Title: Lots O' Spam
Post by: Xanth on December 02, 2012, 11:40:08
My apologies for the rather large spam attack we received earlier today.
I apologize for any inconveniences... it's been dealt with.  :)

Some one must be paying these people to make these "spam " posts .  There was a spam post on a 9 year old thread , I guess they were thinking it might not get erassed .   The post was on fancy boots . I am sure there are shoe and boot forums where this kind of post would be welcome .  desert rat

I'll never grasp what's going on in the mind of advertisement spammers.

Like i say i am now a vegi, but used to love spam, only one way to eat it though, place in baking tray straight from can, had potatoes and veg and plenty of gravey, place in oven for 1hr, then slice like a joint of meat, only way to eat spam.

STILL BEST TO BE A VEGI, BUT I DO MISS CERTAIN THINGS :-P

We seem to have been targeted and still unfortunately are, by some kind of automatic spammer that uses multiple names and spams movie advertising. We ban the member every day and remove the spam, but it seems to be a daily occurrence now. All we can do is remove it and ban that member upon seeing it.

I am sorry for any inconvenience this cause anyone here. We are doing our best to rectify the problem.

You're doing a fine job guys. It's target practice for you.
We can have a laugh,  and hope the quirky comments get deleted too.

Oh this particular one was the absolute worst I've seen since my time here on the Pulse.
He had racked up 86 spam posts in total!  LoL

I've reported another within the last hour too. The infection is spreading.
Its a pity its not easy to add a simple routine to the enlistment protocol.  That human feedback scenario is difficult to automate.

The one I saw was a post with some fancy boots , but a lot of the post had errors ,  it was coppied and had mistakes .  Who ever is doing this does not know much on computers and posting .  Who ever is paying people to make these posts should ask for there money back .  desert rat

To Lionheart/Sunshaker , you could swap that big watch for a short wave radio .  Radio station wwv broadcasts a time signal .  2.5 , 5 , 10 , 15 Mhz ect.  http://www.nist.gov/pml/div688/grp40/wwv.cfm    I think chu ( a Canada time station ) is also still on the air .     desert rat

Spammers are people too http://www.people.com/people/ (http://www.people.com/people/). They are just trying http://www.coca-cola.com/en/index.html (http://www.coca-cola.com/en/index.html) to make their dollar go further, and live the http://www.nasdaq.com/ (http://www.nasdaq.com/) good lifestyle.

And yes, there is still a ton of spam. I delete it when I see it, and I know Lionheart gets a ton of it when he is on in the morning, lol.

The sad thing is that there are people who click on these spam links. They wouldn't exist if they didn't work. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go subscribe to People magazine and invest in Coca-Cola.

Once again I feel the need to apologize for the spam that is constantly bombarding the Astral Pulse!  :-(

We have been targeted by many spam-bots and try to do our best to remove them as quickly as possible.

But unfortunately we can't be on this forum 24/7, we need some time to sleep too, lol!

Members here don't really need to post on these spam site threads though. As soon as one of the Moderators logs on the spam will promply be removed!

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you!

Thank You!  :-)

Thank You for the link Desert-rat, I shall bring it up to Adrian and David and the other Moderators here.

According to their site though, it's not fool proof though and can irritate new members who accidently get passed over.

Another site has a " common post area " open to non members .  Prospective members can post there and if the site owner likes what they have posted will acecpt them .    The spam does not bother me , but I can see where it is a problem for the site .  desert rat

I just wanted to update everyone here on the current situation.

As you can see the spammers are attacking with full force. We also have been attacked with a DDOS attack, which slows the system down greatly. So slow, that you may not be able to log on at times.

I just wanted to Thank You all for your patience and to say that we are trying currently working on rectifying this problem.

Just know though, that when one of the Moderators logs on, we immediately begin to remove the spam posts from this Forum.

But on a day like today when there was over 30 of them, it takes a while to achieve this.

Once again, Thank You for your patience!  :-)

You are doing a great job getting rid of the spam.  I do not read the spam.  I ignore it so they are wasting their time.  If everyone ignores it, they might get tired of it so the spam may stop.

Sadly, we found out recently that they don't actually post it for it to get read.
They post it so that their "name" gets out there more and they get a higher google index #... the higher your index #, the closer to the top your searches appear for people when they google search you.  >_<

I thought they were trying to make money from the spam posts .  Not really spam , but I remember an electronics forum that an automatic add would be posted on a thread , as I remember , for an electronics school, some parts places , ect. I guess it provided money to keep the forum up .

It's very likely that there is a "company" selling "link packages" to webmasters. They pay the company to get their website backlinks. The website owners probably don't know that their links are being spammed. The "company" probably has this website marked as one of their routine placed to put links, which is why it keeps happening.

Another forum that is getting hit worse that hear is http://www.paranormalforums.net/   , you need to be a member to read it tho. These look like different spam links . The ones that I have scene in the past few days there are porn sites , and alwayse the pharm drugs . ( viraga , ect.)

What they (and the Pulse) need is a good black list checker.
I put one on my forums last week and my spammers were reduced by, literally, 99.9%.

Unless they use a program to alter there i.s.p. number you could block there i.s.p. number .
Title: Re: Lots O' Spam
Post by: Stillwater on April 03, 2013, 17:24:44
Yes, they do alter their IP's... it is pretty standard for their lot. In fact, we have seen the same spammer use over a dozen IP's.
Title: Re: Lots O' Spam
Post by: Xanth on April 03, 2013, 22:47:09
Yeah, there's no "blocking" anyone who is banned from the site.  All they need to do is get a proxy and adjust it.  It's really simple really.

Adrian, who is the only "admin", would have to install/setup something, and he's a very busy man these days.

I've noticed it still horrible when it comes to the spam on this site in the last few days. I've not even reported it to the mods recently because there is just so much I fear I might overwhelm the moderator team's in-boxes.  Lol, maybe if we all post more and more int he way of useful topics, at least the spam would kind of be overlooked to a small degree?
Title: Re: Lots O' Spam

Not really spam , but we had Buck_hornda .  A person making  very strange statements . That one of the mods was going to the 4 th dem. in a black hood , doing evil and some how making money doing this . As I think on this , this person either has mental problems , or they are on drugs .
Title: Re: Lots O' Spam
Post by: Xanth on April 07, 2013, 11:00:47
Buck is just a troubled individual.
Suffice to say Adrian has been and is still dealing with the issues.

The spam has been greatly reduced, but as everyone can see it hasn't gone away yet.  The individual who began this, will be dealt with permanently one way or another.

But yeah, it's probably not a good idea to continue with the "report to moderator"... one of us will check the site every so often and remove all the spam we see.  :)
Thanks for the concern guys.  Just keep sending your good intent and energy to Adrian to give him the energy to fight this crap.
