The only way electrokenisis would extend battery life is if the batteries are rechargaeble. Rechargable batteries have a different chemical internals that allow the equilibrium reaction that produces electricity to be reversed. Over time less and less of the same chemical compound is produced which is why the eventually die.
I wouldn't explain the mouse working for a few seconds again as a 'coincidence'. It seems it could be explained by the internals moving around so another equilibrium reaction could take place to produce a few more electrons. Coincidence is a word usually reserved for events a little more mysterious, that have no material explanation.
