I'm not really sure what you're asking.. are you asking if I associate the song H with shedding the ego?

I think the best song about ego is on the Lateralus album, I'll post the lyrics..

Reflection

I find that I can see a light at the end down
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole.
Defeated I Concede and move closer. I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness. How pitiful.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping.
The moon tells me a secret. My confidant.
As full and bright as I am, this light is not my own
A million light reflections pass over me
It's source is bright and endless.
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her we are lifeless satellites drifting...
And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt
Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.

So crucify the ego before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all this,
Imagine the unconceivable,
Just let the light touch you and let the words spill thorough
Just let them pass right through, bringing out our hope and reason.

before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.

H.

What's coming through is alive
What's holding up is a mirror
What's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn my tinkle to wine

They're both totally void of hate
But killing me just the same

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
Considerately

Venomous voice, tempts me
Drains me, bleeds me
Leaves me cracked and empty
Drags me down like some sweet gravity

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
I feel this coming over like a storm again

I am too connected to
To slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me
And considerately killing me...
And considerately killing me...

Without the skin here
Beneath the storm
Under these tears now
Walls came down

As the snake is drowned
As I look in his eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times
I could have cried then
I should have cried then

As the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
I will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I don't mind
I don't mind!

I am too connected to you
To slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me
And considerately killing me...
And considerately killing me...

reflection is about the source, and the state betweeen, and H. is about the state (and feelings) of realization during the actual shedding

I'm gonna have to disagree with your "H" analogy.  I've read some opinions on the matter at toolshed.down.net, and this one seems to ring true to me.

Most people relate H. to relationships, that's great all songs are open for interpretation. I think H. is much deeper, and is connected to Pushit, and Prison Sex.
I have read somewhere, I really don't remember where, that Maynards son's name is Devo H. Keenan, his middle name being H and nothing else. and that the song H. has to do with maynard stopping the abusive cycle, "do unto others what has been done to you." like in prison sex. "what's coming through is alive, whats holding up is a mirror." mirror reffering to maynard's son Devo and he see's himself in Devo. "my blood before me begs me open up my heart again." his blood before him being Devo, and opening up his heart again, which is empathy because maynard has been the abused one, and he is opening up his heart again to Devo after it has been closed from abuse.
"they're both totally void of hate, but killing me just the same." Both being void of hate is Devo and his wife, and it hurts him when he's at the point of hurting and stops himself because he wants to sop the cycle of abuse.
"the snake behind him" would be his past which is filled with abuse and it's "Venomous voice, tempts me, drains me, bleeds me, leaves me cracked and empty." obviously doing unto others tempts him from his past and it hurts him.
I think this song also deals with lacrymology, which is the study of tears, and it is said that crying helps deal with emotional pain. "I cuold have cried then, I should have cried then"
This whole "conflict" of Good VS Evil is what maynard has reffered to as the cartoon devil and angel on his shoulder, or also known in psychology as the id, the ego, and the superego. Maynard feels this "conflict" "coming over like a storm again." Maynard is "too coonected to Devo to slip away, to fade away" to continue the cycle on Devo. And "days away he feels Devo touching him and changing him, once more, and conciderately kill him"
The storm then drowns the snake, and as he looks in the eyes of Devo his fear begins to fade, recalling all of the times he has died and will die, it's alright because its for Devo.
Again, I don't remember where I read this. Tool writes songs vagely so they can relate to many people and something to them.

All music is open to interpretation, Maynard James Keenan won't explain his songs though, he says most people are way off when they state their opinion about what his songs mean.

So the only way to 'truly know' is to speak with MJK himself.

I question the motive behind your question though, are you attempting to create a situation in which you can try to prove yourself superior?

I have opinions about what the two songs are about, and I think most people would agree with them, but my intention was not to display my 'interpretation skills' it was to share what I think are great lyrics.  I don't state my opinions as facts, which is what any interpretation of a TOOL song is, an opinion, unless of course you talk with Maynard personally.

Post by: Rastus on September 23, 2004, 14:14:35
My intention was to make people read the lyrics, then read the lyrics.  Often people listen to a song and form an opinion about it.  Them sometime later they are listening to it and 'suddenly' they get a whole new interpretation.  This is especailly true for people that listen to a song, but haven't actually read the lyrics (since many people listen to a song on the radio and don't have the CD, assumeing the CD even has the lyrics included).  And sometimes you hear the lyrics but can't quite understand the words.

That's what I meant.  Many people don't relate Tool to anything spiritual whatsoever.  Sure, ask the composer in person, whom refuses to explain his songs.

i understood these lyrics only when started to work on myself and in "meta" path

your interpretation rings true, i, too, thought about devil and angel concept

but to me, these songs are much more, heh i  shed a tear right now

what's coming through is alive
What's holding up is a mirror
What's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn my tinkle to wine

They're both totally void of hate
But killing me just the same

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

dellusions of searching for permanence in pleasure, isolation from unfulfilment, contrast between reason and craving

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
Considerately

crushed beliefs, illusions desolving accopanied with intense emotions

Venomous voice, tempts me
Drains me, bleeds me
Leaves me cracked and empty
Drags me down like some sweet gravity

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
I feel this coming over like a storm again

I am too connected to
To slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me
And considerately killing me...
And considerately killing me...

attachment to self

Without the skin here
Beneath the storm
Under these tears now
Walls came down

due to suffering illusions are destroyed, the skin is body armouring, the storm is the awakening

As the snake is drowned
As I look in his eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times
I could have cried then
I should have cried then

death of self, fallen memories of screwed up situations, emotions reemerging

As the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
I will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I don't mind
I don't mind!

cause i'm naked and immortal, and death is just next stop on the way

I am too connected to you
To slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me
And considerately killing me...
And considerately killing me...

but the shell i live in reminds me about this life and the world

and i lived through each of these steps, and here i'm now

I only really like Lateralus, and it's the only Tool album i own so i haven't really read many lyrics off any other albums. I do think Lateralus is an amazing album though.

---

Parabol/Parabola

So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful.
Wide eyed and hopefully wild.

We barely remember what came before this precious moment,
Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal. All this pain is an illusion.

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Alive, I

In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Twirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. We are eternal.
All this pain is an illusion.

A lil out of topic but... am I the only one who ignores (on purpose) the lyrics of every songs I listen too?  I just find the lyrics distracting; and often really "dumb" (like "I love you because I love youuuuu Babyyyy" etc..).

And if you havn't listened to his other band 'A Perfect Circle' they are awesome too.  I prefer the 13th Step album.

yaaaaaaay more tool-fans!
i blame Moonburn for this, he made me listen to them and i now can't get enough of my Man-yard.

anyways, my favorite song would be SOBER:
There's a shadow just behind me,
shrouding every breath I take,
making every promise empty,
pointing every finger at me.
Waiting like a stalking butler
who upon the finger rests.
Murder now the path called "must we"
just before the son has come.
Jesus, won't you bonking whistle
something but the past and done?

Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over.
Why can't we drink forever.
I just want to start things over.

I am just a worthless liar.
I am just an imbecile.
I will only complicate you.
Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down.

Trust me.

Mother Mary won't you whisper
something but what's past and done.

Trust me.

I want what I want.

Anyways, has anyone else heard APC's new cover of IMAGINE???
*drools*
i want my Man-yard soooo much:D
actually i just want the CD, because Man-yard would be too overwhelming for me to handle.

Hells yah, i love the new song too, Silversunset.  It's about Love, Peace, and Unity,  which is great. :)

Well today i gave my friend the link to the new song but he wasnt able to listen to it so i tried writing down the lyric as i hear it.  And since i saved it down, i might as well let you guys see the lyric. (Note: the line with the '**' next to it means it is wrong.  I cannot hear what Maynard is saying there.)

Imagine
by A Perfect Circle

Imagine there's no heaven
let's see it if you try
No hell below us
above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no country
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
No religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
I hope someday you may join us
in the world as one

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
in the world as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
**And brought a hood on them**

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
you may say i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
in the world as one

Love & Peace

Little Ninja.
the line is
"a brotherhood of man"

good try though[:D], very cute.

I've heard a bunch of people saying that re-doing Lennon is almost sacreligious (sp?) but i for one think that maynard did an excellent job. just because you like the new way doesn't mean you're abandoning Lennon...he still wrote it.

Also:
quote:
I hope someday you will join us
in the world as one

should read:

I hope some day you will join us
and the world will live as one.

Ahhhh Silversunset, it's close enough.  Noone will know the difference. I hope.[xx(]

Well thanks again for correcting me.  It is the first song ever that i tried to write it down as i hear it. Some kudos for me for trying???[:I]

Well as always, love & peace.

Edit: Replying to the sacrilegious thing. Personally, i don't think it is anything sacrilegious about rewriting a song.  I mean, come on, it's just a song!  And it's not like he's not telling people that he's redoing it, and proclaiming it as his own.  He did mentioned he will be covering for the songs of the times on his new album.

I say, let the artist do his arts and let the musician do his songs, whether by expressing it through other people song's or other means, just let the creative flow.  It would suck real bad if everything were same old same old.

One more thing: SHARE.  It's nice to share.[:)]

About the parabola and parabol video, if any one has it, watch it over and over, like I have, and there is still things in it that I am trying to get a better understanding about, for eg the 3 strange looking men at the start, the apple being cut in half and having a pentagon? Inside, that strange little guy with his face going back and forwards, the floating orbs, the black and white forest, it doesn't make much logical sense until the end, the leaf turns into a flame, the two panels on the side of the screen (look carefully) come backwards, activating the kindulini, than melting into oneness, whats your take on it?

All of the symbolism is just background information to the drama unfolding.  there are layers upon layers of symbolism but if you want to "get" anything that's esoteric look for the things that are displayed in plain sight- the parts that are EXoteric are the parts that will give you a clue to the arcane.

the dissection of the pneumatic buddy there after he died has a very very big part to play in the video- or in my interpretation of it.  Look at the emotions involved- the non verbal stuff/body language of Tricky (the tan, alien looking star of the video)

TooL is the best band EVER! My favorite. I met Maynard after a APC concert once it was one of the better moments I have come across, not only in the meeting him but the fact that  I new I was going to and it happened, like fate.. it was just another aspect that makes me feel that my life is going in a planed direction, I think everyone's life does once they come to realized and accept this.  Anyway TooL was the reason I tapped deeper into my already very spiritual nature... Once word... Third eye!
THanks for posting about them they are a true magical forse in music today.

Listening to TOOL is a big part of the reason I originally became interested in all things spiritual.

Check out the lyrics to this song.
Lateralus

Black then white are all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see.
as below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more and
beckons me to look thru to these infinite possibilities.
as below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.

I recently heard Nine inch nails, "right where it belongs", nice lyrics on that aswell:

QuoteSee the animal in it's cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all
Right where it belongs

[Chorus]
What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems
What if all the world you think you know
Is an elaborate dream
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afriad to see?

What if all the world's inside of your heart
Just creations of your own
Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
And you really are alone
You can live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the words
Are you hiding in the dreams?

Holds alot of meaning.. On one level it says that we tend to get so wrapped up in the whole social/human way of life and whats expected of us that we end up giving up alot of ourselves and our freedom... we tend to cage up our personalities and filter it out in order not to upset too many people. We've nearly all felt the hollowness, right?

Anyways, I dont think true freedom can be found on earth as a human, only in dreams and AP's etc.
