it IS very scary when it happens though...
whether amplified by your own fear, or a result of your fear, it is very easy to react just the way you did, jump up, turn on the lights, and wtf
and your reaction is never the same, sometimes a sensation, sound or feeling you can objectively perceive...other times it freaks you the hell out
for myself, I can handle sounds, shapes but when I feel pressure, brushes, or pokes etc to my body....that freaks me out and I have to focus very hard to not panic. I usually lose and do just what you did, turn on the lights and play a video game for a while...
