Basically, 'hypnogogic imagery' is the shapes, colors, and anything else that one sees when they close their eyes and start to become more and more relaxed.  The deepr your relaxation, the more your mind starts to wander and these images begin to show up.

For example......if you simply lay down for 15 minutes and passively stare into the blackness behind your closed eyelids, here is what you're mental dialog may be saying:

"Hmmm.....all I see is blackness.  What the heck am I looking for?  It's just black, with these occasional white spots.  Oh hey, that one in the corner kind of has a greenish hue to it......

"Nope, it's white again.  Hey, that one kind of looks like a basketball....Oops, it's gone.  Hey, maybe this is that hypnogogic imagery that Jeff Mash was telling me about!"

It is frustrating to be drawn here, read about all the super extraordinanry astral adventures and don't have your own.

Hi Jan....

Let me ask you, do you get frustrated watching "Cribs" or "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous?"

In those shows, we are shown how lavish and carefree the homes and lives of celebrities really are.......even though we may never actually attain that kind of status ourselves.  I'm sure you don't watch that show and get frustrated, do you?

However, it would be just as ridiculous for me to tell you, "Here is why you'll never be rich."  Sure, it may be a struggle to earn a 6 figure income, but would I discourage you from attaining that?  Of course not.  For some people, it's easier to earn a lot of money, because they have trained in their fields and professions for such a goal.

Others of us haven't had that much training, but we have seen poor people who have worked at what they love, gone to school to acquire the appropriate skills, and now we've seen them earn the 6 figure salary that they only dreamed about.  The only thing that kept them moving forward was the fact that they knew it was possible!

I don't need to explain the analogy and how it applies to those who would like to learn how to project......I can tell you're a smart individual and you can see the parallels that I'm drawing.

If I can reassure you of anything, it would be this.  I know that ANYONE can project, because I can do it!  I was just like so many of you out there who STRIVED to have one but nothing ever happened.  I can't explain why, all of the sudden, they started to occur with me one evening, but once they did, I knew that anything was possible.....and that if a moron like me could work at it and eventually do it, then you can too.  You just have to believe it's possible, no matter what you're head tells you otherwise.

When this happened, the my player model in the game was jumping off a medium height wall. When my player model in the game landed on the floor of the map he was in, my astral body merged back with my physical body.

Interesting.  I play that game all the time and I never had that happen to me.  I think I bought a defective version!

I also dream about not being able to see in the same fashion.  I like the goggle idea.

Looks like you're making progress then, my friend.  As you have now seen, sometimes getting away from your physical body is enough to kick in the vision reflex.  Next time you do that and it's blurry, just remain calm, take a few deep breaths, and watch as the blurriness clears up!

Believe it or not, a 5 minute astral experience is a very long time!  Most projections last under a minute, but they are not a disappointment in the least bit.  Although I've had a few long projections, most of mine seem to be around 5 minutes or less.

It's probably good to keep your experiences short at first anyway.  It's far more beneficial to have 5 short experiences where you remember extreme detail and clarity, as opposed to one long experience where you forget a lot and don't get a lot of practice with exiting techniques.

Hi Martin....

Depending on what you're doing, the sensations will probably be different.  For example, if you're having a typical out of body experience, you may feel yourself actually PEEL from your physical shell like a banana.  When I roll out of my body, I automatically have full sensations in my astral body, and things seem just like they do when I am completely awake.  In fact, almost everytime I project, I have to purposely thrust my arm through a solid object just to convince myself that I am out and not really awake.  That's how real it can be!

However, if you simply phase into the astral realm, you may not feel a peeling sensation.  instead, you'll probably just feel a little movement forward....possibly a disorientated feeling if you're like me.....and then the astral just fades into view.  From there, you're just as aware as you are in a typical OBE or your normal waking consciousness.

No, they don't have to occur.  Or should I say, you don't have to feel them.  Some may argue that they are there all the time, but you just may not be aware of them because you're not focusing in on them.

From my personal experience, I almost never feel any vibrations.  It's more like a numbness with tactile sensations.  If having an OBE, and I walk on the floor, I can feel myself walking, but sometimes it's like I'm walking on legs which are asleep.  I feel the pressure of the ground but it's a littl detached from me.

However, whenever I pass through solid objects, the feeling is very real.  I can even detect the different layers of material that I go through (like sheetrock, studs, empty space, etc.).

So to answer your question, I wouldn't try to focus on "getting the vibrations," because what this usually does is keep you somewhat focusing on your BODY, when in fact you should be forgetting about your body.

If they happen, they happen.....but not everyone experiences them.

For me, I experience hynogogic imagery BEFORE going to sleep, or when I'm in a trance state.  They are usually fleeting images.  They come and go at will, sometimes lasting only a second....other times lasting longer.  There is usually no point to them, no theme or reason.  They may be colors, objects, or flashes of light.

The longer you drift through this mental state and dive further into it, the more these images become stable and realistic.  You'll start to border the astral realm and experience a three-dimensionalizing of the blackness into which you're looking.  If you reach that point, then you're very close to phasing over into the astral.

Welcome to Integral Philosophy! / Karma
October 29, 2002, 10:37:40
That's a deep question.  The way I look at things, I basically sum it up as "What goes around, comes around."  Period.  Only do unto others what you would have done unto you.

I take this philosophy into account in everything I do.  If I cut someone off on the freeway, I automatically put my guard up, because I KNOW that this is going to happen to me soon.  When it does and I get cut off, I don't get mad, because I'm consciously aware that "I got what was due to me!"

Might seem strange, but it's a recipe for healthy living.  Even if someone cuts me off without me being owed a "cutting off", I try not to get ticked, because I know if I retaliate, it will just come back to me.

So who decides what's good and bad?  Deep down within myself, I just seem to know what is right and what is wrong.  I would think that we all have this natural born ability, if we listen to our heart.

Lysear, you're correct.  I've always been a firm believer that one way to FEED your subconscious some astral projection food is to constantly be thinking about it.  Not only thinking about its application, but knowing that it's POSSIBLE and that you WILL do it.

Before the internet, one could only help to accomplish this by reading books on the subject, but thanks the the web and sites like this, we can all come together, encouraging each other and sharing experiences, tips, and other thought provoking things which help embed the idea of projecting in our minds.  http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Lysear,

If you can do that, then you're definitely on the right track!

Basically, the more detached you become as your body goes to sleep, the closer you come to reaching that thin line between the astral realm and your imagination.  Once you recognize these thoughts as being not of your own, but of something that you're percieving from the astral realm, you know that you're close to the threshold.

From there it can get tricky, because you have to maintain a detached awareness while not losing consciousness....because you're close to projecting!  Once you get the hang of getting to this state, you'll realize how easy it seems and how close you've been in the past (but thought you were so far away!).

Good post Wierdzly.  But just to clarify to some of the newbies, not everyone here practices for hours at a time in special, set-aside times.  You can just as easily practice everytime you lie down at night to go to bed.  I only say that, because I know when I was first starting out, I thought that you HAD to devote at least 1-2 hours of time to practice projecting, or else you wouldn't make any progress.  While the more practice, the greater your chance of learning through experience, you can always practice by watching yourself fall asleep at night.  This is to give hope to all those who say, "But I don't have time to practice because I work a full time job, I have kids to take care of all day, etc."

Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / can't see
October 29, 2002, 10:10:56
I've had lots of ewperience with that, my friend....and I can tell you that it's frustrating, to say the least.

Here is what I do.  If I can't see but I know that I am projected somewhere near my physical body, I simply move as far away from it as I can.  Usually, this means I walk/crawl towards my bedroom door, and once I get out in the hall, my vision slowly starts to kick in.

If it doesn't, I do a couple of things (after I get away from the physical body).

1) I DEMAND clarity.  I simply make a strong mental intention to see, and BELIEVE that my request is being granted.  Heck, you can even use your imagination and imagine that you're putting on "magic goggles" or something, and just the motion of putting them on your eyes can trigger your sight to come into view.

I did this once when I started to fly down the street.  I was flying very sloppily and erratically (like a 12 year old who just jumped behind the wheel of a car!)  At that moment, I *imagined" I had some rocket powered boots on, which would steady my flight path and give me more control.  Sure enough, I instantly got control!  So don't underestimate your mind and it's ability to trigger some of these natural astral reflexes!

2) If I still can't see, I take a few deep astral breaths.  With each breath, I literally feel a sense of energy course through my astral body, and I become more engulfed in the experience.  My consciousness strengthens and my vision becomes almost crystal clear.

Lately, in the last few projections, I've found myself floating in a black void, with no sense of my body or surroundings anywhere.  To me honest, this is the most difficult place for me to be, because I find it hard to leave this black void without losing control.

So what I've done on a number of occasions is to IMAGINE that while in this void, I grab onto something.  For example, last week when this happened, I imagined that I grabbed a handful of grass or weeds.  I started to flail my hands around in this void, groping for those weeds.  Sure enough, I grabbed something, and this gave me something to now focus on.

Then, I simply held onto them, and my vision came to me, allowing me to see that I was under some grassy overpass.

However, as I mentioned this is difficult for me to do sometimes.  Just two days ago, I laid down for a nap and decided to project.  I again found myself in this void, but this time, I decided to try something different.  I decided to wait for an astral scene or something to emerge in my field of vision (like Frank usually does).  I even tried waiting for colors or something to appear, but I got nothing.  I slowly lost control and ended up sitting up in my bed, somewhat frustrated but happy nonetheless for the experience.

So you see, we're all learning here, and sometimes, a lot of trial by error must take place in order for us to strengthen and help others.  http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Also, if I project to a couple different locations, I sometimes forget which order they occured in.

I know what you mean, and I went through the exact same thing.  When I was in your situation, my outlook was this: I'm going to use OBE's as a way to STRENGTHEN my belief in the Bible, not discredit it.  I figured that God created us all as spiritual creatures.  Even the Bible itself is filled with references of people having these "out of body exepriences."  I'm inclined to belief that a lot of the well known prophets such as Ezekiel and John were recounting detailed astral experiences when they were "caught up in the spirit" and they began telling us about their "visions."

You see, like you, I was very unsure.  My church not only frowned on things supernatural, but they seemed to discount things like "reincarnation, " and life after death, even though the Bible is filled with instances of people coming back from the dead!

So this is a personal decision for you, and only you can make it.  But I can tell you that you'll never know which way is right for you until you investigate it yourself.  There's nothing wrong with learning about Out of Body Experiences, because if nothing else, they're just a fascinating phenomenon that seems to occur worldwide in all types of people.  Then you can draw your own conclusions on them after you look into it further, based on YOUR interpretation and not someone elses.

I'm not really sure how to answer this, because for me, I don't really TRY to get into a trance state.  I more or less allow it to happen.

For example, when I lay down, I usually do some rythmic breathing exercises for at least 5 minutes.  After that, my body kind of takes over the process, and I simply detach myself mentally from my surroundings, and watch for any hypnogogic or astral scenery.

But if I were a big practitioner of deep trance states, I probably wouldn't go too much over 30 minutes.  I think it depends on the person.  Some people can't even go to sleep unless they lay there for an hour or more, let alone try to get into an altered state of consciousness.  Since I'm the kind of person that can fall asleep within 10 minutes of laying down, practing a trance-like state for more than 30 minutes seems really long for me.

Well, most of my experiences happen between 4:00am and 6:00am.  This is due to the fact that those times are when I start to gain consciousness after sleeping for awhile.  I've had OBE's at all hours of the day, but most happen in that time window for me.

And location as well, (what area of home, floor/bed/chair, and facing direction N/S/E/W)?

I used to think that the direction my head was facing while sleeping played a role in my projections, but after studying my own experiences, I have concluded that this isn't a factor for me.  I've projected facing in every possible direction.  Right now, my head points south when I sleep, and I've been having a lot of experiences lately.  I know that some books have suggested that you should face north to south, but I don't see any evidence showing that this is better than any other position.

I don't know a whole lot about the brainwave frequencies, and how they can restrict a person from OBE'ing.  However, I'm a firm believer that whatever your dominate brainwave frequency is, if you can at least remember your dreams, than you are *capable* of having an OBE/AP.  Period.

In order for a person to recollect those memories when you're physical body is unconscious shows me that they possess the *tools* to one day become AWARE thatthey are dreaming....and that can be a platform to jump into a projection.

It seems that you and I both had the same motivations.  I've always been interested in the paranormal, even though as a kid, I never thought that an average person like myself would be able to experience anything like this.

Then, after having my first experience 10/4/98, it completely blew my mind.  I was fairly religious in my thinking at the time, so my main goal was to use my OBE experiences to strengthen my Christian beliefs.

Well, it started to have the opposite effect with me.  While my experiences have never proven or disproven the existence of Jesus, they did open my eyes to a lot of religious garbage that we're being taught by today's churches.

For example, a lot of religious institutions have the right intentions, but they're all just a little bit off the mark.  Some promote fasting, which in itself is not a bad thing, because he weakens your body a little bit to be more open to spiritual things.  However, they shadow any good intentions with a bunch of crap, like "you can't wear certain clothing" or "you can't drink alcohol", etc.  Obviously these regulations depend on the specific church you're attending, but you get my point.  With many religions, there is a lot of "controlling" which has nothing to do with your spirituality.

It's like being raised in a zoo, but being fed human food.  Sure, you're getting fed and you're slowly growing, but you can probably develop faster and more efficiently in a better environment.

Anyway, now when I project, my intention is NOT religious at all.  I've already developed my own belief system based on my experiences.  Now my intention is to learn how to induce these at will with 100% success.  That's my first and foremost intention.  Second, when I find myself 'out', my goal is to establish some kind of relationship with a guide so I can always return to him for more instruction.  This has yet to happen for me, so this is why it's still a goal of mine.  After I accomplish that one, I'm sure I would like to help others who are lost in the astral realm to find their way to their respected destinations.

One thing I've learned through all of this, is that you're outlook on your experiences constantly changes.  With each projection, you start developing a belief system as to what these are all about.  In the beginning, I thought I was allowed to do this in order to prove the validity of the Bible.  Now, my perspective is completely different.  We all take what we can from our experiences.  No people will ever see the same exact thing, because we all see things from unique perspectives.  As long as we are growing as spiritual beings, then I feel that we're accomplishing our mission in this life on Earth.
