Title: Hypnagogic State
Post by: Danny1993 on April 11, 2011, 13:50:44
Hey Everyone

I find it hard to reach the hypnagogic state and could do with some decent techniques. I've being tying the Breathing technique but i can't do with it. Any more Ideas?

I'm surprised no one has responded to this; the hypnagogic state is wonderful, and with practice, reachable in a few minutes. I posted something on another forum; I will re-post, and elaborate.

"If you wish to try WILD, then it helps to have an empty mind and induce what I call "Mind static" which is allowing your mind to let loose a free flow of voices, phrases, and noises. Don't control them, and don't try to understand them. If it is hard to make this flow come naturally, you can give it a little push; think of phrases you heard earlier in the day, and let them come to your mind quickly or slowly, but don't focus too hard. Combine sentences, phrases, and sounds.

As this mind static increases, you will find yourself in an immediate trance state, possibly sitting interacting with hypnagogic imagery for a while before you know it. This is the best way I have found, and the key is to remain aware."

So, mind static. Using your powers of internal dialogue to your benefit. Seeing as most people are ruled by their internal dialogue, they will be no stranger to talking to themselves. Well, do this, but overload it. Don't control it, just start talking. Start with one stream of nonsense dialogue; "The weather is getting colder; I like the cheese at that one restaurant; The computer was hot" Babble. Then start another, along side that stream. The sentences will soon be made not by your conscious control, but you will have entered mind static. They will be surreal, make no sense, and probably have little grammar rules. For example:

"Shadow talks-fly-does the wall-fresh air-into-this all go-if it-" and so on and so forth. Go deeper. Add more streams, and add noises. I find bird calls fit in fantastically. Soon you will have thrown yourself into a bizarre, surreal trance. Make sure to keep awareness though. While in this flow, you can zip into hypnagogic imagery before you know it.

I did this the other night, and I was in mind static, and all of a sudden, I asked myself; "Where am I" I had pushed myself from the static, right into a vision, and was standing next to a girl in a book store.

Hope this helps.

There are loads of techniques to achieve trance in the techs section.  Hypnagogia can happen in any state of trance, so just go with that.

Dazino,
We call that "Phasing".  :)

I gotcha, Xanth; I read your useful phasing primer. However, I don't believe that WILD are full on astral projections; I believe that the dream state is different from astral projections, and that the hypnagogic state is different from visualization.

I didn't notice anything about using internal dialogue in your primer though. So I wouldn't call this phasing, because it is not intended to enter an astral projection, it is simply a way to enter trance.

I could be misinterpreting something; if I am, let me know.

Well, phasing only denotes the smooth shift of your consciousness from one reality frame to another.
In essence you're "here" (this reality frame) then you shift and you're "there" (a different reality frame).
The difference between "Phasing" and "plainly falling asleep" is that for phasing you remain consciously aware during the shift.  That's all.

As for "how" you work it to achieve that shift is secondary to the definition of "Phasing".

In any case, how you go about your non-physical experiences isn't important.  What is important is that you just have those experiences.

The "internal dialogue" you speak of is simply something you use to keep your mind focused and active.  It's the same idea as just about every other method, technique or exercise.  One that is very similar is the "Mental Rundown" that Frank taught here on the Astral Pulse.  It focuses your mind, keeps it active and allows your consciousness to move within.

As for Trance, it's the first step to opening yourself up to more than just astral projection.  :)

Sorry, I kind of went off on a few different tangents there.  >_<  LoL

Ok, I kind of get it; phasing is a shift from one consciousness to another. I understand the reality frames concepts, I just use different terminology, so I may have been confused at first.

So mind static is just my favorite way of phasing? I kind of like having a descriptive word to lump my techniques into, it tightens a lot of concepts, and makes it easier to organize.

Thank you for clearing things up. ^ ^

When I close my eyes and let go, I don't get what you call mind static Dazino, or the visuals that people usually refer to when talking about phasing.  I just get concept static, the same kind of confused illogical jumble of stuff but it's not particularly audio or video.  I usually try to quiet that though because I thought it was counterproductive.  I'll try just going with it and see what happens.
