Thank you for the responses everybody.

The breathing thing happens during moments when I'm "not" consciously trying to project. Quite often, right before I fall asleep, I'll either here that swoosh sound in which it sounds like something is quickly exiting or entering a cavity, or I'll experience the altered breathing.

I don't tend to travel somewhere when this happens. I think part of my problem is that I'm unclear about what to do when I project. I want to do one of the following:
1. Exit and have one of those higher consciousness experiences people sometimes have.
2. Meet a guide.
3. Visit a friend in a dream (I told him I might do so one of these days).
4. Meet a friend that died a few months ago.

I NEED TO MAKE UP MY MIND!

Plus I think I've been confusing astral energy for kundalini energy and this has scarred me, considering the kundalini problems people often get.

I've had a lot of spiritual experiences other than astral projection in my life. None of them seemed to be dependent upon kundalini activity. Therefore, I don't think I should concern myself so much about possible kundalini problems.

If I sound confused it is because I've been going through a period in which I've been reassessing my spirituality quite a bit. I've been getting rid of some false ideas. Some doors have been opening that I've kept closed. LIFE IS WONDERFUL AND MYSTERIOUS.

Is it it common for people to hear a rumbling sound in their right ear and neck, and to feel pressure in there neck when they tune into their astral body?

For a few days I was afraid that I might have some undesirable kundalini experiences, because of the pressure in my neck.

But then it occured to me that there aren't any chakras in the neck. Therefore, I'm wondering if the pressure I'm feeling in my neck is the astral body rather than kundalini.

Here's a key factor. The other night I was hearing the rumbling in a very slight way. But then I heard that loud swoosh sound near my right ear, the rumbling sound got significantly louder, I felt energy around my entire body, and I started to see psychedelic patterns.

Welcome to Astral Chat! / omg this is truly strange

I just read this at 11:40.

11 x 60 = 660
660 + 40 (the left over 40 minutes) = 700 minutes.

Last night I tried several times to project. I was overcome with subtle energy and heard the usual rumbling sound I hear in my right ear and by my neck. I couldn't project. Instead, several times, my breathing got effected in a really strong way. It is hard to remember how precisely it was effected. Feelings such as air being sucked from my abdomen to my throat area really quick, and then I'd let it out in a steady, strong stream. I also felt a lot of pressure by my neck and in my head.

It is hard for me to recall all of the details, because I was focusing on telling my self to project and contact my higher self, as opposed to remembering all of the details of what I was experiencing. I was trying to contact my higher self astrally, because I know a guy who has done so, plus he knows a guy who has done so, and I've read of a couple of episodes in which people have done so.

Does anybody know what the altered breathing episodes might be about?

Thank you for posting the article. I've been thinking about this sort of thing quite a lot the last few days (especially today), and it's helpful to find an article on the subject.

It is a good thing that they brought in the apple pie analogy.  Other wise it might seem too one sided.

P.S. I'm at work and so far have read just the first 5 pages. Therefore, I my opinion isn't based on the entire article.

Thank you for the responses.

What is funny about this is that I'll feel some fear before I go to bed at night, but when I start to be overcome with astral energy I don't feel significant fear. In fact, I consciously make an effort to project. If somebody (?) tells me to go back to my body again tonight, I'll ask them for an explanation as to why, and who they are.

Last night after I projected  I heard a man's voice. I had never heard it before. I can't remember his exact words, but he said that I should get back to my body now. He also said that I shouldn't project anymore tonight, because I need to save my energy.

The subtle energy kept coming to me so I wanted to project again, but I decided to listen to the advice of the voice and wait until tonight before I project again.

There were also a couple of other people in the back ground. I couldn't see them. One of them asked me if I had gone through psychotherapy. I haven't, but I've been looking into my own mind alot lately. I believe this is part of the reason subtle/astral experiences have come back to me. I don't know why, but I got the feeling that these other people wanted information on me so they could collect a fee.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW MUCH PROJECTING YOU CAN DO?

A short history of me:

1. I experienced astral projection without even knowing about it. This played a part in my becoming spiritually curious even though I was an atheist at the time.
2. I tried to become spiritually enlightened for years. I put a lot of effort into it. I ignored and pushed to the back of my mind things such as astral projection and kundalini yoga, because I was on the path of knowledge, jnana yoga, that sort of thing.
3. I didn't become enlightened, and eventually doubted that such a thing even exists. I also doubted that there is a such thing such as life after death.
4. Due to chronic back pain and other physical ailments, I got involved with the medical theory of Dr. John Sarno. He emphasizes the mind body connection. He states that a lot of physical ailments start at the psychological level.
5. My physical condition has improved since taking this approach.  One of the things you do during this approach is look at things you have been suppressing.  In the process the astral/kundalini aspects of my life have come back into my consciousness.
6. Right now I need to 1) find out if there is life after death; and 2) find out if consciousness emanates from the physical body, or comes from a spiritual realm beyond the physical body. I guess I have no choice but to figure it out, because it's almost as if it's coming after me.

Thank you for the answers.  I read  Robert Monroe book about 24 years. Probably a month or so after I first astral projected.

Why is there one forum for OBE, and one for astral projection? Is there a difference?

Does anything bad happen while astral projecting?

Why in the World do I have the ability to do it, when I didn't seek the ability? I wonder if I'm supposed to do something with it. It seems to be coming to me. My local library has a bunch of books on the subject. I plan to check some out.

Hello:

I'm a new poster.

About 25 years ago I astral projected without even knowing that such a thing exists.

The next day without intending too, just by chance (?), I pulled a book off of a library shelf and it just happened to be about astral projection. One of the things it talked about is how a person vibrates before they astrally project. This is exactly what I experienced before I projected.

I pursued the matter a little bit, but in the end decided not to pursue it further.

Recently I've been examining my personal psychology.  About a few days after starting to do so, just before I would fall asleep, I stated to hear this sound. It's hard to describe. Sort of as if pressure is being released from an enclosed space.

After hearing this a number of times, I remembered astral projection.  The sound stirred my vague memory of what astral projection sounds like. A few days later I experienced the vibrations, told myself to go ahead and project, but didn't.

Then I decided that the next time I started to vibrate, I would go outside and look at three numbers on a car's license plate, and then physically go outside to verify if I actually saw them.

Didn't mean to get your hopes up, but when I actually did project, I tried to do the above, but couldn't find my way out of the house. Perhaps going to a specific location is difficult.

Anyway, I'm not really interested in becoming a frequent traveler, but last night for a few hours, every time I would start to fall asleep,  I would hear the noise I talked about and be overcome with energy that feels subtle (astral?) in nature.

IS THERE A POINT IN PROJECTING ASTRALLY? WHAT PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE? It seems as if I have enough to deal with in my physical life.

DOES ANYBODY ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT ASTRAL PROJECTION IS ALL ABOUT? You can't observe and measure it in the same way you observe and measure the physical World.

PEOPLE CAN COME UP WITH ALL KINDS OF THEORIES REGARDING IT.  DOES ANY OF THE KNOWLEDGE ON IT SEEM VALID?

I ask these questions because I don't know what to do about the experiences I've been having. The self examination process I've been going through includes bringing up repressed emotions etc. I guess a connection to the subtle/astral realm (whatever it is) is something I've repressed.

I'VE ALSO HEARD THIS SOUND AS IF ENERGY IS BEING RELEASED FROM MY NOSE AS I BREATH OUT. HAS ANYBODY EXPERIENCED THIS?

Hello Hejira:

I have a history of chronic pain (mostly lower back pain). Recently I started using a program started by Dr. John Sarno. It is based on the idea that pain is mind created. By mind created I don't mean imaginary. What happens is that repressed emotions cause physical pain by doing things such as restricting blood flow to muscle fibers. The medical community tends to have a lot of problem with this sort of thing, because they don't acknowledge how closely linked the body and mind are. Thousands of people have gotten rid of years of bad back pain etc. by following his program. Many by just reading his book and applying the principles. Since you're open to the idea of astral projection, I figured that you might be open to the idea of the mind body connection.

The book can be found here. Check out the reader's reviews.

The reason I visited this forum is because John Sarno's process has you work on pulling up repressed memories and ever since I started the process, I've started hear the noise that is made before you astrally project. Something I did years ago.

Quote from: hejira2004My first real-time out of body projection was about three weeks ago although I've been "waking up" in my astral body from a dream all of my life.  But I'm really excited about real-time projection!  The way it happened is this---I've had a chronic pain condition for several years and I'm at that place where I'm just sick of being in my body (but I can't die because I have a husband and child) so one day after I dropped my daughter off at school, I came home and went to bed, just because I wanted out of my body.  The emotional state was very strong.  Then I lifted up out of my body and floated down the hall!  I sort of stalled going around the corner to the kitchen (I'm figuring the feng shui people would say there's a blockage there so I'm going to cure that) but then I started "swimming" and got going again very well!  Then I went back to my body.  Since then, I've done real-time projection about five times, never out for more than a few seconds.  I get very excited still and can't sustain the state.  It's the most fun, or at least parallels the most fun!,  I've ever had.  I want to get good enough at it to start doing research.
