Rileyboy,

I had this problem early on.  I went and purchased a sleep mask because of a porch light coming through my window.  I noticed when wearing the mask, if my eyes opened slightly to total darkness, it didn't bother me. I got to the point that I didn't notice if my eyes were open a little but.  My eyes dry out if I leave them in a slightly open position and then I have to focus on them to blink.  You might give it a try.

As far as I can tell the only solution is to just exeperience hypnagogics often enough that it's no longer exciting and then you can ease through that stage without waking

Oh yeah, I have experienced sounds like this way before I ever had my first OBE.  Usually it is a loud bang, music playing or people talking.  I think what startled me on this one is how close it felt.

Whoa! Here I am asleep and some man is whispering in my ear.[:O]

Sometimes when I'm getting close to exit, I feel like someone is standing over me and observing me. I mean right over me.  It takes a lot to keep my focus but I usually do. This is a pretty powerful experience when it happens.

That's what is so interisting with this.  You never know what you are going to experience along the way.  The journey is almost as fun as the destination.

Thanks AntiGravity,

Keep trying new things and don't give up.  I am a pretty clumsy astral traveler right now.[B)] It is pretty hit and miss with me.

I believe that having OBEs becomes easier when a person actually finds the combination that works for them personally.  For some, it's fear and for others, it's relaxation that keeps them from success.  The reasons can be endless.  Just follow the signs.

I have about figured out that I need to work on relaxation more.  I rarely get to the vibration stage without exiting.  If I could reach that stage as easy as some people on this board, I would never be home.[:D]

Finally, relax.  You have a [:)]LOT[:)] of time ahead of you to practice and I'm convinced that you will find your magic combination if you keep trying.

Good luck,

D.C.

Hi all,

I tried this method this morning.  During my 2nd 25 minute period I heard a loud whisper in my ear that startled me awake.  I couldn't go back to sleep after that.  It seemed so real.  I'm always fascinated by the images, sounds and feelings of fear that can be experienced when you are dancing around the edge of OBEing.

I may try again in the morning.

rhart15,

Just keep trying new things.  I don't think the concept of OBE/AP is complicated.  What makes it hard to accomplish is finding something that works for you.  I personally only get vibrations if I am about to exit.  I read a lot about people who are able to reach the vibration stage but can't exit.  I am different.  If I make it to the vibration stage, I'm gone![:)]

I finally got out again last night after being in a slump that lasted 4 months to the day.  This was after I was able to have 9 OBEs in 3 months.  I was frustrated to say the least.

Don't get discouraged.  Just read everything you can, try something for a couple of weeks. If it don't work, try something else.  Remember, you have plenty of time.  When it happens, it will be well worth it.

Good Luck,

D.C.

Hey Cube,

I'll give it the method a test run for a few days and let you know what I come up with.  Sounds promising![:)]

Great read for newbies.  The strange experiences associated with OBE can be unnerving to say the least.  It does well in covering most of these experiences so thay aren't so surprising when you encounter them along the way.

Hi cairnsb,

I go through this in cycles as well.  I go through periods where I can't remember any dreams and then out of no where I start remembering 5 per night.

After doing a lot of reading on the subject, I decided to download the Brain Wave Generator. I started listening to the deepmind VI preset for 1 hour each night before going to bed.  I immediately started having very strong, solid dream recall.  I also feel energy going through me every time I listen to it.  It did make me tired in the morning the first 2 or 3 days I listened to it though.  It doesn't seem to do that now.

Last night after listening to the preset before going to bed for the 6th night, I almost had a concious exit.  I reached heavy vibrations for several seconds and was about to exit when a car with one of those monster stereo systems went BOOM! BOOM! down my street and brought me back[xx(].  This is important because I rarely feel vibrations.  When I do, I am on the way to exit.

This is as close as I have been to an OBE in over 3 months.  Man, I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to have another one.

In summary, the preset has helped me a lot, but thats just the effect it has on me.  I can't guarantee what it will do for you or anyone else.  It's helped me get into a state of deeper relaxation, caused energy movement, produced heavier dream recall and I almost got out last night.  I don't know how long it will work but so far, I'm pleasantly surprised.

P.S.  I don't want to sound like a walking advertisement for BWGEN.  I just posted my experience with it.  I suggest that everyone read and research external devices such as these before using them.

Michael and Manuel,

I appreciate your replies.

Michael,

I actually do keep a dream journal.  It gets spotty sometimes when I don't recall any dreams for a couple of days.  It is very entertaining to go back and read.  I'll just keep working at it.  I'm hooked now.

Hi Serenity,

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you are fearful of returning to your body and some of the things you may encounter while projecting, you might want to wait.  May I suggest reading a few books if you have not already done so? They have a calming effect when you read about the authors projecting hundreds of times and returning safely. Once you have truly realized that nothing serious can happen to you, then go ahead and attempt it.

IMHO,

cairnsb,

Reemy pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as how important a journal is (Great post Reemy).  I have to say that I let my journal slip every now and then and leave gaps here and there.  However, one thing is very clear. When I start entering my experiences in my journal again, I get to the point after a few days that I am writing for over an hour and logging up to 5 dreams. When I stop for several days, I actually have nights where I don't remember a single dream.

To those interested,

Once again this morning I awoke and used the brushing technique to see if I could remember anything.  Nothing was coming to mind in the way of dreams so I thought I would just see what popped up.  After a minute or two I remembered a short snippet of having trouble trying to open my eyes.  It was the same feeling I get when I'm trying to get out of my body.  I never just float out.  I normally get heavy vibrations. At that point I try to wrestle free of my body and then I feel like I'm "shot out of a cannon" as someone here has described it previously.

Once again this leads me in the direction of missing the exit or download.  The things that seem to be missing for me right now are the vibrations, the feeling that someone was in the room with me right before exit and the fear during exit.  It's almost like the exit is so subtle that I don't notice.[8)]

Oh well, I know I'm getting closer and I'll be back on track soon. [:)]

BOATS,

Here is what happened to me this morning using the "NEW" brushing technique for memory recall:

I awoke and knew something had happened but I couldn't remember exactly what.  I started "brushing" my toes.  In about 2 minutes a memory popped in my head.  I was on a waterslide in a water park.  One of those long ones that you go very fast and drop almost straight down. When I pushed off and started down the slide, I started going very fast and recognized what was happening.  This was exactly the same feeling I get when I experience the "passing through a tunnel" feeling during exit. I wasn't able to bring back the complete experience but I am positive that I was experiencing the exit.

This method works for me in getting a foothold on the experience.  I keep "feeling" for the rest of the experience by trying to remember it throughout the day.  Often, I can recall most of the experience.

Hope this helps,

D.C.

CptPicard,
I totally agree with Eric g.

quote:
Just let the experience happen to you, be a spectator so to speak.

You need to be a passive observer in what is happening to YOU.  You are definately a step closer.  I think it gets easier after you can get to the vibration stage.  Someone here says that all you need to do is breathe deeply after you reach the heavy vibrations and you will project.  That is exactly how I have been doing it.

Good Luck,

NAY,

quote:
Hey Kosmo, being a artist I have great visual skills and can relate

I have dabbled in oil painting and I have realized just how helpful this has been in the past.  When someone has experience truly observing something or "studying" it, they notice much more detail.  I have asked many people to look at a tree and tell me what color they see.  So many tell me that they see green.  They don't even notice the many shading colors or the shapes of the leaves.  The same thing happens a lot of time when I tell someone to close their eyes for a little bit and tell me what they see.  They often say that they don't see anything.  I then point out that in the black void behind their eyelids, there are many different shapes and dots if you look close enough and long enough.

Once someone learns to "look at a tree" in detail it becomes second nature.  You never quite look at anything the same way again.  I believe that this detail is very important in visualization techniques.  People that have never painted a tree may not notice the palet of colors required to create that tree.

Anyone who wishes to improve the detail of their visualization just needs to go sit in their back yard and closely observe a tree, old picket fence, old barn or even clouds for all of the detail and color nature uses to create these things.

It's also fun.

Birm,

This was exactly what i am talking about... By doing that you move your conciousness into your astral counterpart and while you are close to the physical, both of your bodies share the same thought at that moment. If you think through your dream memories at that point, your physical body records them as memories.

Wow, I never really thought of it as being that.  I discovered it by accident after I woke up and decided to do some energy work.  I am going to treat it as you stated above and see if I can improve my shadow memory.

Birm,

Thank you for posting your experiences on sex in the astral.  I am interested in this topic from the "mechanical" standpoint and your information has been very helpful.  I have read many posts on this and they seem to be influenced by ethical/moral impressions and I totally understand that.  However, I have yet to experience this phenomena and when I do, I would like to have some understanding so I can determine on my own which direction to take.

In summary, I see it like this: There have been many helpful hints on this board related to topics such as flying during OBE, getting stuck in the physical body, how to deal with negs and many other topics.  This is just another helpful hint on how to navigate through the experience when it occurs and I applaud you once again for posting.

Maybe someone can start a topic about the ethics/morality and leave this topic to the mechanics of it.  What do you think?[:)]

Hi All,

I have experienced the mind split effect as a vague recall of vibrations a couple of times lately.  It seems to me that I am not bringing back my projection memories properly resulting in a vague memory of the exit.

I am curently working through a slump. I believe that I am still having OBEs but I am missing the exit or the download of the experience.  This may be due to the exit not being as strong to me as it used to be.  Who knows[8)]

One thing about recalling dreams.  I have found that I can recall dreams if I relax and start "brushing" my toes and feet according to Robert Bruce's NEW technique as soon as I wake up.  After a couple of minutes of brushing, a memory scene just pops into my mind.  If you use the NEW energy technique, give it a try for a couple of mornings for a few minutes and see how it works.

Put me down for a big YES![;)]

I have had 9 since September 03.  The first one was after reading the on-line book by Robert Peterson.  It was Afterwords that I found out what a traditional OBE was.  Mine are pretty run-o-the mill OBEs. Nothing really that I haven't read about somewhere else(mostly after having the experience).

I'm currently in a slump going on 3 months[:(].  I'm kind of confused about that.  I would like to know if anybody else out there that has frequent OBEs goes through slumps?  Or are they consistent?

In an OBE, I was grabbed from behind.  I percieved it to be a woman. Her arms wrapped around me at about mid chest. It felt like we were playfully dancing.  Like a couple of people horsing around at a party. We were kind of gyrating in a playful way.[:I].  I didn't get anything negative from it. She didn't actually let go. I just returned and the OBE ended.

Hmmm! Now I wonder![8)]

thelou and MajorTom,

I had good success with the "MajorTom" method. I didn't actually OBE but I learned a lot about the process.  I kept getting interrupted by outside interferrence and did not get to complete the task.  Here's some of what I learned:

1. The 2nd night I learned I can go to sleep with my arm held up in the air [:O]. I was getting very uncomfortable after 2 hours of lying on my back so I turned on to one side.  I left my arm up in the air. Next, I woke up 2 hours later with my arm perfectly balanced and my fingers were asleep.[:(!]

2. I also learned that about 2-3 seconds after my hypnogogic (sp) imagery turns into a scene and starts to move my arm starts to fall.  This appears to be where my mind starts falling asleep. I got pretty good at recognizing this and started to predict it. A little more practice and this will be helpful in keeping my mind from falling asleep without the annoyance of the arm in the air.

3. I got to the feeling of falling through my bed. At this point, I knew I was very close to exit but I got interrupted. [:(!] I think I could have actually been writing about my successful OBE if it weren't for being interrupted.

4. I also reaffirmed to some degree that I have a unique, well disguised OBE killer.  When I get to a point during my exercizes that exit is near, I start telling myself that I'm tired of trying and to give up and try again tomorrow night.  It usually happens at the same point in my practice and is not related how long I have been trying.  Pretty sneeky huh![}:)]

In summary,

What the "MajorTom" method did was help me become more familiar with different stages and what goes on by just spending a lot of time practicing. I am trying to map a way through to "surefire" OBEs and this weekend has helped a bunch.

Thanks again MajorTom and thelou for your support.

D.C.

Oh Yeah! MajorTom,

Please come back and visit us sometime.

cesm23,

The way upstream described sleeping on the side is how I do it.  I do it without the pillow. I just refer to it as on my side because when you pull your leg up, it lifts off of your stomach a little.  Maybe somewhere in between stomach and side.

Thanks for the great description, upstream.

cesm23,

You can have an OBE from different sleeping positions.  I have had them from on my back and from lying on each side. Sometimes when I wake up at night, I notice sensations that I attribute to OBEs.  I roll over on my side and the event begins.  The ones I have from on my back happen when I'm practicing techniques.  The ones I have from on my side are usually random.

I think the key is to find a position that is comfortable enough to let you work into the mind awake/body asleep phase.

Sctt859,

Do you mind if I ask if you actually have OBEs?  There seems to be an issue with this because you have posted the information in quotes very recently.  Just wondering?[:)]
