Let me just start by saying: That I am 19, and work for a Major company. We specialize in FIREWALLS and things like that. I cant really go into much detail because I am contracted to keep silent.
Buuuuut, we as a company are required by the government to give them ALL of EVERY CUSTOMERS INFO that buys a firewall. They have whats call the "Prohibited Parties Listing" its a database we enter the customer info into, then it comes back saying weither or not we can give that customer tech support, or other firewalls, or things along those lines. The company I work for will fine me 10,000.00 for not entering a Customers info, so you can imagine how important it is to them.
I am not sure how it detirmines which people are ok and which are not, but if you have ever bought a NIC, or a Firewall, or anything along those lines. Chances are you are in that database.
I think that the Government can and does monitor just about everything that goes on, not just on the internet either.
I would like to go into some of these things more.... but I have bills to pay and dont really want to be fired.

I think you are quite probably right Aries, however I don't necessarily agree or disagree with the policy.  There are pluses and minuses on both sides of the issue.

One thing I would like to mention, having both been in the military and worked for the Govmnt, is that people assume a very mistaken notion about Govmnt, and what it is all about.

People think Govmnt is there to serve the people, to make sure the country is defended, roads are kept repaired, and crooks are put behind bars, etc..  In other words, people think of the Govmnt as a big benign protector of sorts.

This is far from the truth, and central to this truth, if you think about it, is the adament belief by Govmnt that people are not responsible for themselves, thus must be protected from themselves.

That is why your freedoms are curtailed in the name of public interest.

Unfortunately, many people ARE NOT responsible for themselves.  This, unfortunately, is what makes Govmnt such a necessary evil, and all around pain in the butt for everybody, including those honest people who are responsible for themselves.

Sometimes the Govmnt loses perspective, and starts to take it's role of public protector too seriously, by the above logic, such as in the current administration.  Frankly I'm convinced the founding fathers are spinning in their graves at some of the constitutional atrocities committed by these lunkheads.

Ah well.  Here's hoping for a regime change in the coming election!!!

Aries, I don't see how the government knowing that I own a firewall helps them or hurts me.  Can they blast through my firewall?  Probably.  Can they do it without me figuring out that an intrusion happened?  Probably not.

I'm certain that the government already knows all about me, and has plenty on info on me.  I'm a strong proponent of strong cryptography (something the intelligence agencies dislike), I own guns (the ATF database), I'm a republican, have posted for years on anti-snooping pro-privacy quasi-hacking (and black hat cracking and spoofing) forums, and I've visited the doctor using an insurance card (lots of medical info in databases).  So without a doubt I'm in the government databases. However to date I've yet to get a nasty letter from the government, or a job offer, or a veiled threat.

And *even if* I did somehow rate interest to them, and they took the trouble to blast through my router and software firewalls, what would they find?  A lot of MP3s (the government couldn't care less), a lot of programming tools, and (gasp) my dream journals.  That's certainly enough to risk a Watergate-style scandel over.

I have to end this now as my doorbell is ringing.  And what is that black helicopter doing outside?  Hey!!  Whadsa da eas e342sssssssssssss

I dont know what they do with that info, nor do I care. I was just making a point about what the Government can, and will do.
If they have all the major computer manufacturing companys working with them, then its perfectly reasonable to assume that they have spyware, and other things built into programs.

Hi everyone I am  fairly new to this forum but have noticed something very unusually.  Not sure if any of the other experienced travellers noticed also but there appears to be some eves dropping taking place from someone or some secret agency outside this forum. Not quite sure exactly who but i know they are listening and keeping close tabs on everything being said and by whoom.  If anyone else notices the same please let us know.
