Treatment of the Evil Eye
http://www.quranichealing.com/bpi.asp?caid=87&cid=1089

The power to harm others by a look or glance, known as the evil eye, is true. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet (SAWS) said, "The effect of the evil eye (al-ayn) is real for if there were anything which could overtake destiny, it would have been (the effect of) the evil eye." (Muslim)

To ward off the effect of the evil eye, one should say, upon seeing someone or something that pleases him, "maa shaa-Allah" (only that which Allah wills comes to pass!), and then he should pray to Allah to bless that person or thing.

If the person with an evil eye is known, he should be asked to wash his body and retain ant wasted water that he has used.  The water should be poured over the affected person from the back, and he will-with Allaah's leave-recover.

See hadith Sahih by Al-Abani in Sahih al-Jami(3908)

Ibnul-Qayyim said, "Among the formulas of seeking Allah's refuge and those (encompassing) ruqyah are: frequent recitation of surah Al-Falaq, surah An-Nas, surah Al-Fatihah and Ayatul-Kursy. One should also recite Prophetic supplications (related to seeking Allah's refuge and protection)."

Treatment of Magic

One should protect oneself from the effect of magic before it happens. Among other things, this can be achieved by demonstrating sincere devotion and worship to Allah alone, and seeking His protection by frequently remembering Him and by reciting Prophetic supplications at suitable times. As for treating magic after its occurrence, the affected person should be patient with Allah's decree, repent for his sins and insist on receiving treatment only from those (Muslims) who are known for their piety and uprightness.

In Sword against Black Magic & Evil Magicians,Wahid Abdussalam Bali had this to say about the different types of magic (sihr):

"Types of Sihr

Number One
Sihr of Chaldeans who used to worship the seven planets, believing the planets control the world.  These are the people Prophet Ibrahiim (Abraham) was sent.

Number Two
Sihr of people who have fantasies and hallucinations.  Man's soul has been created weak and is submissive to fantasies.

Number Three
Seeking assistance of worldly spirits (Jinn)who are of two types.
1. Believers in Islaam
2. Disbelievers who are demons
This type of sihr is known as putting a spell on someone or using assistance of jinn to perform acts of sihr.

Number Four
This includes magic and eye catching trickery.

Number five
Marvelous objects such as geometrically-made artwork.  This should not be considered as sihr as it is the driving force behind more advanced machines and other marvelous objects.

Number Six
Use of specific medication in foods and ointments, there is no gainsaying the effect of such medication as the effect of hypnotism is clear.

Number Seven
The Sahir will claim they know the supreme name of God and that the jinn obey their command in many things.

Number Eight
Slandering people is one of the softer forms of sihr which is very common among the people."

Forbidden Supplications

Ibn Taimiyyah mentioned that Allah's answering someone's du'aa or fulfilling his wishes does not necessarily mean that the method that person used is acceptable in Islam. Jabir reported that the Prophet (SAWS) said, "Do not supplicate against your own selves, your children, your servants, or your property, lest you should supplicate at a time when supplications are accepted." (Muslim)

Ibn Taimiyyah specified some of the errors that people may make when supplicating to Allah, such as the following:
- Associating partners with Allah.
- Praying for unlawful or undesirable things in Islam.
- Supplicating in a manner that is not pleasing to Him, as Allah says: "Call upon your Lord in humility and in secret. Surely, He does not love the transgressors"
http://www.quranichealing.com/bpi.asp?caid=87&cid=1089

[Quraan 7:55]

According to Ibn Taimiyyah, "There are (some) people who make forbidden supplications, and they get what they ask for but with a great deal of harm. Others also make undesirable (makrooh) supplications and they still get what they ask for...These and similar kinds of supplications are forbidden even if those who make them get their wishes granted. Those who believe in the effect of forbidden supplications are mostly ignorant people who do not realize the conditions for supplication. This generally happens to people who grope in utter darkness, namely the disbelievers, the hypocrites and those who commit major sins so much so that their hearts have become black as a result of sins and thus, they cannot distinguish between truth and falsehood. This is why such forbidden supplications continue to be a source of confusion for those whom Allah has not guided and whose hearts He has not illuminated with knowledge."

Ruqyah and Supplication

Ruqyah is similar to supplication. While it is preferred to use supplications that the Prophet (SAWS) taught us, Muslim scholars agree that it is also permissible to use supplications he did not teach us. The condition for doing so is that such supplications must not contain forbidden words, nor be forbidden in themselves or bound to lead to forbidden things, such as giving up the supplications that have been reported from the Prophet (SAWS) altogether. However, it is better and safer to adhere to those supplications that the Prophet (SAWS) taught us.

Consider the following hadith, which illustrates this point well: Abu Hurairah narrated that a Bedouin entered the masjid while the Prophet (SAWS) was sitting. He then offered two rak'ahs of salah and said, "O Allah, have mercy on me and on Muhammad, and do not have mercy on anyone along with us. 'The Prophet (SAWS) said to him, "You have narrowed down a thing (Allah's mercy) that is broad." (Ahmed and Abu Dawud)

Types of Ruqyah

There are two main types of ruqyah:
1. Lawful Ruqyah: This is the kind of ruqyah that the Prophet (SAWS) used. It consists of permissible supplications as evidenced by Qur'anic verses and the authentic texts from the Sunnah, but without any additions and without practicing it in an enigmatic manner.
2. Forbidden Ruqyah: This type of ruqyah may contain words of shirk, mysterious charms or anything else deemed forbidden in Islam like using pork, blood and etc...

Permissible Ruqyah

Ibn Hajar said, "Muslim scholars are in unanimous agreement that ruqyah is permissible if (the following) three conditions are met:
1. Only Allah's Words (i.e., the Qur'an), Names or Attributes can be used.
2. It must be in (comprehensible) Arabic or intelligible words in another language.
3. Those taking part must believe that the incantation cannot have an independent effect, but that it is Allah the Almighty who causes it to have effect." (Fath Al-Baree)

As is the case with supplications being permissible so long as they do not contradict the principles of Islam or lead to shirk, the same ruling applies to methods of ruqyah that have not been reported by the Prophet (SAWS). However, such ruqyah should not contain mysterious words or be performed in an enigmatic manner that is reminiscent of the practices of magicians and charlatans.

Ibn Qudamah said, "Imam Ahmed was told about a man who claimed to neutralize magic by putting water in a pot and reciting incomprehensible words among other things. Imam Ahmad then disapprovingly shook his hand and said, I do not know about this (absurd practice)."' (Al-Kafee)

A Muslim should be extremely careful about these matters and always refer to the Qur'an and the Sunnah whenever he comes across something with which he is unfamiliar. Obscure practices that find no support in the Qur'an or the Sunnah should be rejected. Therefore, one should avoid confusion and simply go to the essence of what ruqyah actually is: a means of supplicating to Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, through legitimate means coupled with the sincere practice of Islam and belief in Allah.

We conclude our study with the following invaluable quotation from Siddeeq Hasan Khan in his book "Sincere Devotion":
"All acts and supplications that are bound to cure diseases are . . .permissible to practice if the words used in them are from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, or if they are supplications and practices reported from the early pious generation of Muslims, which are free from shirk; otherwise, (such practices) are forbidden and constitute acts of polytheism..."

"Indeed, Allah the Almighty is sufficient for His obedient servants if they are not attached to other than Him and (do not seek) recourse (except with) Prophetic supplications and permissible (types of) medicine. Whoever avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, but he who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful. Given that shirk can easily be committed without realizing it, one should exercise extreme caution to avoid it."

Q :

1. After a family dispute, a relative of ours threatened to place a charm to prevent the marriage of my younger sister. Several years have passed since then and she is still not married. What is worse, my mother has been going to an astrologer to try to break the spell she claims to have been placed on my sister. My brother and I have tried hard to persuade my mother that this is not acceptable in Islam, but she would not listen to our advice. This has delayed our own marriages. We have tried to take some action and threatened to stop writing home, but our mother is still continuing to see the astrologer and says that she will not stop until our sister gets married. What advice do you have for us? How should we deal with our relative?

2. A few months back, some members of my family died in a car accident. Investigation of the accident has proven that there was no mechanical fault, nor was there any carelessness or negligence on the part of the driver. It seemed that the driver could not turn the steering wheel and the gear box was jammed and the brakes failed, leading to the accident. A later check up on the vehicle showed none of these faults. Some people suggest that this is the work of evil spirits or black magic. How does this explanation fit in the Islamic teachings? If it is true that such an event could be caused by such a spell or evil spirit, how can these be countered?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A: Allah has mentioned black magic in the Qur'an more than once. He mentions that two angels were sent down at the time of Prophet Suleman and taught black magic to some people who asked to learn it. The angels warned them that such learning will lead them to disbelieving in Allah. What they taught those people could achieve the results of bringing about an estrangement between a man and his wife. But Allah says in the Qur'an that those who learned black magic could not harm anyone with it "unless Allah so wills." Allah also mentions black magic in the story of Prophet Moses and his encounter with Pharaoh. When Prophet Moses called on Pharaoh to relinquish his claim to being the lord of mankind and to believe in Allah as the only God in the universe, Pharaoh challenged him with his magicians. Moses accepted the challenge and people were gathered to see the combat; Moses invited them to demonstrate their powers and they threw their ropes and staffs which appeared by magic as if they were snakes. Moses told them that all that they could master was magic which had no reality. He threw his staff and by Allah's will it was transformed into a real giant snake which swallowed what the magicians had produced. At that moment, the magicians realized that Moses had the backing of much superior power than theirs. They declared their belief in the Oneness of Allah, prostrating themselves in submission to His will.

Some people suggest that black magic could be brought about by charms, spells and certain invocations using hair or old bones and the like. I very much doubt that this is so. If a charm of any sort could bring about such bad effects as black magic is said to produce, then it should be possible to counter one charm with another. It would have been permissible in Islam to resort to wearing some charms in order to dispel the effect of others. But the Prophet has categorically forbidden wearing any charm of any sort and for any purpose. I am, therefore, more inclined to say that black magic does not operate with anything that has real substance. This is not a mere personal opinion. I am guided by the Qur'anic statement describing what Pharaoh's magicians produced. When Moses invited them to produce their trick, their ropes and staffs, as Allah says: "So appeared to him as if they were moving." In other words, it was all a mental trick. The staffs and ropes did not move, but Moses and all those gathered to witness the challenge thought so.

Similarly, the magic taught by the two angels in the story of Solomon produced estrangement between man and his wife. This could easily be the result of a mental trick. In his well-known book "In the Shade of the Qur'an", the late Sayyid Qutb writes: "Magic is the production of illusions, subject to a magician's desires. It does not offer any kind of new facts or alter the nature of things... Through it, one is capable of influencing other people's minds, causing them to think and act according to one's suggestions." He then states clearly that he is not prepared to go further than that in explaining what black magic is. In the light of the foregoing, I do not think that the marriage of a woman can be delayed through black magic, especially when the magician does not even know who would propose to her. It is more likely that prospective suitors would think twice before making a proposal to this young woman, if it is rumored in her locality that she is under the spell of black magic. Nor could the car accident mentioned by the second reader be caused by black magic, since magic may affect the mind of a human being but could not jam the brakes of a car or its steering wheel. I wonder whether the investigations of the car accident had looked into the possibility of the driver dying a natural death before the accident occurred. It may be that he lost the ability to move his hands and legs as he was in the throes of death, and thus lost control of the car and the accident happened. Whatever the case may be in these two incidents, I am extremely reluctant to accept that they are the result of magic.

Perhaps I should add that magic can be countered only by reading the Qur'an and seeking Allah's help and protection. Nothing else need or could be done to counter the effects of magic, if it happens at all. Most probably magic has disappeared. Pharaoh's magicians gave it up and submitted themselves to Allah and taught it to no one else. Had it been practiced on a wide scale, anyone who had a grudge against another would have gone to a magician to place a spell on his enemy, or kill him in an accident or in some other way which will ensure that he himself would escape punishment. The fact is that criminals find it necessary to commit crimes themselves, risking being caught and punished. If you look around you, you will find that no one is possessed by an evil spirit and no one falls victim to magic.

Those who are said to be possessed may be suffering a mental illness which can be treated by psychiatrists. As for the Islamic view on magic, it is very clear-cut. It is forbidden for a Muslim to learn or practice magic. Indeed, when a person has learned magic, he is deemed to disbelieve in Allah. It is also forbidden to wear a charm in order to protect oneself against magic. Similarly, it is forbidden to go to an astrologer or fortune-teller or indeed anyone who claims to be able to talk to the jinn or influence their actions or put a magic spell on someone else or break a spell to release a person from its effects. The Prophet is quoted to have said: "A person who goes to an astrologer or a fortune-teller disbelieves in what has been revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him)."

On the basis of the above, my advice to the brothers who have written the first letter, is that they must make it clear to their mother and sister that they cannot in any way sanction or approve the mother's trips to the astrologer. She must stop and trust Allah to bring about what is best for her daughter. Most probably, the mother will not listen to words of sense. Therefore, they should exert whatever pressure they can without offending their mother.

For example, if they contribute to the finances of the family, they should obtain a promise by the mother not to go to the astrologer again if she wants their contributions to be continued. If that is taken very badly by the mother, then at least she should promise not to spend a single unit of what they pay into the family budget in order to pay the astrologer. Moreover, they should practically demonstrate that they do not believe that it is magic that has caused their sister not to get married. I strongly advise them to go ahead and marry themselves, without waiting for their sister.

Why should they, when the Prophet encourages young people to get married? If this will create a problem within the family, then they should make it clear to their parents that their sister will not be the first girl to remain single and that they believe that the publicity that has surrounded her case is preventing her marriage. They should not suffer as a result. As for the writer of the second letter, I strongly advise him not to pay any attention to hearsay. He should accept the accident as something that has happened by Allah's will. No one dies before his time. Let him remove from his mind any thought of magic being the cause of the accident.

Some Facts:

Black magic is part of the evil of this world. Those who pursue it - will definitely receive their punishment from God. Your question is whether it is God's will to have black magic! it is an agreement between practitioner and the demon. Only god can save you if you truly wishes.

Why do people resort to black magic, Jadoo, etc.?
Generally, people are driven to black magic due to jealousy.

When a person has a flourishing business or popular and holds a distinguishing postion in society, etc. this is not tolerated and accepted by others. People desire that those prosperities be taken away from their brother. This jealousy causes a person to harm his brother. His ultimate purpose is to cool his eyes by witnessing his brother's downfall. Thus he stoops to the despicable and Haraam act of Jadoo to achieve his ambition.

Islamic Cure for Evil Eye
http://www.quranichealing.com

Q: Respected Sheikh, As-Salamu `alaykum. I would like to ask you about the "evil eye". Is there something really called "evil eye"? And is it true that it inflicts harm on people? If so, what is the Islamic cure or way of protection against such evil? Jazakum Allah khayran.

A: by Dr. As-Sayed Nuh

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, thanks for forwarding this question to us. We implore Almighty Allah to make our humble efforts come up to your expectations.

As regards your question, it is to be stated that the effect of an evil eye is a fact. This is supported by many proofs from revealed texts and reasoning. Imam al-Bukhari reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The effect of an evil eye is a fact."

However, the evil eye can never harm unless Allah wills so. Hence, it shouldn't be a cause of fear or terror to anyone, for supreme power and might are for Almighty Allah alone and He is the Only One we should fear. It is in Him that we should seek protection against Satan and the evil eye. Both al-Bukhari and Muslim reported in their authentic collections that `Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to tell me to recite ruqyah for protection against the evil eye.

Elaborating on the evil eye and the Islamic cure for it, Dr. As-Sayed Nuh, professor of Hadith Sciences at Al-Azhar University, issues the following Fatwa:

"Islam draws a Muslim's attention whenever he/she beholds something great. One should say: "Whatever Allah wills is done, no power save with Allah". Allah Almighty says, "If only, when thou enteredst thy garden, thou hadst said: That which Allah wilteth (will come to pass)! There is no strength save in Allah!..." (Al-Kahf: 39)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said: "Upon beholding something attractive, try to recount Allah's glorification by saying, "Allah is Blessed!" or "May Allah bless you!" etc.

Envy and the evil eye have a common factor in breeding contempt and hatred, and showing or feeling resentment of someone's success or advantage. This is what the evil eye normally aims at.

Both are supported by many proofs from revealed texts and reasoning. However, they do not automatically affect a person and can never harm unless Allah wills so. Hence, they shouldn't be a cause of fear or terror to anyone, for supreme power and might are for Almighty Allah alone and He is the Only One we should fear. It is in Him that we should seek protection against Satan and the evil eye.

Moreover, one should never, if they don't have proof, accuse anyone of being envious or evil, for this may result in breeding contempt and discord among people.

As for precautionary measures against envy or the evil eye, one may do the following:

1- Seeking Allah's protection against the evil eye and envy
This can be done by remembering Allah at all times and this is an impenetrable shield against Satan and his devils. Allah says: "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of Daybreak. From the evil of that which He create. From the evil of the darkness when it is intense. And from the evil of malignant witchcra. And from the evil of the envier when he envieth." (Al-Falaq)

2- Observing piety, showing obedience to Allah and forsaking sinful acts

Allah says, "But if ye persevere and keep from evil their guile will never harm you. Lo! Allah is Surrounding what they do." (Aal-`Imraan:120)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his cousin, `Abdullah bin `Abbas: "Observe Allah's duties and He will protect you; be pious to Allah and He will always support you..."

(This Hadith is classed as authentic by At-Tirmidhi in his book As-Sunan under the chapter "Concerning the Day of Judgment)

3- Demonstrating patience and perseverance

This means that one should never show any sign of being affected by envy, nor should one get overwhelmed with thoughts on it. Rather, one should show patience, for that will definitely drive the envious or evil ones to doom.

In his commentary on the previous issue, Ibn Al-Qayyim states that the third precautionary measure against envy is to show patience rather than waging war against the envious or showing signs of being harmed by them. Nothing grieves or inflicts pain or even doom on the envious or evil one than seeing that his evil act or scheme has not affected the target. This is the effect of patience, reliance on Allah and putting one's trust in Him. Allah says: "That (is so). And whoso hath retaliated with the like of that which he was made to suffer and then hath (again) been wronged, Allah will succour him. Lo! Allah verily is, Mild, Forgiving.þ" (AL-Hajj: 60)

In this Qur'anic verse, we can see that Allah has guaranteed victory for a victim of contempt or hatred, even if he has tried his best to avenge himself of the assailant. This means that a person who shows patience, despite being a victim of hatred and contempt, deserves strong support.

4- Putting one's trust in Allah

This is one of the strong precautionary measures against envy and oppression. Allah says, "And whosoever putteth his trust in Allah, He will suffice him..." (At-Talaq: 3)

5- Sincere repentance to Allah.

If a person remembers the favors Allah has bestowed on him and returns everything that he has wrongfully taken from people with the resolve not to return to such a sin again, this will definitely bring him back to the right path. He will attain Allah's forgiveness and this will drive him away from the evil eye. Allah Almighty says, "And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed." (An-Noor: 31)þ

6- Demonstrating a "turn the other cheek" gesture

This means that a victim of envy and the evil eye should try to be good to those who envy him or give him the evil eye. He should try to be good to them by speaking kindly, offering them gifts, feeding them and showing that he cares for them, as well as being a friend in need. Allah Almighty says, "The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend.þ But none is granted it save those who are steadfast, and none is granted it save the owner of great happiness." (Fussilat: 34-35)

The point here is that showing good gestures to one's foe can change him from an enemy to a friend.

7- Saying a particular du`a'

This is based on the fact that the Angel Gabriel used to make du`a' upon Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) whenever he became affected with anything.

`A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: "Angel Gabriel used to pronounce some words upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to relieve his pain. He used to say: "May you get relief from the pain, cured from the disease, and be protected from envy and evil eye by the virtue of Allah's Name." (Reported by Muslim)

Abu Sa`eed also mentions that the Angel Gabriel once came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him: "Are you affected with something?" The Prophet answered, "Yes". Gabriel said: "May you get relief and be protected from evil by the virtue of Allah's Name." (Reported by Muslim)

8- Washing off the effects of envy

This is done by pouring the water on a person affected with envy and the evil eye.

This is based on the Hadith reported by Abu Umamah, Sahl bin Hunayf on the authority of his father who told him that as they went out one day with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) upon reaching the valley called Al-Harar at Jahfah, Sahl washed himself and appeared as having a very fine figure. This attracted `Amir ibn Rabi`ah to the extent that he actually said: "Wow! What a nice and delicate figure! You look like a charming lady!" Upon uttering this remark, Sahl fell unconscious, and when the people took him to the Prophet, he said: "Do you suspect someone?" "Yes", they replied, "We suspect `Amir ibn Rabi`ah". The Prophet called him and reprimanded him, saying: "Why try to kill your brother in faith? Why not say upon seeing something fascinating: 'Allah is Blessed or may Allah bless you...etc?'" To wash off the traces of envy, `Amir was told to wash his face, hands, elbows and thighs, and then to wash his feet and his private parts, over a bowl. Then the contents of this bowl were to be poured over Sahl bin Hunayf, and the bowl turned upside down. Upon doing this Sahl recovered.

(Classed as authentic by Imam Ahmad in Al-Musnad, and by Ibn Majah)

Ibn Al-Qayim commented on this process saying:

"Anyone who denies, mocks or has doubt about the effect of this Prophetic way of healing will never benefit from it. The same applies to anyone who does it in way of trial without full conviction. Why not regard this as part of the privileges in the Islamic perspective instead of condemning it. Medical practitioners acknowledge that in the field of medicine there are some areas that are untouchable and are somehow deemed as very unique."

Ibn Hajar says that the aforementioned process of washing away the effects of envy is meant to be done after being affected with envy.

Islam has also drawn attention to a precaution against that effect. This is what the Prophet means by ordering us to utter Allah's Glorification when we have something good: 'Allah is Blessed!' Also we can supplicate for the person by saying: 'May Allah bless you!'"

Q:What is the spirit, and how does it affect us?

A:There are many worlds, among them those of plants, animals, people, and jinn. Our visible, material world addresses itself to our senses, and is the realm where God Almighty gives life, fashions, renews, changes, and causes things to die. Science concerns itself with its phenomena.

Above this world is the immaterial World of Divine Laws or Commands, the spirit's home. To learn about this world, consider the following: A book cannot exist without meaning, the main part of its existence, regardless of our excellent printing press or paper. The essence of life and the law of germination and growth stimulate a tree's seed to germinate underground and grow into a tree. In their absence, there would be no trees.

Menstruation prepares a womb every month for insemination through a (biological) law. Millions of sperm head for the womb, but only one fertilizes the ovum. Another (biological) law causes menstruation to stop until birth. An embryo develops into a person through other (biological or embryological) laws. The Qur'an says: We created man from a quintessence of clay. We then placed him as a drop in a place of rest firmly fixed. Then We made the drop into a leech-like structure suspended on the wall of the womb, and then of that leech-like structure We made a chewed-like substance. Then We made out of that chewed-like substance bones (skeletal system). Then We clothed the bones with flesh (muscles). Then We developed out of it another creation. So blessed be God the best to create (23:12-15).

This process occurs within three veils of darkness: He created you in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness (39:6). These are the belly, womb, and caul or membrane; the fetal membranes' constituents; or the decidua's three regions: the decidua basalis, decidua capsularis, and decidua parietalis. The verse includes all of these meanings.

We derive such laws from these processes' almost never-changing repetition. Observing surrounding (natural) phenomena reveals other laws, among them gravitation and repulsion, and water's freezing and vaporization.

The spirit also is a unique living and conscious law issuing from the World of Divine Laws or Commands: Say: "The spirit is of my Lord's Command" (17:85) If the spirit had no life and consciousness, it would be a "regular" law; if a "regular" law had life and consciousness, it would become a spirit.

Science Cannot Define or Perceive the Spirit

All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are made up of more minute particles. But the spirit is a simple, noncompound entity, invisible but knowable through its manifestations in this world. We accept its existence and see its manifestations, but cannot know its nature. Such ignorance, however, does not negate its existence.

We see with our eyes. Although the main center of sight is located in the brain, the brain does not see. You do not say: "My brain sees," but rather: "I see." But what is this "I"? Does it have a brain, a heart, and other organs and limbs? Why are we unable to move when we die, although all our organs and limbs are there? Does a factory operate by itself, or does something else (i.e., electricity) cause it to work?

Any disconnect between the factory and its electrical source can reduce the factory to a heap of junk. Is this comparable to the spirit–body relationship? When death severs this connection, the body must be disposed of quickly, before it begins to rot and decompose.

The spirit is not an electrical power, but rather a conscious, powerful thing that learns and thinks, senses and reasons. It develops continually, usually in parallel with the body's physical development, as well as mentally and spiritually through learning and reflection, belief and worship. As the spirit determines a person's character, nature, or identity, each person is unique, although all of us are created from the same elements.

The Spirit Needs Our Body

The spirit must use material means to be manifested and function here. As the body cannot contact the World of Symbols or Immaterial Forms, the spirit cannot contact this world if there is no human heart, brain, or other bodily organs and limbs to mediate. The spirit functions through the body's nerves, cells, and other elements. Therefore, if bodily systems or organs go awry, the spirit becomes disconnected and unable to command the body. Death occurs if this failure or illness severs the spirit–body relationship. Some meaningless hand or finger movements can be produced by stimulating certain areas of the brain, but these are only automatic bodily responses. The body needs the spirit, which is conscious and has free will, to produce meaningful movements.

Although psychoanalysts have offered explanations for dreams, dreams cannot be said to consist of the subconscious mind's jumbled activities. Almost everyone has had true dreams. Many scientific or technological discoveries were seen first in dreams. Therefore, dreams point to something—the spirit—within us that can see in a different way while we sleep. Although the spirit sees with our eyes, smells with our nose, hears with our ears and so on, some people can see with their fingers or the tips of their noses, and smell with their heels.

The Spirit and Our Face

Our face opens on our inner world, for it discloses our character. Psychologists assert that almost all movements reveal character. Such observations resulted in physiognomy, the art of judging character from facial features. The spirit determines these features.

Our body's cells are renewed continuously. Every day, millions of cells die and are replaced. Biologists say that all bodily cells are renewed every 6 months, and yet the face's main features do not change. We recognize individuals through their unchanging facial features and fingerprints. A finger's cells change, but its print never does. Each individual's unique spirit stabilizes these distinguishing features.

Our Spirit Makes Us Unique

Our body experiences uninterrupted change via physical growth and development until a certain period, gradually becoming stronger and more perfect. Decay begins when this growth stops. Unlike our body, we grow in learning and development, decay spiritually and intellectually, or stop and change direction while developing or decaying. Our moral, spiritual, and intellectual education does not depend on our bodily changes.

Furthermore, our physical structure does not affect our moral, spiritual, and intellectual differences. Although composed of the same elements, we are morally and intellectually unique. Which part receives this moral and intellectual education? Which part is trained physically? Is physical training related to learning or moral and intellectual education? Are physically well-developed people smarter and more moral than others? If not, and if physical training or development do not affect our scientific, moral, and intellectual level, why should we not accept the spirit's existence? How can we attribute learning and moral and intellectual education to the brain's biochemical processes?

Our physical changes engender no parallel changes in our character, morality, or thinking. How can we explain this, other than by recognizing the spirit and its function as the center of thinking and feeling, choosing and deciding, learning and forming opinions and preferences, and causing character differences?

Our Spirit Feels and Believes or Denies

Each person has innumerable complex feelings: love and hate, happiness and sadness, hope and despair, and so on. We like and dislike, appreciate and disregard, experience fear and timidity as well as encouragement and enthusiasm. We repent, become excited, and long for various things. We have hundreds of words that express human feelings. Moreover, we do not all "feel" the same way.

We may reflect on our surroundings, the beauty of creation, develop ourselves through learning, compare and reason, and thus believe in the Creator. Worshipping and following His Commandments develops us morally and spiritually until we are perfected. How can we explain this if we do not have a conscious spirit? Can we attribute them to the brain's biochemical processes?

If we are no more than a physical entity and attribute all our movements to the brain's biochemical processes, why should we obey any laws? As our body is renewed every 6 months, the following conversation would be entirely logical:
- Judge: When did you murder the deceased?
- Defendant: One year ago.
- Judge: The murder was committed a year ago. The defendant's cells, including those of his trigger finger, have been replaced. As the actual murderer cannot be punished, the jury should vote for acquittal.

How can anyone be no more than a physical entity, made up of movements, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and decisions due to the brain's biochemical processes? Such assertions are untenable. The main part of our being is our living and conscious spirit, which feels, thinks, believes, wills, decides, and uses the body to enact its decisions.

The Spirit Is the Basis of Human Life

God acts in this world through causes. However, in many other worlds (e.g., those of ideas, symbols or immaterial forms, the inner dimensions of things, and spirits), He acts directly, and matter and causes do not exist. The spirit is breathed into the embryo directly, making it a direct manifestation of the Divine Name the All-Living and therefore the basis of human life. Like natural laws, which issue from the same realm as the spirit, the spirit is invisible and known through its manifestations.

In this world, matter is refined in favor of life. A lifeless body is lonely, passive, and static. But life enables a bee to interact with almost the entire world so that it can say: "This world is my garden, and flowers are my business partners." The smaller a living body is, the more active, astonishing, and powerful life is. Compare a bee, a fly, or even a micro-organism with an elephant. The more refined matter is, the more active and powerful the body is. For example, burning wood produces flame and carbon, and heated water vaporizes. We cannot see the electrical energy in the atomic and subatomic worlds, but we know of its presence and power though its manifestations.

And so existence is not limited to this world. Rather, this world is only the apparent, mutable, and unstable dimension of existence, behind which lies the pure, invisible dimension that uses matter to be seen and known. As the spirit belongs to that dimension, it is pure and invisible.
The following arguments for the spirit's existence also point to the Creator's existence:

• Just as our body needs the spirit to command and govern it, the universe needs God to bring it into existence and to command and govern it.

• Each body has one spirit that makes it alive and governs it. So there must be a single Lord, without partner, to create and govern the universe. Otherwise, disaster and confusion are inevitable.

• The spirit is not located in a specific bodily place or part. It may even leave the body and, as while dreaming, maintain its connection via an attached cord. Likewise, God Almighty is not contained by time or space. He is always present everywhere and nowhere, whereas the spirit is in the body and contained by time and space.

• There is only one sun, and the world is far from it. However, the sun is omnipresent through its heat and light, and through its reflection can even be in every transparent thing. Therefore we say it is nearer to things than things are to themselves. The spirit has the same relation with the body and each cell. This analogy may help us understand God's relation with existence. He controls and directs all things at once like one thing, and although we are infinitely far from Him, He is nearer to us than we are to ourselves.

• The spirit is invisible and its nature is unknown. In the same way, we cannot think of or imagine God as He really is, for His Essence cannot be known. Like the spirit, God Almighty is known through the manifestations of His Names, Attributes, and Essence.

Stress is the most common aliment of modern age. It has been implicated in the causation of peptic ulcer disease, coronary heart disease, depression, auto immune disease, hypertension, diabetes and even cancer. In milder form it manifests in form of unrest, violence, at work, school and home. Common medical problems like tension headache, insomnia, and obesity are also attributed to unusual stress. None of us are free from stress but some deal with it better than others.

Stress results from the following factors:

a. Fear of the unknown and trying to see through and control the destiny.
b. Losses in our life of people and things dear to us and our inability to recover those losses.
c. Inner conflict between our heart and mind between what is known to be the truth and our failure to accept it as truth. Acceptance of truth may require changing our habits and way of life which we may adhere to for some reason like pleasure, joys, taste, pride in race or heritage etc.
Let us examine how Quran deals with such situations.

Our losses are a trial for us:
"Be sure we will test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives, but give glad tidings to those who are steadfast, who say when afflicted with calamity: To God we belong and to him is our return. They are those on who (DESCEND) blessings from God and mercy and they are the once that receive guidance. 2:155

Thus in Islam, we do not have concept of the ownership of goods and life. Everything belongs to God and returns to him. So if we don't own that thing why mourn our loss?

a. Our destiny is predetermined. We do not have control on that part. What we have control over is a limited free will, that is our actions, our choice to do good or bad, to believe in God or not to believe in Him, but we have no control over tomorrow's event not related to our actions i.e. whether my wife will have a son or daughter, whether his/her eyes will be brown or black, or whether I will have an accident or not tomorrow. WorTying over such things is of no use.

b. Rejection of faith in Quran is called a disease. This denial of truth is due to arrogance.

"In their heart there is a disease and God has increased their disease and grievous is their penalty because they lie to themselves." 2:10

Therefore after lying to ourselves, we set up an inner conflict - between heart and mind. In order to contain that conflict the mind sends signals to glands for secretion of harmones like adrenaline which leads to rapid heart rate, perspiration, tremor, the basis of lie detector test.

This lying conflict could be due to "SMALL" crimes like theft or adultery, or big crimes like rejection of God.

3 stages of spiritual development of soul age

a. Nafsul Ammara: -The Passionate soul "I do not absolve myself Lo the (human) soul is prone to evil, save that whenever my Lord has mercy. Lo, Lord is forgiving; merciful." 12:53 (Surah Yusuf)

This soul inclines toward sensual Pleasure, passion and self gratification , anger, envy, greed, and conceit. Its concerns are pleasure of body, gratification of physical appetite, and ego.

Hadith "your most-ardent-enemy is your evil self which resides within your body" (Bukhaii).

If this evil soul is not checked wiR lead to unusual stress and its resultant effects.

- b. Nafsul Lawanunah (The Reproaching Soul). "Nay, I swear by the reproaching soul" 75:1

This soul is conscious or aware of Evil, resists it, asks for God's grace, and pardon, repents and tries to ammend and hopes to achieve salvation.

"And (There are) others who have acknowledged their faults. They mix a righteous action with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will relent toward them. Lo! Allah is relenting, merciful." 9:102

Hadith "These are two impulses within us. One spirit which calls towards good and confirms the truth. He who feels this impulse should know that it comes from Allah. Another impulse comes from our enemy (Devil) which leads to doubt and holds untruth and encourages evil. He who feels this should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil."

This soul warns people of their vain desire, guides and opens the door to virtute and righteousness. It is a positive step in spiritual growth.

c. The satisfied soul (Nafsul Mutmainnah). "O (you) soul in (complete) rest and satisfaction. Come back to your Lord, will pleased (yourself) and will pleasing unto him. Enter you then among my devotees, enter you in my heaven." 89:27-30

This is the highest state of spiritual development. satisfied soul is the state of bliss, content and peace. The soul is at peace because it knows that inspite of its failures in this world, It will return to God. Purified of tension, it emerges from the struggle with obstacles blocking the peace of mind and heart.

What should we do in panic and despair? In panic non-believers behave differently than believers. They have no one to return to, to ask for mercy and forgiveness, their life is this life, which they cannot control, thus get more depressed and increase in their state of wrong doing. Then we will see that if they are used to casual drinking will start drinking more and become alcoholic, or a barbital criminal.
On the other hand a believer should do the following:
a. Increase dhikr (Remembrance of God)
"who have believed and whose heart have Rest in the remembrance of God. Verify in the remembrance of God, do hearts find rest." 13:28

b. Increase their prayer.
"O you who believe, seek help with steadfastness and prayer. For God is with those who are steadfast." 2:153

c. Ask forgiveness
"And I have said: seek forgiveness from your Lord. Lo He was ever forgiving." 71:10

In addition to above we are also asked to continue to struggle to up-grade ourselves.
" surely God does not change the condition in which a people are in until they change that which is in themselves." 13:11

In summary, I conclude that stress results from lack of inner peace due to conflicts within us and leads to external disturbances in our behavior and health. Inner peace can only be achieved by believing in God, the All Mighty, and remembering him frequently and asking for his help and forgiveness in times of difficulties.

This issue is now being discussed in various psychological circles in the Islamic and Western world. A few years ago, the idea of a spiritual being possessing a human being was completely rejected by western psychologist as a form of superstitious beliefs carried over from the Middle Ages. More recently, as science matured and felt secure it began to re look into the possibility of the influence of such beings on humans. Chief among the modern psychiatrist and thinkers who discussed the possibility of spirit possession is Dr. M. Scott Peck the author of "The Road Less Traveled". In one of his books he mentions that he has personally attended to cases of spirit possession in which the patient were cured after exorcism in a vary short time that does not happen in psychiatric treatment. Among Muslim psychologists there is an active group who have internet site headed by Dr. Mona Amer in which they have long discussions and evidences on this matter.

During the 1980's I was elected as a member of the World Health Organization committee (WHO) on traditional medical practices. In one meeting in Geneva we listened to doctors and researchers who delivered a number of papers in which they documented the dramatic improvement of patients in Africa and Asia who were treated by religiously oriented healers who practiced exorcism. My own research was on the traditional healing in Ethiopia and Sudan. I have also reported on similar cases.

In general those who are considered as possessed are those who are diagnosed by psychiatrists as suffering from schizophrenia and mania. The term schizophrenia is a very ambiguous term and psychiatrists give this label to any body exhibits the symptoms of delusions or false beliefs or who suffers from hallucinations in which he/she sees things that are not there or hears voices from invisible beings. In my study I listened to Muslim healers who strongly criticize this broad classification of mental illness. They say that to consider anybody schizophrenic only because he/she sees things and hears voices, is like a doctor who says that all patients who have fevers, headaches, and nausea are suffering from malaria. Since a high fever and headache can be caused by so many illnesses to stick to one diagnoses is not scientific. The same applies, as these healers argue, to the concept of schizophrenia. To be deluded and to hallucinate can be caused by a physical-biochemical imbalance in the brain or by a spirit possession or by alcoholic poisoning or some other reasons. The traditional healers also claim that the only evidence for the bio-chemical theory of schizophrenia is that patients improve when they are given the prescribed drug, but at least 25% or more of them do not improve and they become permanently kept in mental hospitals as chronic schizophrenics. These healers argue that if improvement is the evidence, then they have a number of cases of chronic schizophrenics who responded to their therapy in a much shorter time.

From this, we Muslims should not discard the possibility of Jinn possession. We have in the traditions of our prophet (pbuh) and the biography of early Muslim physicians much evidences to the value of reading the Quran and using its verses as therapy and a form of exorcism. We should be open minded in accepting the physical as well as the spiritual aspects of human nature. In May 2001 a very interesting conference was held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in which psychiatrists and well-known traditional muslim healers discussed the value of Ruqaiyyah (prayer for therapeutic purposes as well as exorcism of Jinn possession). I took part in this conference and I was happy to see western trained Arab psychiatrists accepting the possibility of Jinn possession and showing their readiness to cooperate with Muslim healers by referring to them those who do not benefit from their modern psychiatric therapy.

It is very important for those who accept exorcism not to treat those possessed as sinful or deviant persons. Just as the body may develop a disorder, the soul can also be disordered. Both are a form of Ibtila (Trail) or test.

There are many worlds, among them those of plants, animals, people, and jinn.

If not, and if physical training or development do not affect our scientific, moral, and intellectual level, why should we not accept the spirit's existence?
