I had experienced something similar before I knew about projection or OBE.  I woke up to a dream of a dark woman looking at me and screaming at me.  I was completely conscious at this time (mentally) and told myself it was just a dream, and I was not frightened.  Then she disappeared, but my body was still asleep in sleep paralysis, and I had a hard time waking myself up.

I don't how exactly this is related to your experience, but take it for what it's worth.

I have recently started to try and practice OBE and projecting over the last month, and I have had some success, though limited.  The technique that seems to work best for me is picturing myself in another part of my room and repeating myself that I will project.  Also all my success has come around 4 or 5 a.m. after about 4 hours of sleep.

Here are the details of my success: (Just 3 experiences so far)

1st experience was after reading about the above method.  I had been trying other methods previously with no success.  After focusing on another part of the room and chanting to myself that I will project, I began to felt vibrations throughout my whole body, and then quite a loud noise, kind of like static, but it was different, and there was a lot of popping.  After this I attempted to move my hand but my physical hand didn't move, but my projected hand (Not sure what to call it) separated, and felt very heavy and difficult to move, and I wanted to test it.  I was able to pass my hand through the side bars on my bed, and also through my own knee.  I felt nothing in my leg, but I did feel my hand move through the space where my knee was.  After this I became a little nervous, and convinced myself to wake up, though it was difficult, and I was in sleep paralysis, but I did wake up.  After deciding to go back to sleep, the vibrations and noises kept coming back, but I didn't want to attempt any more, so I couldn't sleep again for the rest of the night.

2nd experience happened much like the first, same timing, same method.  After feeling the vibrations take over I decided I wanted to leave my body, so I decided to try the roll out method.  This worked, and I found myself next to a pile of blankets, with what I assume to be my physical body.  This really threw me for a loop and I wanted to get back in.  Before going back I remembered I wanted to check for the silver cord, and I'm convinced that I saw it coming from the blanket, and then I just rolled back into my body, and woke myself up again.

3rd experience:  This one I tried as I was going to sleep at the beginning of the night.  I allowed my body to go to sleep, I'm not sure if I reached the sleep paralysis state or not.  But I then felt the vibrations (not so strong this time) and focused on floating above my body.  I felt myself leaving feet first this time, and then things started moving really fast.  I didn't experience the loud noise as before, and I don't think I was very lucid.  I do recall deciding to float out of my window, and then I was flying.  (I live in Japan by the way)  I started to fly over an Asian landscape pretty fast, and then I arrived at some kind of gate on top of a mountain.  After this I don't have any memory, and I woke up in the morning.  I think this last experience may have been more of a lucid dream than projection, because I don't feel like I had much control over it.

Anyways, I hope some people will leave some comments that will help me understand the things I have experienced.
