Well, basically you have to lie or sit in a position that is most comfortable to you and relax your body as much as possible, in order to be able not to think of any part of it, or your daily problems, any more. You can listen to meditative music, light up some candles for the atmosphere.. Some like chanting mantras, or repeating them in thoughts - my favourite is saying "Ommm" over and over again.
And, you have to think about relaxing as little as possible - just let it happen. In the meantime, you must keep your mind alert.
It is possible to AP from trance state, but, as far as I know, it is more difficult than to project from dreams. However, not impossible!
