If we had replicators to replicate food and clothing like on star trek
overnight we could solve the food crisis as the world only has like 10 years of food left

but imagine how many people would loose there job
no more farms or supermarkets or clothes shops
the loss in earnings would be in the trillions

if you could invent the device that turned the electron into consumables do you think our world could afford to let you live
if you was in government what would you do with all the unemployed

I don't think mankind can afford to get it right

If there was a machine that provided all we needed... who needs a job?

In Star Trek, replicators ended poverty.
People were able to focus more on themselves and making their lives better instead of worrying about just surviving.
The point of it being that instead of just "Living" you could dedicate yourself to improving *you*.

I'm sure though that there would be an entire class of "lazy" people... some people would just enjoy doing nothing if given the chance.  :)

Or we could wind up with Stargate replicators.

That wouldn't be so good.
be awesome.

A portable energy to matter conversion unit (replicator) would change the world forever. Not only does it replicate food but it can replicate 'anything' that can fit in the device and the be copied. It wouldn't take long until computer / electrical engineers disected it and made it capable of replicating any type of matter (not just food). Gold coins, diamonds, bundles of cash...  :-D

I believe that the next BIG 'inventions' to come out in the next 50 years will be Free Energy technology, Anti-gravity, Holographic imaging technology, Interstellar space/dimensional travel, Time travel, and then finally energy to matter replication and transport (Stargates). I'll be leading the way in the space/dimensional travel department with my Multi-million dollar corporation 'Mind Based Tech'.

There is actually a very interesting project similar to this called "The Venus Project". It's about making everything automated and almost noone will need to work. And money will disappear since robots do everything for free.

Nothing about replication really but since you were talking about free food and no jobs...

I wonder about a statement like that.
Mostly because every "advancement" that has come along that was supposedly created to make our lives easier and to reduce the amount of work we do has only ever done the opposite.

People are working harder and longer now than ever before...

I'm still waiting for that "cloned meat" to come out on the shelves. Finally, the brutality will end (along with my anemia, yahoo!  ).  :-)

Dear Valkry,

have you ever tried those (remotely translated) soy proteine products? They come dried and then you boil them up until they take on the texture as of well sized pieces of ground meat. I and some culinary companies use them to make vegetarian bolognese and one can not tell the difference to actual ground meat except of course nothing was killed.

My grocery store also sells several varities of soy based, readied meat-imitiations such as: soy based gyros, soy based stake and soy based sausages, all flavored and textured like their respective role models.

I won't argue that the methods are inappropriate and the chemicals put in western food makes it horrible for us (not to mention bland).  But killing an animal in the proper frame of mind/will is a whole different picture.  When there is respect and admiration given, and permission is requested animals willingly give their life to further the cycle of life.  My spirit guide, Lola, told me all about how animals feel concerning how they're treated here.  If people would just see animals as integral parts of physical existence on Earth, and give them respect for giving their body for the continuation of our life things wouldn't be so bad round here.  Lola taught me how to ask animals and plants for permission to use their flesh for my sustenance.  She even said that if you come to a plant in the proper will/mind and tell it of your ailment that it can change its molecular structure so that you can harvest it and it will cure your problem.  It will change for you so that it can heal you if you ask it.
be awesome.

You know, I posted something awhile back about how technology could solve all of our problems if we would simply switch from capitalism to technoism. I even offered an outline of a viable process for that to happen. Most of the responses I got were pessimistic though.
