I just use it for car emergencies or when I am trapped in traffic to let someone know I will be late.

They are a great convience, but I know some folks who seem to have them glued to their ear.

I was in line at the post office the other day and the guy behind me started arguing with his wife over kitchen repairs.  Did I want to hear that...no.  Fact is most conversations are not something anyone would want to listen to.

Another fact -- any privacy we had in the USA is long gone.  Anything using a radio signal like a phone or computer, even satelite TV can be monitored.  New cars will have monitoring devices - which might be great if you are ever caught in an avalange under a mountain of snow, but otherwise - somebody can monitor you. And somebody is selling devices to parents of teenagers that will be beep them if the kid drives outside of the monitored range or over a certain speed.

Welcome to our brave new world of high-tech but no privacy.

I just hope I am never so desperate for a job that I take one doing the listening in as I generally get annoyed with most of the cell phone conversations I am forced to overhear.

When I am really getting testy -- or just plain bored -- I sometimes start making comments on the conversations and giving advice. [:P] Try it sometime.  Get everyone else waiting in line to join in.  It is great fun and does get the message across that if you are going to have private conversations in public, then the public is invited to join in.  Of course, it usually does tinkle off the person with the phone, but everybody else in the area has a good laugh.
