creative geniouses ! I've heard that if you watch the "Wizard of OZ" with the sound off and "the dark side..." playing it is exactly in tune !!! I never tried it yet. My favorite song is "the great gig in the sky"...
Did you ever listened to "the piper at the gates of dawn" ? Their first album....very very different but the most psychedelic music ever played with guitars...[:D]love it, it's like acid fairy tales...

curiousgirl

heh heh, yeah "piper at the gates of dawn" was back when they had that crazy creative guy, Sid Barrett... he was a big influence on them for a while until they booted him out (i guess he was just too heavy of an acid user and became unreliable or something... can't remember the whole story).  his solo stuff tends to have that same fairy tale/medieval/nonsensical theme.  a lot of it's acoustic and has that medieval bard sound, in a way (at least in my opinion).  if you haven't heard him, make sure to check him out.  it's not quite the same as his pink floyd days, but still good.

LA FORET MAUVE

yes, Syd Barret was the shooting star of Pink Floyd...
A great talent, imagination, etc, but became, hem, mentaly "disturbed" by something linked by this heavy use of drugs like "mandrax" (not sure of what is it, maybe a kind of somnifer)...sad story...but still incredible and unique album...

realism

Yeah, basically Sid Barret just took WAAAAAAAAAY too much acid, bit their first album which he prettey much wrote, was one of the best. And yes, matching Dark side of the moon with the wizard of Oz does work.If you press play on the CD, just after the 3rd roar of the MGM Lion (the lion that roars before the end of the movie) then it is an exact link, up, even down to fine details, like dancing to the beat.... its quite eerie.. And Roger waters is a complete and utter genius, i heard he was a child prodigy.. not sure what he was a prodigy at, but he was one[:D]
So, Link, you could say you are right in both ways, they were and are genius's, and they were quite stoned, but that would be the least of their adventures...
Speaking of adventures, La Foret, what and adventure it was listening to dark side of the moon after consuming those little babys you used to have as an avatar..

realism

sorry, i meant the start of the movie.. playy the cd at the 3rd lion roar at the start...

DSOM is the best of the whole history of PF.

When I was in college I went to see the DSOM laser show at the Maimi Planetarium about 5 times. And I don't do dope. Its just absolute poetry and sublime music in one. Its like a gift from the gods. Its like Bethoven's 9th symphony. They both move me inmensely.

I'm also partial to Animals, Wish You Were Here and the Final Cut.

I did get very drunk once and watched AND SANG the entire The Wall movie. Very Drunk.

they are geniuses.  though the album would make much more sense if you were tripping and listening to it.  the lyrics may sound a bit weird at first but if you listen to them while tripping they make a whole lotta sense.  their songs tie into every part of life.  every religion.

Celeste

I love Pink Floyd too! I love Division Bell, Momentary lapse of reason. I've seen them twice--always a great show!

It is hard to say whether syd barrett would have remained just eccentricly creative if he hadn't done so much acid. He had his psychotic break an lapsed into schizophrenia never to return.

I read that when Pink Floyd was in the studio recording Shine on you crazy diamond (which was about Sid) some balding, over weight guy wandered in an sat on the couch. Roger Waters said they didn't think much of it because often people would come in when they were recording. After the song they realized it was Sid. He asked if he should strap on his guitar or something? Kind of sad.

I'm right with Celeste on this one - their last couple of albums are brilliant. David Gilmour really proved to have the staying power, and his guitar work is magic!

Gilmour is one of the very few guitarists in the world that know how to play a Telecaster exactly the way Leo Fender designed it to be played - clear crisp almost ethereal high notes and deep lows that get bent up from almost subsonic.

James.

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", were the song writers creative geniuses or just stoned?  I am interested to hear what people have to say on the subject.  I personally think that it is creative genius but I think that is just because I want to believe that[;)].
