Basically, the five string theories are different aspects of the M-theory (the one stirg theory). First you should understand that the five string theories are all based in ten dimensions, whereas the M-theory is based on eleven dimensions. This added dimension is what fixes the problem. It is similar to this analogy: think of a cube; if you look at the cube two-dimensionally, there are six different objects (the square sides) ; however, if we add a dimension, there is one object (the whole cube).
