Dear Dark Knight, Crim and everyone actually,
Everyone dreams each night (if you sleep) and so when you, Dark Knight, write you had no dreams in years, it only means that you do not remember your dreams, but you DO dream everynight, and more than once each night, at least once every sleep cycle. A sleep cycle lasts for more than an hour (say about 100 min), so that within a night you can dream 5 times, and each time can be pretty long with many stories, etc...
There is not such a thing as "I haven't had a dream" for years, or even for last night... As the night pass you have more chance to remember your dreams. If you wake up early in the morning and sleep much less than 8 hours, then the chance are that you will not remember any dream. After you have slept 6-7 hour in a night, if you continue to sleep (say and reach 8h at least of sleep) then you will start remembering the dream you had in your last sleep (just before waking up). If you do not remember your dream, it does not mean you are not dreaming, but only that maybe you do not sleep enough or that the "barrier" between your conscious and unconscious part of your mind is very strong.
There are some very good books about that by very good psychologists, the one you will like is the one from Young ( a disciple of Freud) who is even depicting some of the things we are writing here (collective unconscious, etc..).
I wish you sweet dreams and :
If you want to remember your dreams you need to sleep 8 hours and not to wake up with an alarm clock. You need to wake up all by yourself and make the effort not to get up and stay still in bed and try to remember. Also before going to sleep repeat to yourself you want to remember your dreams. Get a notebook and write in it the date every time you go to sleep and write in it that you want to remember your dreams (autosuggestion). And if you have any memory of a dream write it down. It takes about 2 weeks for autosuggestion to start working.
