Here is my "rough guide, England v Ireland, cities v Countryside".

Please forgive me, it is very poor; I would appreciate additional comments from other "britishers" and "Irelanders"

England - pro's (in the cities):
a) very multicultural
b) great food
c) plenty to see and do

cons :
a) people can be very abrupt
b) weather is crap (same in ireland)
c) bloody expensive

Ireland - Pro's (in the cities...which i've very briefly visited)
a) good shopping
b) lively, not loads of tourists.
c) all pubs / bars serve budweiser on tap.

cons
a) still quite expensive
b) a bit more conservative than English cities
c) dodgy restaurants ( the ones i went in were dodgy.)

....And the countryside :
england - Pro's
a) lots of nice villages in south england
b) plenty of good walking
c) good pubs

Cons :

a) City folks have a habit of heading out to the countryside at the w/end.
b) crap weather.

Ireland country side - pro's (what i've seen)
a) better walking / hiking
b) excellent fishing
c) plenty of beaches

cons:
a) always too rainy to go on the beaches.
b) signs are in Irish...

Wow, thats a nice critque. Thanks.

As for the weather, thats one of the reasons I want to get away. I love the rain and fog so the u.k sounds like heaven to me. As long as it doesn't snow enough that you have to shovel everyday.

Parmenion

If your looking for dreary weather then your going the right way.
Im from Ireland and ive allways said it would be a great country if it had a roof!!

(and a new government but thats something else alltogether)

Nerezza

Parmenion,

The only time I like the sun being out is during the spring(after the snow stops falling) After that I could go without seeing the sun most days. For me autumn doesn't feel right unless it's foggy and wet.

I'd take anything Clandestino says with a grain of salt if he thinks bud on tap is a plus- Harp lager is way better.
In the world in general and in this nation
May not even the names disease, famine, war, and suffering be heard.
May virtuous qualities, merit, and prosperity greatly increase
And may continuous good fortune and subline well-being perfectly arise.

Parmenion

HMMM...cant say as i agree with that!

clandestino

Ralphm, its funny how when a brand of beer crosses the Atlantic, it tastes better !!!

give me a Budweiser over a harp any day !

Budweiser on tap is ok, better than bottled. However if you want a real drink try some proper beer, such as greene king or newcastle brown ale.

You can't talk about Ireland without mentioning the Black Stuff! The only thing worth drinking!

England is nice, Ireland is rugged and wild and Celtic and beautiful. It is harder to be alone in England. Depends what you want really!

Greetings!

The Isle of Man is like all of these places rolled into one convenient sized area [:)]

I no longer drink alcohol, but as you are mentioning it - has anyone tried "Theakstons Old Peculiar"?

With best regards,

Adrian.

Most likely I will be stopping in the isle of man for a few days at least. My mother wants me to pick up bee gees souvenairs [:O]

Im thinking I'll spend most of the time in Ireland working, and than spend the last month in England. I've wanted to see England ever since I was very young so I have to take the opportunity.

One question. Is there a ferry or boat that will take me from Ireland to the isle of man, and than to England?

FightingFat

There is definitely a ferry from Belfast to Heysham that sails via the Isle of Man, you can check out the details here http://www.irishferries.com/

I can't comment on Ireland - I went to Dublin once and nearly threw myself into the river Liffey... I'd run out of money and had to sleep outside the train station.

Ferrys - make sure you get one of those fast ones on two legs (are they called catamarans) because they are fast and warm.  The traditional ferry types take bloody ages and are freezing cold with no place to sit!

Old Peculiar!!!  A blast from the past.  I used to drink the stuff years ago - it puts wire-wool on the chest.

Nerezza

Thanks FightingRat. I bookmarked that site so I can use it to plan the trip.

Terrance, how long does it take usually to make it from Ireland to England on a ferry?

terrance

I can't really remember.
London to Dublin via bus, ferry and bus took 12hrs.
I think the slow ferry out took about 3hrs.  The fast one back was just over an hour... i think.

Your best bet would be to fly i think.  You can pick up some pretty cheap deals at the moment.

I've noticed that alot of people on this forum come from the u.k or area's nearby. Im planning to move to Ireland or England for about a year, next year. Im trying to decided so I can start making plans. Anyway, for those who live there or have been there, what are the pros and cons.

Strange question but i've never been more than a hundred miles from where I was born so living overseas is something i'd rather not rush into.
