Hi there,
A number of years ago I practised a meditation technique referred to as yoga of the sacred light and sound. This yoga was based on two and a half hours of 3rd eye meditation a day, plus a vegan diet. Talk about extreme!!!! The sole purpose of this meditation was to leave the body and make contact with the light. Some people refer to this as your higher self etc. People who have reported a tunnel and contact with the light in NDE's are really reporting on the same effect that this meditation creates. What is possibly happening to you at the moment is that you are making contact with your higher self from a distance and I will explain more about this later, but first a cautionary tale.
Now I don't really want to go into this too much because it is potentially very very dangerous, but what seems to be happening to you is organic and therefore less likely to be dangerous. Here is my warning first. Overstimulating the third eye can lead to altered states of consciousness which in themselves are great. However, if your third eye is split (I mean that it is damaged in some way, out of shape, rotating anti-clockwise, or pulled out of your vertical power current- this where each of your chakras are connected to) it is likely to be overactive in your day to day life also, and if you further overstimulate it, it can be a major problem and can lead to psychosis. People in China for example, who do too much energy raising or use the wrong methods of energy raising through chi-qung can end up manic or psychotic. There is actually a diagnosis in the Chinese form of psychiatry referring to chi-gung psychosis.
This is why I like the New Energy approach of Roberts so much for his advice on energy raising and storage in the dan tein (or base level storage point of the hara line). I do not personally use it, but having had severe problems in the past with my third eye (and I mean severe), I find that people who recommend kundalini yoga and kriya yoga to open up chakras, particularly the third eye, are doing so often very ignorantly and without the awareness of how important it is to be able to ground, and to maintain that groundedness when opening the higher chakras deliberately. People who are attracted to mystical work, or out of body experiences commonly have difficulty coping with material reality, and like to explore mystical states of consciousness to cope with this. I am generalising because I have personally experienced this process myself, and work in the field as a facilitator and psychologist using methods of transpersonal psychology and energy work in groups and in group healing.
Now onto your question
To make contact with the light, you need to learn to be able to concentrate in great depth. Before you can make closer contact with the light, you need to be able to hold it in your awareness for an extended period of time. If you do this correctly, the light should start to approach you and get brighter and brighter. Once it approaches beyond a certain point, it will become extremely bright. Now, before you can leave your body and approach it, you need a method to leave the body. That is where the sacred sound comes in. If you want to pursue this further do it through a teacher that has been there and can keep you safe. You can find resources on the net about this method. As I went to write about the technique involved in sacred sound meditation, my internet connection broke off three times, so I am guessing that you need to find this out another way if it is right for you
Without proper guidance, attempting to contact the light through meditation and concentration on the scared sound can be dangerous. Before you can hold the higher states of consciousness, you need to learn to ground yourself as you open your chakras
Good luck
