FYI, this pole shift/geomagnetic reversal confusion was started not by the OP, these posts did it:

Quote from: Awakened_MindThe reality of the pole shift is that during some part of earth's history the magnetic north-south orientation has reversed 180 degrees, once or perhaps more.

Quote from: VitruvianOne of several articles in the Scientific American, discussing why and how often the earth's magnetic field reverses. I'd say you could call that a pole shift.

On another note, somehow I can't shake the feeling that my negative "karma" comes from my posts not being all "GALACTIC ALIGNMENT AND BANANAS THEREFORE 2012 R ALIENS LOL!"-based.

Not geographical, geomagnetic. How can a theory regarding the magnetic reversal of the North-South orientation have nothing to do with magnetism? Seriously.

Again.... Geomagnetic reversal deals with magnetic poles. Pole shift hypothesis refers to a shift in the geographic poles, it's an hypothesis and not to be confused with true polar wander.

#53
Vitruvian And Awakened_Mind,

The pole shift hypothesis refers to the shifting of the geographical poles. Those do not coincide with the magnetic poles (a compass won't point to the north pole, it will point to something close called "magnetic north").

While there is a gradual change in the geographical poles, sudden shifts such as those described in the pole shift hypothesis seem to be all new agey pseudo-science and speculation.

The galactic alignment is the event when our planet crosses the equator of the center of our galaxy, which is a black hole.

That's true. However, we got absolutely no proof that being aligned with a supermassive black hole thousands of light years away has any effect at all. Also, since the Sun crosses the galactic plane about every 33 million years, we can conclude the Mayan calendar (a 26 thousand years cycle) isn't based on that event.

QuoteHoney bees are not the only species that are dramatically falling onto the endangered species list.

Natural and human made changes to the environment are to blame I would guess.

QuoteThere's even an increase in human deaths--some by nature, some by weird and unexplained causes, some by suicide, etc. It's the nature of time, now, leading up to 2012 which supports the prophecies of 2012. The prophecy that's getting most evidence support is that by the end of 2012, two-thirds of the world population will be gone. We're coming to the realization that two-thirds won't die by one single event but many small events as 2012 nears. So maybe it's true that the world population will decline and an order of nature is taking place.

Sources please?

We do know for a fact that life expectancy has been increasing over time. I couldn't find any information on the evolution of mortality rates, though it's reasonable to believe they're decreasing.

QuoteAdun is right about some previous statements but wrong about contradictions toward Aleshah.

Would you care to elaborate? I'm not quite satisfied with just a "you're wrong".

You could but you really shouldn't, pole shift hypothesis refers to something completely different from geomagnetic reversal.
#55
I meant...

A 90 degree turn of the earth's magnetic field? Do mean the magnetic poles? While there is plenty of evidence of geomagnetic reversal, I don't know if we can say the same for a "half-reversal", and how would that affect us?

UFOs? 4th dimension? How do those relate to magnetic fields?

Again, what's a positron mode? And what the hell it has to do with time going backwards or we turning into superconductors? (wtf)

Your post was totally incoherent, didn't make any sense.

If you want to know, I'm 18, but that's irrelevant. My question and the point it makes would remain valid even if I was 5.

aleshah,

I sincerely have no idea what you're going on about.

Well, there is evidence such as the honey bees in North America which are dying off at a very alarming rate, and nobody seems to know why.

roflemons.

Are you serious? Please explain why disappearing bees represent evidence for pole shift theory and/or earth's rotation stopping and/or 2012 crap.

Why is myanmar the land of the tiger? Why didn't it just say myanmar in the prophecy?
#59
If you want to say "god" is the universe then that's a whole different story, pantheism makes much more sense than personal gods.
#60
Sorry, I fail to see how denying a magic man designing reality as we know it implies a materialistic explanation for consciousness.  :-(
#61
I'd say it's all just hallucinations, normal in the hypnagogic state/sp so don't worry about it.

If it'll make you feel better, try to make the hallucinations evolve towards something more comfortable to you. (example: imagine a warm sensation and then think to yourself that's a spirit healer that's taking care of the others) Just work with your imagination and expectations.
#62
Somehow you keep trying to shift the topic to consciousness and qualia and implying I am using science to "suppress considerations of meaning as integral to human existence". The topic was the intellectually lazy patch that is creationism/ID.

It would seem that in your perspective one can only follow either hardcore materialism or silly mystical crap.

That is not my argument.  My argument is that you don't get something out of nothing.  You have been misled into feeling that(...)

You assume too much, I don't believe in that.

QuoteScience is a dumb tool

lolwut

Quoteand you talk as though it's better than philosophy, as though it were a more worthwhile occupation of the mind.

No, I don't. I said they're different things, and they are.

You can't claim which one is more worthwhile, that's relative to the person and to what specific science and philosophy you're referring to.

QuoteThat is the whole problem!  Philosophy encompasses science because science itself ultimately comes down to assertions that people will have to simply agree (or disagree, as is often the case even in peer reviewed journals) upon.  Science is a philosophy, and a damned boring one at that.

Err... no. Science is a system of obtaining knowledge, philosophy is hard to define but it can deal with more subjective and personal things which are out of the scope of science.

QuoteHow can science prove itself?  Scientifically?

If you're talking about the scientific method, logic?

QuoteStuffy technical arrogance and snobbery is not the enlightened view of the creation around you.

What creation?

QuoteTechnical knowledge and mystical experiences can go hand in hand but the attitude you perpetuate absolutely kills what would inspire a richer and deeper understanding of the entire world around us.

Yes, a shame no one takes Ben Stein seriously, had his intelligent and bold ideas been accepted, advancement for mankind would surely come.

QuoteThat's not a scientific enough answer for me!  I want you to scientifically explain to me why green looks green to me and not like red.  Not the wavelengths of the light being different, I know that, I'm an engineering major.  I know all the "right answers" to all of life's meaningless questions.  I'm just saying why isn't black white and all the other colors similarly reversed?  What difference would it make to a tree?  Or a rock?  Why do things even try to grow?  I want that explained scientifically, too!

Wasn't the question originally about clothing? Anyway, what you're talking about now is the whole different subject of consciousness, which is still a mystery. What's your point?

http://www.shoutfile.com/v/pU42Mfcn/Family_Guy_Evolution_Explained

That sounds about right.  :-D

The problem with Ben Stein is that not only he fails to understand what science is, but he also(even though he supposedly did about 2 years of research for this "documentary") calls evolution "darwinism" and says ignorant things like "it can't explain gravity" or "we have never observed a single species evolve".

He argues about something about which he knows nothing and his arguments are pretty much just appeals to emotion. It's very ironic he calls evil the science that's responsible for him being alive.

"Academic merit" is meaningless.

Err... why?

QuoteThe entire public education system is already a joke.  I abandoned that ship a long time ago.

In the USA it seems to be indeed a joke in a lot of schools, with the creationism "controversy" and all. However I certainly hope you were not including universities in that statement.

Quote(If you haven't caught on yet, I'm not Ben Stein.)

Nobody said you were, I merely filled in what was missing in your assertion about his message.

QuoteNo proof that there is intelligence to the universe?  I disagree.  And if Mr. Stein is claiming anything else, I honestly don't care.  What are your thoughts on the nature of existence, Adun?

No, there is none. You can say the "complexity" of the universe indicates an intelligent designer, I can make up 10 other explanations equally valid.

What do you mean by "existence"? Mine? The universe's? I think consciousness is infinite, and not in the after-life sense with heaven/reincarnation/astral planes/etc.

QuoteThere is no readily apparent "practical" application of the arts or philosophy (or even astral projection, cough cough)(...)

That's why philosophy is taught in... philosophy class, not in science class.

As for astral projection, I have no doubt the so called "oobes" are the same as dreams/lucid dreams. I sit on the fence as to whether dreams have an actual existence outside the mind, but all that astral planes/bodies/chakras thing is silly.

QuoteWhy do people wear clothes that are different colors and designs?  Why aren't we all issued standard living uniforms?  Are you going to think that this is a meaningless question and reject the view I offer out of hand?  (Probably.)

Because humans develop different personalities? What the hell as that to do with the topic?

Stein's message is that there is intelligence behind the universe.

... and that it should be taught in school and have academic merit regardless of there not being any proof for it or any practical applications or predictions originating from the "theory".

His message is also that science is evil, leads to killing, etc. (LOL)

His message is also that the theory of evolution ("darwinism" as he incorrectly call it) is wrong. (ignorant)

His message is also that the theory of evolution can't explain the origin of life, gravity or the origin the universe. (ignorant^99)

Basically, his message is "I'm an idiot".
#67
Haha. Stein actually said:

QuoteScience leads to killing people.

The irony of that statement is killing me. What a moron.
#68
None. I guess I'm ignostic and atheist.
#69
lulz is more fun, and more appropriate for this situation I'd say.

I have yet to see proof for "niburu" or a "galactic alignment" (whatever that means). Besides, how the hell is any of those gonna stop the earth's rotation?

This whole 2012 thing is just silly. I remember a few years back nobody would lose time with this crap, but as irony wished now there is even a forum dedicated to it.

Seriously, he is.

This whole "Expelled" thing, it's just mind-boggling to think there are people that ignorant.

How does a regular guy manage to get your IP and track the location?
I suppose that with some hacking skills he could get the IP, but in your position i wouldn't worry because only your internet service provider is able to track the computer's location and i think it would be illegal if they did reveal it to someone (unless that someone is the police with proof the computer was used to do something illegal).

Actually "kore" means "this", to say "that" you should use "sore". ;p
