My personal perspective is that two types of meditation are useful for lucid dreaming/OBE.  Single-point meditation is what you need to develop to pierce the veil between physical awareness and NPR; it teaches you to silence all the noise from the physical awareness state, to reduce the signal-to-noise ratio as RVers like to call it.  Mindfulness meditation teaches you what is useful once you have achieved the NPR mental state; it will open your awareness to your surroundings in a mindful way to keep you focused and connected to the NPR condition and allow for longer LDs/OBEs.

If reality is virtual, I would see our 3D selves as the avatars and our Higher Selves as the players tapping on the keyboard.  And free will would actually be far more likely than having a lack there of.  It would add the needed complexity and require purposeful, independent action of the avatars.  Our supposed free will would simply be a programmed stimulus/response algorithm, the means of leveling our characters, with spiritual attainment as the primary characteristic to be developed.  It would even explain my disbelief in karma, as I feel that all decisions and growth/decline are purely based on action/reaction, and consequences of same, not on some cosmic God meting out punishments and rewards for wrong or right actions.  Just a thought.

Kzaal, I appreciate you sharing your opinion.  Personally, I believe that the universe is a perfectly aligned cause-and-effect machine.  God, the universe, the One, the All needs nothing more to affect ascension of souls.  It's humans who complicate a relatively simple process; that process, though, requires a very simple thing that most humans don't like in the least: personal responsibility of actions, personal responsibility for the effects they themselves cause.  Vicious that.  But quite straight forward, i think.  You just have let go of the avenging Intelligence, et al., coming to get you.

Thanks for the response, Xanth.  Most of the time, given the seeming ubiquitous nature of the New Age movement, I feel quite alone in my opinion.

Everything in our daily existence is perceived through the interpretation of vibrations gathered with our physical apparatus: eyes, ears, etc..  They receive information within a certain constrained frequency band.  Our brains process the data.  Our minds come to conclusions based on that processed data.  In the non-physical reality, our sense of place is defined by how our minds interpret the incoming data as well.  We could very easily be experiencing the RTZ directly/accurately, but the interpretation while in the NPR gives a slightly different output.  So we see things a smidgen out of place, or sometimes more so.  It's all information processing when it comes down to it.  Who says NPR processing has to spit out the exact same result if processed with non-physical senses (whatever they actually are).  In NPR, we could be processing more/less data and coming to conclusions slightly out of sync with RTZ conclusions.  Only trial-and-error testing, RTZ vs. NPR, will give more insight.  As stated in many places, few people have a complete duplication of RTZ data in NPR space.   Maybe practice will make perfect.  Ciao.

I used to buy into the karma thing, but I eventually came to a conclusion.  Karma is just the Eastern version of Sin.  Both only have one purpose: to create fear of wrong action.  Sin gives you a wrathful God delivering vengeance upon you.  Karma tosses out God's vengeance and replaces it with the universe getting back at you in future incarnations.  Both are geared toward creating sheep who follow the rules for fear of a future spanking.  And there seems to be millions of people, within Christianity and Buddhism alone, who need to look over their shoulder in fear of that stick to keep on a proper path.  Very sad.
