Physical pain is a message from the body.  It is fairly easy to learn to turn the pain off once the message has been received.

Emotional pain, welsmertz (sp?) as the Germans put it, or angst, is a choice we make, based (usually) on our value judgements and unfulfilled and unrealistic expectations.

In short:pain is mandatory--suffering is optional.

Pain...if we are spiritual beings and if we are here for a reason, for bigger purpose, i think that in such case pain its important. Imagine that before borning, people are spirits without any pain. Free souls flying and enjoying nature.

If that is true, how can someone nderstand the nature itself? how can you look at it? You mind its so pleased with nice things (there is no pain!) thta they get lost in their self illusions of happyness. Sooner or later they will get tired of reality, tired of doing always the same nice things!

So, they need a body. They a need a crude and rude thing that will give them pain. Pain will teach them to look at things with diffeent eyes. I mean, not everyone will reach that level (like buddhists do).

Only a few will take the oportunity of having suffering in their lifes and use that as a way to learn how to observe reality (i will not speak on such teaching now...study buddhism to see what i mean).

If there is no purpose in life, things are a little different in my view. If thee is no purpose in life, that means that we born just as a casual "accident" of nature. In that case pain its a biological mechanism, useful for warning you about bad things happening with your body.

Even so, you can use pain as a way to learn the nature of spirit and as a way to open yourself to reality (again, i am speaking on buddhist teachings).

These stuff about buddhism and pain that i speak about its amazing and can make th emind of one to look like wind or a sea of wisdom. I dont follow that path because i am weak and because meditating and observing reality like buddhists do, its vey hard.
