Post by: MadLordNad on January 21, 2005, 12:58:56
I was wondering how many songs and artists we could name which mention Astral Projection. Maybe get a list compiled for a good CD to burn.

Here's two off the top of my head from the Classic Rock genre:

Magic Carpet Ride -- Steppenwolf
Dream Weaver -- Gary Wright

Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow - Twilight

I close your eyes and whisper Goodbye.
You will never see how I cry.
I can recall what you said to me once:
If I leave there will be a sign
And the twilight will show me tonight.
From dusk to dawn. That's when we arise.
All souls forlorn, come down from the skies.
We're called the mist by the human race.
But we do exist in a million ways.
OH I'M IN THE TWILIGHT WORLD TONIGHT
AND I OBEY THE MOON.
I'M IN THE TWILIGHT WORLD TONIGHT.
THE MIST WILL DANCE AND THE ELVES WILL SING THEIR CROON.
My eyes will not believe the sight.
They dance in trance this magic night.
The sound that did enchant my ears.
I feel my eyes release the tears.
I know the answer now. To die, I am
no longer afraid somehow. And now I know
that there is another way for me to go.
And now they show that there is life in the afterglow.
I can feel the presence of the unknown side.
The shivers infest my body. This cannot be denied.
OH, WE'RE IN THE TWILIGHT WORLD TONIGHT...
No way! This can't be a dream!
I pinched my skin to make sure I was awake.
What I see might be too much for me to take.
They dance in a circle just above the ground
and I can see you and it looks like you're still alive.
Somehow you seem so relieved.
A nightbird chasing the shadows fly right through your body
and then I know that you don't really exist.
You're just a reflection in this midsummer dance.
I feel my heart pounding faster ever than before,
I must have stopped breathing. The image of you fade.
And now I know why had the strong feeling that I must find
this place you once described and to see your final dance.
Will we ever meet again? No!
OH, YOU'RE IN THE TWILIGHT WORLD TONIGHT...
They fade away and so do I.
You're gone, I'll always wonder why you came
and made me realize that you exist there in the twilight sky.
Is this a dream or plain reality?
It feels more like a trip to what I never thought I'd see.
Suddenly fear took a hold on my mind.
I had to move away unless I would go blind.
OH, YOU'RE IN THE TWILIGHT WORLD TONIGHT...
I, I know the answer now.
To die I am no longer afraid somehow.
So fade away...

Hey, MadLordNad...

Funny running into ya'..   They let me in too.  -     lol

The only one I can think of (and I can't even remember the melody to this) is Wisdom Chain by Jon and Vagelis.

Quote
Doo da, da
Did we know the Seven Rays throughout reality
We see how wonderful releasing it is.
Do we cross the Great Divide that spellbinds us
To one degree, this further dimension it is.

Locked in our memory.
Locked in the wisdom chain.
Locked in our memories.
Locked in the wisdom chain.

Or at least it sounds like it..

Hi people
I adore this music and text of Nightwish and you?

A nocturnal concerto
Candlelight whispers me where to go
Hymn of gathering stars as my guide
Whilst I wander on this path of the night

Embroidery of the stars
Undress my feelings for this earth
Send me your salva to heal my scars
And let this nakedness be my birth

Macrocosm poured its powers on me
And the hopes of this world I now must leave
The nightwish I sent you centuries ago
Has been heard by those
Who dwelled in a woe

The distance of our bridal bed
Await for me to be dead
Dust of the galaxies take my hand
Lead me to my beloved``s land

Departed by the guillotine of death
I received a letter from the depth
The dream of my lover it carried inside

Caressed by the sharpest knife
I asked you to be my wife
Rays of the setting sun
Were my tears wept upon promises undone

Come to me
Make me believe
To you and your love again

Above the universe
Beneath the Great Eye
I shall desire you forevermore

Great title - Astral Romance and beautiful music, but Tarja's vocal is a little too operatic for my taste (maybe it's because i'm used to growling/screaming vocals from death, doom and black metal).

"Looking down upon the bed, suspended by a silver thread, I'm breathing."

Live - Supernatural (a cover of someone elses song I think?)

"Out of body experience, I flew around a hospital room once, on intraveineous Demarol, it ain't supernatural...supernatural or maybe."

I'm surprised no one mentioned "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down.

I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time.

and also Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd :

a soul in tension that's learning to fly
condition grounded but determined to try
can't keep my eyes from the -circling- skies
tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

above the planet on a wing and a prayer
my grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air
across the clouds I see my shadow fly
out of the corner of my watering eye
a dream unthreatened by the morning light
could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

there's no sensation to compare with this
suspended animation, a state of bliss
can't keep my mind from the circling sky
tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

I am really beginning to think that Queensryche's song Silent Lucidity is about astral projection.

Here's half of the song:

So here it is, another chance, wide awake you face the day.
The dream is over, or has it just begun....?

There's a place I like to hide,
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize that you were scared.
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears
retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind.

Commanding in another world
Suddenly you hear and see this magic new dimension
I........will be watching over you
I........am gonna help to see you through
I........will protect you in the night
I........am smiling next to you
In silent lucidity

Visualize your dream,
Record it in the present tense,
Put it into a permanent form,
If you persist in all efforts,
You can achieve a dream come true...
...a dream come true...
...a dream come true...

If you open your mind to me
you won't rely on open eyes to see.
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down; a new world will begin.
Living twice at once you learn
you're safe from pain in the dream domain
a soul set free to fly.

A round trip journey in your head
master of illusion, can you realize your dream's alive
You can be the guide
I........will be watching over you
I........am gonna help to see you through
I........will protect you in the night
I........am smiling next to you
In silent lucidity

Silent Lucidity was a great song and I haven't heard that one in years but I loved it.

I'm thinking of taking some of the songs listed here and putting them on a CD so I can have driving music. As I'm always on the road traveling to and fro and making long trips, it seems like a good way to keep AP on the mind even when you can't be practicing. Might even record some affirmations and layer them into the music.

There's a couple Ronnie James Dio and Rainbow songs which mention it too. I'll post them after I compile the titles.

That's what I was hoping to do also!  8)

Also echoes by Pink Floyd:
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stares and
Something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

And now this is the day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streamin in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide

Didn't Shpongle do a song about it, called Behind Closed Eyes or something?  Anyway, I don't think Learning to Fly is really about AP.  David Gilmour is very big on actual aviation, owning as he does a huge range of airplanes.

How about 'And She Was' by Talking Head? This has got to be one of the best.

-----------------
And She Was
------------------

And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming
See the lights of a neighbor's house
Now she's starting to rise
Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes

The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was)
The world was moving she was floating above it (and she was) and she was

And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe
Drifting this way and that
Not touching ground at all
Up above the yard

CHORUS

She was glad about it... no doubt about it
She isn't sure where she's gone
No time to think about what to tell them
No time to think about what she's done
And she was

And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions

CHORUS

Joining the world of missing persons (and she was)
Missing enough to feel alright (and she was)

I'm kind of finding some of these that are listed to be ambiguous. I mean, some of these might have references similar to the state or action of astral projection, but that doesn't neccessarily mean that each was intended by the artist to mean as such. The state of dreaming, and also just the state of freedom and release from stess (which are all common means of inspiraction for songwriting) bring about imagery of free floating or falling free, and release. Like I said, some just seem to be ambiguous, ha.

I believe Behind Closed Eyelids could as well be about seeing things behind closed eyelids under the influence of hallucinogens or alike. A great track anyways. :)
