an out of body experience will seem less dramatic. You're still anchored to the same reality, still looking at it from roughly the same angle, but maybe with a position outside your physical body. To me, OBEs seem less introspective and more about exploring "out there".

Hope that helps.

There's another fairly mundane possibility we haven't considered hear yet. I've always found my sense of hearing is greatly amplified in a sleep paralysis state (for example, I can hear my neighbour over the road showering, etc.). It might be that someone nearby was listening to the radio or watching TV and you heard it.
