"Now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
- Voltair on his deathbed in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan

I don't know whether those were his actual last words, or that he said them at all, since history has a way of obscuring these things, but i figured it fits here anyway.

quote:
Friends applaud, the comedy is finished.
~~ Ludwig van Beethoven, composer, d. March 26, 1827

There's some interesting info behind this. From the handful of people were with Beethoven when he died, so many different versions of what his last words were have came out. This was one , but there was also "I shall hear in heaven", "I feel as if up to now I had written no more than a few notes", "Pity, Pity - too late!" (this being in response to wine that was brought to him), "Is it not true, Hummel, that I have some talent after all?" (Hummel being a 'rival' composer), and "There, do you hear the bell? Don't you hear it ringing? The curtain must drop. Yes! My curtain is falling."

In a biography I've read (by Schauffler), it's stated that Beethoven's last words were in reality likely to have been regarding a feud that existed between him and another musician (I can't really remember who, but possibly a member of a string quartet that Beethoven had had earlier troubles with), and the words supposedly weren't exactly good-natured. But who would want to record words like that as Beethoven's last words? It was also said though that right before Beethoven died, he awoke from the delirium or sleep he was previously in and sat up in his bed, clenching his bed covers before laying back and then reportedly dying. I think that's more characteristic of him than probably any of the reported last words. He fought everything life threw at him, and was only finally taken by death, which was probably the end of decades of bad health caused by lead poisoning ( http://www.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/10/17/beethoven.hair/ ).

Interesting stuff. Last words are always fun to read. [:D]

"Ah well I suppose it has come to this... Such is life"
Ned Kelly, Bushranger, Hanged Nov 11 1880

The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly funded a project with the U.S. auto makers for the past five years, whereby the auto makers were installing black box voice recorders in pick-up trucks.

This was done in an effort to determine, when accidents occurred, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of crashes were, "Oh, Sh**!"

Only the state of Montana was different, where 89.3 percent of the final words were: "Hold my beer and watch this!"

"I am the wind, the free wind" Kagura, Inuyasha

"I will not die.  Kagura, unlike her, I am a true being!" Hakudoushi before being swallowed by the Kazzana, Inuyasha

"Goodbye my shadow, you who stood at the end of the path I did not choose, I wanted my own world, so I don't have any regrets, I will continue to choose this path."  Mithos, Tales of Symphonia

"This is the END!"  Bankotsu, right before Inuyasha cut him in half.

Heh, I guess I just like Inuyasha too much and we had Tales of Phantasia so I had to do ToS also.

Does anyone know any very famous peoples last words, or famous last words. I have some; dont take me for freak who plays with the dead. I just find the character of a person is at its highest just before they die. And if that doesnt make sense, well im 13.

"Don't worry, it's not loaded." - Terry Kath, died when playing Russian roulette
"I'm Still Alive!" - Gaius Caligula, Roman Emperor with a knife in the back
"What dost thou fear?  Strike, man, strike!" - Sir Walter Raleigh, beheaded
"I have a terrible headache." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt
