Title: metaphysical elements in video games mega list
Post by: astralnaut on March 18, 2010, 12:19:14
i know of some video games that have spiritual, psychic, dreamstuff, and even astral projection! here is how the list works: when you list a game title, you also list the metaphysical elements in the game-for examples i have a list to start us off:
Monster Lab-in the arcanium you can make monster arms by projecting thru an astral rift and flying thru circles.
Nights into Dreams-all about flying in dreams-the whole game
Little Nemo the Dream Master-like Nights but you can't fly for some strange reason :?
Quick Yoga Training-all about this mystical exercise regimen
Wii Fit-has a yoga section
Persona series-in these games you can learn to summon demons
LostMagic-cast spells by drawing symbols
Geist-you can be a spirit and possess computers and machines
Eternal Darkness-fight Lovecraftian horrors from an occult book
i may list more when i get some information but everybody it's your turn. remember-
title and why you listed it. have fun and i'll check back often!

I remember in the Necromancer's Lair in Dark Messiah a book said among other things something like:

magic is the setting in motion of universal forces by intention through associative symbols.

That was amazing wisdom for some gore killing game.

Dear Stookie,

I am suprised that *you would still consume this spiritual poison  :| ?!

Especially Bioshock...now that you remind me of it, I remember having seen a number of demonstrations of that game, the atmosphere resembles the low, lower to lowerst astral as best as a computer game can.

The game starts with a plane crash into the open sea and the character escapes to the surface with burning plane leftovers around him and finds a light tower, steps inside and goes down to a hellish underwater city using an elevator.

Now, I find it so ironic when I consider that the man could've actually died in that plane crash BUT then finds himself in his astral-body on the surface of the water in the real-time-zone with the light tower being an astral element fused into the RTZ environment and representing a portal to the lower astral world.

Here's something very interesting I've just found on Google regarding Bioshock 2:

QuoteScout is a Plasmid in BioShock 2. It allows the player to turn into a type of "ghost" at will. Ghost form grants invisibility while moving, hacking, and using plasmids, but weapons  are unusable. The player's physical body will remain in the same place of the initial casting, and is vulnerable to attack. The player's ghost must return to the physical body in order to proceed with normal action. It is essentially a form of astral projection.

Only a limited amount of plasmids can be cast before the user has to return to their body. If the user's body is attacked, the user will automatically break from Scout form and return to it. The horizontal range of Scout is what might be, at most, a few hundred feet in the real world, at which point vision becomes blurred. Continuing further will cause a return to the body.

QuoteFountain of Youth will allow the player to gain health and EVE by standing in water, even while in scout mode, thus allowing the player to cast plasmids even if without any EVE. The regenerating effect only occurs if the Astral Body that you are controlling is standing in water; no EVE is gained if your Real Body  is standing in water while your Astral Body is on dry land.

peace

Yeah, it's a lot of fun! I also like driving games, puzzle games, strategy/action, classic arcade & console (I've got a MAME cabinet), but there's nothing like real deal PINBALL!

The Grand Theft Auto series is an all time favorite of mine too. I have no shame as a gamer.

I like to look at World of Warcraft as planet Earth some tens of thousands of years from now when the planet's creatures have been mutated by post-apocalyptic radiation.  :-D

I suppose that's not too metaphysical. Has anyone played The Witcher? You can learn the ten Sephiroth of the Qabalistic Tree of Life from that game!

YB

EDIT: Half-Life 2 is another good one, with a lot of issues surrounding dark matter, time travel, transPlanckian wormholes, and a mysterious G-Man who reminds me much of some of my own mentors.

Very good physics engine. Puzzle Game.
You can manipulate time and make a ghost-copy of yourself.

Timeshift: You can stop, slow down, and rewind time. Very fun to play with :)

There are some Astral things in World of Warcraft aswell, http://www.wowhead.com/?search=astral
And in one boss fight it says "X shifts into the Astral Plane" and the boss becomes immune to all damage :-D

Soul Reaver had a frighteningly realistic portrayal of all those concepts. Everyone here ought to play it
