Title: Any1 remember Comet Kohoutek in 1973?
Post by: iNNERvOYAGER on December 30, 2006, 15:42:29
Hi, I'm just an old timer who remembers Comet Kohoutek back in 1973.

My friends and I went to an out door music festival and on the way a parade of people were carrying large banners that explained how the world would be distroyed by Kohoutek.

The day after the "deadline" had passed, the same people were seen moppying around and seemed to be depressed because the world hadn't come to an end on schedule.

I didn't know it at the time, but sounds like it was part of the David Berg Children of God group.

"David Berg sometimes predicted apocalyptic events, though all of his predictions failed. His most well-known prediction was that a comet would destroy the United States in 1973 or 1974. He also predicted that the tribulation would begin in 1989 and that the second coming of Jesus Christ would happen in 1993."

With all due respect, I agree that we must be cautious and learn to read the signs of impending events for the sake of survival, but at the same time we can be cautious of impending hysteria.

I believe that most of us has an ego that automatically feels imortal and that it can't concive of non existance. The ego also feels that it is very special and that it can only live in a time of great and profound circumstances and that it can't possibly imagine that the world will go on after the person has died.

History is peppered with countless examples of people who aggresively prosilitize how the world will end during their self proclaimed very special life time.

I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing out a common type of human behavior that has been observered throughout the ages.

On a side note, the mega volcanic caldera under Yellow Stone national park in the state of Wyoming is actually 40,000 years overdue in it's 600,000 year cycle. Scientist have already measured expansion of the mega chamber.

Hi InnerVoyager

I like that.  It explains a lot.

I believe that also.

I'm trying to figure out what part of us wants the world to end during our lifetime, when our body dies. It's kind of a paradox, and I don't know the answer.

I am a Soul in body.
Body dies, Soul not.
;)

Hmm...
Are we really know what people think when they die? :)

I just read Adrian's Approachto2012.pdf paper.

I like what he says about 2012 becoming the start of the next age, instead of the end of the world.

There's an interesting chart that shows the interval between separation epochs becoming  exponentially closer as we approach 2012.

Not to mention the tendency for the ego to think that "If I'm here now, Important Stuff must be going to happen.  Nothing inconsequential for this ego."

I think it's more to do with a longing for a forced change in living patterns. Blowing up the planet is also a way of attaining an adrenaline rush : p

Although many people who claim huge things such as "the world is ending NOW" may actually have been pursuaded by good cause to have those beliefs,

I think the basic desire that these claims are based upon is the desire to be important, or "have a purpose."

If these people focussed their lives on creating their own purpose, and not trying to conjur one up from dust, they wouldn't need to rely on stories of impending doom, that they themselves may know at a deep level not to be true.

i actually don't want the world to end. i enjoy living. i like being with other people. it's a frustrating belief that all of this will end. part of me thinks i'll be alone, and the other part thinks about how crappy my life has been, and how it will suck that i can't be happy for a little bit before it ends.
