I wish I could!  I have an annoying medical condition that prevents me from doing martial arts--I loved Aikido, but couldn't keep it up.  I just started Tai Chi in hopes that I could do that at least, and so far it's going really well.

What's wing chun?  And free lessons are a bonus, good for you :)

Rastus

I haven't actively practiced in 5 years.  Before that, ohhhhh, maybe 15 years?  I had a defense that was like a brick wall, but only a so-so offense.  I'm pondering going back at it, since I'm Much more metaphysically attuned now than I used to be.
There is a physical limitation upon how much light a human body can sustain. Interestingly, there is no limit on how much light a human vessel can generate. When fully enlightened you must instill your light in order to maintain its wisdom.

Hey!
Aye! Love martial arts. Done some judo - kinda cool, jeet kune do - great fun, and a bit of aikido over the last year - also great fun, without the extremely painful harsh exercise regime of the former two!! And before all this, well, even since I was very ickle I have had a love of practicing kicks and stuff.
Been trying to put energy stuff into the aikido, luckily the teachers are proficient in this, but it aint easy!!
Oh yeah, bought some weapons recently too - sai, bokkens, but my favourites are definately nunchaku!!!
aaahhh martial arts.....sweet.....how you find wing chun then? We did some of that in jeet kune do, very close isn't it? Bit weird and flappy [:P]

what is your experience with weapon use in "do" arts?  i'm wondering what the contrast is between the two Japanese schools of thought (do and jitsu)
as below, so above

Rob

In JKD we practiced mainly with nunchaks, learning the various motions and forms, but didn't get far back then. I had my old bokken too (broken now [:(] but got 2 new instead [8D]) and he showed me the first samurai form. But like I said we didn't do much and, as is the way with jeet kune do, we learned mainly what was thought to work well.
In aikido me and a friend asked to be shown some sword fighting at the end of the session and the what the teacher showed us seemed rediculously simple. Just dropping the sword on your opponents head while stepping aside to miss their strike - then he said that that was 3 months work! Crazy. So I'm guessing its a lot of form work, essentially. Apart from that I've been shown knives in all the martial arts I've done, which were used more like props (eg how to avoid) and straight slashing in JKD. But I certainly aint no expert...
Have you trained with weapons in the jitsu school?? - if so, sound different...?
As for the differce in the two schools of though I got nooo idea!

I don't know much about jeet kune do, but wing chun is mostly about self-defense.  It's mainly close combat, and taking advantage of the opponent by counter attacking.

Weird and flappy lol I wouldn't say that, it's very efficient.

Hopefully my master will teach my qi-gong later down the road.  I've heard many good things about it.

there was a big nationalist thing going on in japan in the early 1900's.  a lot of old combat arts were redesigned (and toned down) as a means to discipline the japanese public.  anything that you normally see ending in "do" is part of that revolution.  "do" roughly translates to "way" or path.  jitsu is primarily based on direct combat (trench warfare) and, as a rule, does not usually have forms or other predesigned templates for combat, such as aikido.  yes, there is (are?) weapons practice in jitsu arts.

Whay does everyone assume all Martial arts are Asian?

Maybe because of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee.

martial arts rocks! i've been doing tae kwon do for over a year now, and im not too bad. actualy a couple days ago i got my bluestripe belt [^] i think any martial art is a great practice, and if you turn it into a way of life it's even better.. none are neccisarily better but i think aikido is the most evolved philisophicly, all i've done is read books on it but the founder was a very very interesting person, and makes bruce lee look like a white belt. anyways i'll stop my babbaling[|)]

I personally believe Ueshiba managed to achieve a supernatural level of enlightenment.  Both him and Bruce Lee put themselves through incredibly hard physical discipline to get to such a high level, it's a tragedy that Bruce Lee died so young.

That's the karate I used to do. At least I think it is. Hypnotist, do you know of sensei Takahashi?
I started karate when I was 8 years old and attained 1st kui (brown belt) by the time I was 12. Not long after I (regretfully) took a long break from it, and returned just for a few months when I was 16.

That was a long time ago, but I'm now doing some serious thinking about starting up some form of martial arts again. Well, I've actually been thinking about it for ages but I keep putting it off (Damn procrastination... I exorcise thee! [}:)][:P]).

Anyone here had experience with ninjitsu (ninjutsu?)? I'm thinking that might be cool to start up.

Rastus

You want fun?  How about full contact teams.  Maybe 1000 on each side.  Don't knock it until you try it.  But it definately sucks to be Samuri out there, 1 sword or 2 just isn't enough [:P]

martial arts are great

Im a blackbelt at judo , and I've taken some kung-fu

the one thing with western interpretations of martial arts however, is the stance that they are purely a sport

not true, martial arts are a way of life.  I know prefer the "soft" styles of martial arts  IE tai chi,  kung-fu white tiger, or chi-gong.

the hard stuff is great too, but must be balanced or your body will be angry at you, and start to get all stiff and sore.

at my university there are a group of kung-fu students of whom enjoy taking cinder blocks out to a crowded area, like say in front of a rowdy bar, or in the middle of a mall,

they then proceed to throw the cinder blocks at eachother, or break them off of each others back, knee, or shin,.   The looks the crowd gives them is worth a million dollars

especially when they play "skits" like having three "gangsters" Jump a "nerd" and the nerd then proceed to kick royal a**, quite amusing.
opinions are like kittens, just give 'em away

I've always thought Martial Arts were interesting in the fact that such control is needed..well, atleast I think.[:P]

Funny that this topic came up, because I was at the grocery store the other night with my daughter after cheerleading practice, and we saw a family all decked out in their outfits.  The Mom, Dad, and two young children, oh..I'd say ages 5 and 8.  It was too cute, and made me think...what a fantasic thing to do with your children!!

Ok..sorry, I was having a MOM moment and had to share..[:I]

martial arts is a great way to instill a genuine sense of discipline in a child, provided that they have a good teacher.  and yeah, the cinder blocks... there are some amazing things that you can do with martial arts if you want to take it that .. deep.  i have never been a witness to any of the superhuman feats, though.  pity

I did about 6 months of Go-Kan-Ryu Karate and I've just started Wing Chun Kung Fu up recently... but due to sickness, school and laziness ive only had one months training.... i hope to get back in to it as soon as possible.

GKR is good for simply fighting, self defence and tournament style stuff but i got kinda bored with the whole block, punch, kick, block ect.
Whereas Wing Chun has so much more culture and tradition to it. It's definatly an art form.

Because i havnt been getting much training in ive developed my own training aids at home which have proven to be quite effective.

Hey guys,

How many of y'all practice martial arts?  I just had my first "wing chun" lesson on saturday.  My master is a family friend so of course, he's giving me free lessons [:)].

For those who haven't tried martial arts, I highly suggest it, even though I have only one lesson under my belt, I feel more educated and grounded.
