Science says most (or all?) atoms in a Human body are replaced by atoms from food you eat about every 7 years. I dont know much about it.
How much (if any) of brains are replaced?
What parts (if any) of Human bodies are not replaced?
If most of the atoms in my body arent the same atoms my body was made of years ago, then I can remember being in 2 or more bodies. Not much different from reincarnation. Its like I reincarnated in this body (from the body made of the old atoms) so slowly I didnt notice. It implies weird things about the connection between occupants of different bodies in the same time.
What would happen if there were 2 people with the same number of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen etc atoms in their bodies, and 1 atom at a time, you switched the same type of atom in one person's body with the other. Your body would now be made of all the atoms from the other, and their new body would contain all the atoms from your old body. As much as you could tell from the shape and type of atoms, each body would be the same as it was before, but which soul goes to which body?
After every single-atom switch, each person will confidently say they are the same person. Eventually they will have none of their original atoms left, and will say the same. Maybe the 2 souls would share both the bodies, which would imply the same for any soul that has ever used these atoms... weird
But this doesnt imply the god-is-everything theory that many believe. One soul does not have to equal an other soul to use the same atoms, and they dont have to use the same atoms. They could each stick with their own atoms, even when they're in 2 separate bodies. But it does add confusion to the boundary between one soul and an other, added to the facts of telepathy, telekinesis, and other things that seem to connect things that you wouldnt think would be connected.
Here's another good one: if you can use molecular nanotechnology and computers based on it to gradually study and replace every neuron in your body with a computer and software, at the end of the process are you still alive?
If you trade all your atoms with an other body and you're still alive, trading them one at a time for silicon etc, while preserving the behavior of the body, should be the same.
There are no parts of the body which are not replaced every 7 years entirely. Most of your organs are completely replaced much more often than that, especially your skin and stomach. I'll go farther than that by saying that you are not the same person from moment to moment, but instead you are constantly re-creating yourself.
Why are you sure all atoms in the brain get replaced?
That is the most important organ to this question.
Here is a web site with quotations:
http://www-users.rwth-aachen.de/gunter.heim/ENGLjedi/literature/norretranders.htm
Richard Feynman on consciousness, page 326:
In 1955, the American physicist Richard Feynman put it thus: "The atoms that are in the brain are being replaced; the ones that were there before have gone away. So what is this mind of ours: what are these atoms whith consciousness? Last week's potatoes! They now can remember what was going on in my mind a year ago."
I'd like to add some context to that Feynman quote, if I may. He is not asserting the notion that the entire brain is replacing its atoms. Rather, he's talking about how to interpret seemingly narrow work on the phosphorous contents of rats brains. He's talking about looking for the beauty of science and to be captivated by its potential discoveries.
In 1955, there was no knowledge that cells turned over
at all in the human brain. He was trying to motivate the crowd and to motivate students. There's only recently been research that shows the hippocampus turns over, and some areas of the neo-cortex in birds and monkeys.
Quote... you have to know how to read the music. For instance, the scientific article may say, "The radioactive phosphorus content of the cerebrum of the rat decreases to one-half in a period of two weeks." Now what does that mean?
It means that phosphorus that is in the brain of a rat -- and also in mine, and yours -- is not the same phosphorus as it was two weeks ago. It means the atoms that are in the brain are being replaced: the ones that were there before have gone away.
So what is this mind of ours: what are these atoms with consciousness? Last week's potatoes! They now can remember what was going on in my mind a year ago -- a mind which has long ago been replaced.
To note that the thing I call my individuality is only a pattern or dance, that is what it means when one discovers how long it takes for the atoms of the brain to be replaced by other atoms. The atoms come into my brain, dance a dance, and then go out -- there are always new atoms, but always doing the same dance, remembering what the dance was yesterday.
When we read about this in the newspaper, it says "Scientists say this discovery may have importance in the search for a cure for cancer." The paper is only interested in the use of the idea, not the idea itself. Hardly anyone can understand the importance of an idea, it is so remarkable. Except that, possibly, some children catch on. And when a child catches on to an idea like that, we have a scientist. It is too late for them to get the spirit when they are in our universities [* I would now say, "It is late -- although not too late -- form them to get the spirit..."], so we must attempt to explain these ideas to children.

I'll still say that the glucose atoms are constantly being replaced along with the oxygen which burns it. The processes of life involve constant change. It was just that that was the only thing I could find on short notice.
If a powerful psychic dies and I eat them, do I gain their powers?
Of course not. You'd be in trouble if that was the case. I bet you eat meat. Moo.
theoretically if i was a cannibal  would i gain some of the powers of the psychic that I ate?
If the theoretical psychic didn't see it coming, there wouldn't be much power or ability there for you to gain in the process.
I'd be more concerned about eating cows and chickens and what you might be getting from them.
Why does it matter if they see it coming? Power doesnt exist then leave instantly. It usually stays for months.
cows and chickens... Yes. Probably better to eat humans.
What kind of a psychic would cooperate with being killed and eaten? A psychic who didn't know in advance of the danger of being eaten is probably not very powerful anyway. A psychic who could see it coming in advance would be likely to find somewhere else to be when the time comes.
beavis, the answer is clear. You would have to eat their psychic body.
If they're powerful and try to avoid me, there are still physical things that could stop them, like a snake biting them or police, or maybe I'm more powerful and want to consume their lesser powers anyways. Theoretically if they couldnt get away, would I gain some of their powers?
Well, you would have to make sure your digestive system is healthy. Not everything is absorbed, you know. Most of their psychic power would pass through into your waste, and instead it would go to the Earth.
They would reincarnate in the great circle of life, and have the last laugh.
but would ANY of it transfer to me?
It would be better to have the psychic simply put energy into your food and drink. For that matter, you can learn to do this for yourself. Better karma for everyone involved, too.
yeah, beavis, of course.. but wouldn't the molecules be broken down and trasnmuted into constituent parts, only to be replaced by other molecules in the future?
I say you would have 1% of their psychic power over the course of a couple days, starting a day after consumption.
lol
I didnt ask cause I'd really do it. I want to learn how atoms and souls interact.
Well, maybe they don't interact.
Maybe they correlate.
then why do they correlate?
Why wouldn't they?
How would they corelate if they couldn't interact? Then again, it's not getting this thread any further by answering questions with questions.
All you can do in your life is ask more and more questions.
Nothing is really for certain.
QuoteHow would they corelate if they couldn't interact?
That's the golden question, I think. If you understood that, you would understand quantum mechanics.
That's not to immediately suggest that what we perceive as "synchronicities" operate under the same principles as quantum entanglement, but they are both observations of correlation nonetheless (albeit one is significantly more experimentally demonstrable than the other).
This thread shows again (as i saw in other threads) that scientists are finding that budhist teachings are real (of coarse they are real: they are based in direct observation of reality.
Scientis just found that the world its allways in constant mutation. There is nothing that you can say "this is always the same thing in every moment". Thats wrong: in each moment of our lives, we are changing and living diferent things and sensations.
There are more interesting things about our bodys that we never think about. For example: our cells are made of atoms and particles with 15000 0000000 years! Another thing: we are created by atoms that were part of our Sun at a long time ago. Thats nice to know: we were merged in the sun at thousands and thousand of years ago!
We were brothers (we are). We are just a bunch of atoms that think that they are an "i am". We are like a drop in an ocean: there is no drop only a big ocean.
QuoteThis thread shows again (as i saw in other threads) that scientists are finding that budhist teachings are real (of coarse they are real: they are based in direct observation of reality.
How come the majority of scientists don't agree with you? What - are they blind? Are they myopic? They must be, huh? They're at the forefront! Maybe they're too close. :)
Quoteor example: our cells are made of atoms and particles with 15000 0000000 years! Another thing: we are created by atoms that were part of our Sun at a long time ago. Thats nice to know: we were merged in the sun at thousands and thousand of years ago!
Then how come you don't remember it? Interesting question! Isn't it?
QuoteWe were brothers (we are). We are just a bunch of atoms that think that they are an "i am". We are like a drop in an ocean: there is no drop only a big ocean.
How did the ocean ever come to distinguish itself from itself? Was it intentional? An accident? Why do people persistently believe they are not part of the ocean? Did the ocean not know itself? If that is true, isn't it also true that the ocean might still not know a whole lot more about itself? If it's true the ocean mistakes itself for being separate from itself, can the ocean be mistaken about other things as well?
[Edit: And if the ocean is so great, why does the ocean make spelling mistakes?]

Anyways. I did some more searching and I found a site called Science and Consciousness Review (http://www.sci-con.org). Wow. They sure have changed in the years since I've seen them. This article says the brain might completely turn itself over every other month! Jeez.
http://www.sci-con.org/articles/20040601.html
Okay, Kaz! Tell me what this has to do with the great buddhist teachings lol.
1st question: No, scientists are not blind, just stupid because dont even try to listen to other ideas "UFOS?! WHat are you crazy? F*** u!!!" Same about Budhism, TK,etc...maybe they are stupid things but at least they should listen to it...
2-We dont remember? Why do you ask that? I didnt say that we should remember. I said that we were atoms that were part of the Sun. Any Astronomer accepts that and many of them consider that thought something important for us: to know that we are just space junk.
3- About the Ocean, its an analogy. Or you understand it or dont period. Experiment yourself budhist teaching (do not just analyse it with your mind...live it for some while) then you will understand what i said.
4. About the site you speak about: its to complex (i am not english and i am tired to read an "hard" article. What the big idea behind it? Just say that and then i will answer to you.
thanks ;)
Quote from: Kazbadan1st question: No, scientists are not blind, just stupid because dont even try to listen to other ideas
:D
I can understand the frustration. But we are what we are only because of scientists and engineers. While religions and superstitions are constantly trying to push us back to our cave-man days, its science which has made ourselves more human.
I have nothing but great respect for all the scientists, engineers and philosophers.
They are busy in making nanomachines and super medicines, which one can use. They have their families to feed, so can't take up any work which doesn't pay back. It takes a lifetime of research to even make a single discovery. It often takes 50-100 years to establish a scientific theory.
As everybody knows, UFOs and tk were thoroughly studied but never yielded any useful results. The research is going on, you'll find a lot of papers on so called 'paranormal' phenomena, studied by actual scientists. I see some rays on the horizon.
Anyway, it doesn't take any degrees to start a research. The only way you can bring these things into scientific mainstream, is to start a research yourself. Don't wait for anyone to do it for you. Imagine how backward we would have been, if all people just sat there waiting for someone to make a discovery.
Ok, on the original question, you can explain it using h/w and s/w analogy. The s/w can run with any h/w, although it interacts with h/w, a change in h/w will not change the actual function of a s/w.
The thing that matters here is not the actual identity of the atoms, but the arrangement of the atoms in a body. As long as you keep the arrangement(structure) exactly same, even if you replace all the material by a new one, it will function exactly in an identical manner.
You can also replace the carbon by silicon+supporting atoms, so that Si+supporting atoms behave exactly like a carbon atom, and still be alive and kicking. Its all about information, not about the media.
I don't understand why it is a question even. All things in the world are in a state of flux, including our minds. The mind of today is different from the mind of yesterday. The illusion of continuity is supplied by memory, which also constantly changes. Keep yourself same, just switch memories with your friend, and you are your friend.
The only constant thing in this world is change ;)
I agree with, but i just dont like their attitude. I dont ask them to reasearch anything or even to believe, but its irritating when you speak about paranormal stuff to a scientist and they, respond to you in an arrogant manner "Oh, you are crazy, there are no proof, blablabla".
I remember a TV programa here in Portugal, when some people (normal) were talking about strange ufos that they saw. There was a scientist in the program saying that the ufos couldnt be real aliens just because we cannot explain how tehy reached us. I mean, its stupid do not accept what people say just because you cannot explain it!
Its this kind of attitude that i dont like.
With exception to that, of course that scientists are useful: medicin, technology, etc, are nice things to have.
But i will not say thanks to them, because when a scientist its doing some research, he is doing that just because he loves it, just because he feels pleasure in what he does. He is not doing that for the love for humanity.
Its the same with me: when, sometimes, i am studying or experimenting something (related with science, maths, etc) i am doing that because its funny. If i discover something i will do not want any "thanks" (bu i must admit that scientists deserve at least some admiration for their job, because its needed inteligence and genius for what they do).
"You" are not the atoms, you are the soul that inhabits the physical shell. So what does it matter what atoms are what and how old they are and when they came? As long as they're there and everything is working, IMO it doesn't mater, because my belief is that the soul is either housed in the brain, or somewhere nearby outside (the crown chakra, other chakras, and subtle bodies and other similar things?) and that the brain just acts as a transciever between the soul and the physical body. So even if the brain gets damaged because it's missing atoms, your soul wont die, just that the "radio" between the soul and physical body becomes blocked.
Right. The body is a vehicle to experience this WONDERFUL
planet.
Kevin
Ok body is a vehicle and "radio", but it does have its own intelligence in the neurons. I am the atoms in my body (at least those in my brain) and a soul. The atoms typed this.
No, your soul induced the will which coerced the electricity in your body to cause the synapses to occur in the brain which caused your fingers to type the words. You are not your body. You are an energy being. If you cut off your arm and look at it, is it you, was it ever you? It's not. It's just a compilation of bone, skin, muscle. Not you. Get it?
Kevin
I could say the same about a soul. If you cut off part of your soul, was it ever you? Or can you prove souls are uncuttable?
Its a proven fact that neurons often fire because of the order of other neurons firing. Soul probably changes some of the electricity, but MOST of it is because of the physics of brains. Soul INFLUENCES brain but doesnt control all the intelligence.
Well, I believe the intelligence resides elsewhere than in the brain. Now you say cut off part of the soul? Interesting response. Until we know what type of energy comprises the soul, we would not know how to manipulate it. The body however, ask yourself what part of you is actually you? Nothing. What are you really? Your body? No. The accumulation of thoughts, memories and consciousness. The consciousness is essentially you, not the atoms, red cells, white cells; matter. What binds that matter and makes it want to comprise a body? What keeps the atoms from saying, hey, screw this guy and just leaving
This is a fascinating topic, far beyond the realm of our Earthly feeble minds to comprehend. We, as humans are so far out of the loop when it comes to this type of subject, it's not even funny. Why can't I just have my answers dammit.
As far as the soul. Perhaps another post about what the soul is comprised of as far as types of energy. Maybe there isn't a soul. Maybe I don't even exist. Maybe you don't exist. I'm going to make another post entitled, what makes you, you.
Kevin
It doesnt matter if we know how to cut off part of a soul. I said it hypothetically only to make a point... just because you can remove part of yourself doesnt mean its not part of you.
A dentist gave me a metal filling in my tooth. That piece of metal is now part of my body.
That filling is a part of "A" body which your soul resides in. Perhaps I'll explain it another way. You rent a tuxedo for a wedding and return it. Well on Earth, your soul rents a body. After you kick it, the body is gone. Now does that body constitute "YOU"? No, you still exist after the body. So was the body ever really you? I think not. Dentists are evil anyhow. Charging you top dollar for metal fillings that fall out in 5 years, then they have to drill a bigger hole, fill it again, eventually you need a root canal and a cap. Then the cap will fall off. When I go to the dentist, I just tell them if I have a cavity, remove the tooth. I am getting surgical steel implant posts with fake teeth bolted on to them. It's going to cost about 20k for all my molars, but my dentist visits will be minimal after that and no roots = no horrific Novocaine
The tooth breaks, they slap another one out the mold and bolt it in. I'm serious. I'm so done with dentists. They are absolutely useless. No better than the typical family guesser (Doctor)
I mean come on, it's 2005 and they are still filling cavities with metal? WTF?
Now look what ya done Beavis
I didnt say anything about fillings and souls together. Filling wasnt always part of body, but now it is. Body wasnt always part of me, but now it is.
One of my fillings recently fell out. I've been trying to use powers to make the tooth grow to fill in the hole, but its done nothing so far.
Yeah I hear ya man. Our views on this perhaps differ slightly, it's cool though. I always welcome a good intellectual cyber war. Screw the body anyway. Every moment it's dying. We were born to die, that's the only thing in this life that is certain  DEATH
Also, on a brighter note, you take your first breath by yourself and your last breath by yourself. Gives ya something to look forward to ha?
Remember: booze and drugs make the pain go away

Of course it has it's own intelligence, otherwise the body wouldn't be able to function......I think the intelligence that is there are two things though. One, the basic physical related stuff like motor and cognitive skill stuff. The other stuff, I think is just a smaller copy of the conscious/subconscious extension that is you, the soul, like a copy that's imported into the brain over time as you grow up and learn....like importing an html Internet favorites/bookmark file into Firefox  And you use the bookmark copy that is in the brain as a radio to the Internet that is your soul
Why wouldnt brain resist being overwritten?
I dont believe it. How does it get copied to brain? A copy cant just be similar. It has to replace whatever personality was in the brain previously... unless you admit soul only INFLUENCES brain but doesnt control it.
You don't have to believe anything. If you didn't notice, my posts have the following words in them: in my opinion, my belief, and I think. That suggests I'm sharing my belief based on a theory or personal experience. That's what I'm doing, sharing a belief based on a theory. It's a theory, you don't have to believe it, and I don't care if you do, and some of it is probably wrong anyway. I'm not trying to convince anyone or make them believe, I just wanted to share it.
How does it get copied to the brain? I never thought that deep into the theory. Maybe by some supernatural/paranormal force, like kinesis, electro/neuro-kinesis. If the supernatural forces are strong enough, let's say a soul that knows what it's doing and is the legal "owner" of the body.....who's to say that it couldn't overpower a measily physical brain if it tries to resist (asuming that's even possibe). Maybe there are other forces that we don't of yet that allows souls to take "control" of physical shells, since the one controlling it is the legal owner, or maybe they work together mutually by forces we don't know of yet, like a symbiote bond of sorts, so why would the brain resist in the first place, assuming it's a mutual symbiote relationship. Probably that's why other spirits have to usually break a person down before they can take possession, maybe the bond is blocking external control.
What is influence, but not an indirect/passive method of control? So it doesn't really mater which way, direct control or influence, because ultimately, it is control in the end.
I didnt say you were forcing me to believe anything. I only said I dont believe it.
QuoteHow does it get copied to the brain? I never thought that deep into the theory. Maybe by some supernatural/paranormal force, like kinesis, electro/neuro-kinesis. My body often notices my soul influencing my body. Its often an energy surge at the top of my nose (third eye), but only when my brain thinks certain things. My body feels like its being trained like an animal but cooperates because it wants mostly the same things... or does it want that because of years of training? I'll agree that soul has a lot of control, but only because it uses rewards of energy to train a body for years to think certain things. Its not a copy. Its partially similar thought patterns caused by being connected for a long time.
What kind of energy?
 EVIL energy
