A Way Out of Automated Phone Hell

Why not just get rid of the darn automated phone systems?
Isn't this just curing a disease with another? First install a system that bugs people and then install another system to detect when the first system bugs people.

I can just imagine how badly that system works.

A couple of years ago Australia's directory assistance service went over to a voice recognition system. The really amusing thing is that the system can never seem to understand anything you say unless you speak to it using an american accent.

Automated phone systems dont have to suck. They are a good way to divide calls into categories. The problem they usually have is they give too many damn instructions.

"To give a complaint to our complaint department, please press 3. To recieve an rma number for your return, please press 4."

...should be...

"complaints 3, returns 4"
