Title: ECT to facilitate OBE experiences?
Post by: eric_l_lewis on January 27, 2014, 08:18:54
Electrically stimulating the angular gyrus on right side of the brain is supposed to produce OBEs. (I guess the stun gun I used a while back didn't have enuf voltage or something). So if one were to get electroconvulsive therapy due to something like severe depression, would it stimulate or at least facilitate an OBE? :-o

I guess it would depend on how much voltage that it would take to have an o.b.e. It sounds like the hard way to go out of body . I am not sure its really a good idea to zap your brain like that .

Electrocranial stimulation is a technique done in a controlled setting- it's not the same as using a stun gun on yourself. So don't.

For what I've read and remember about these experiments in descriptions one can assume it is not a 'genuine' OBE. It just showed strange changes of perception (like you see your arms become smaller etc.) or induced trance states. The scientist who did this of course assumed or pretended this is OBE but it cannot compared to a full-fledged OBE let alone an AP (exit into other astral planes) at all.

Yes!  I almost said this but then it would have meant I had to do research to back it up.  I'm glad you did.

I guess it is also a matter of priorities and perspective. Why risk injuring yourself terribly for something that is of no benefit to you in that situation? For instance, if you had to work a job because your really needed to pay off your car, would you choose drag racing?

can't be bothered ... :-D

no, really, I've read this a long time ago, I think IIRC it's the Persinger dude or s.o. 'like him', but that would mean I would have to read again an article by reductionist 'sciencists' and I don't want that (I've meanwhile become a little allergic to it   )
