I believe that Ireland has so many strong saints because something similiar happened there, St. Columba for one
St Columba was the missionary from ireland who established a monastery on the island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland; he is the one famous for bringing Christianity to Scotland. (although st Ninian had done some preperation there before this).
Are you sure you are thinking of the right person?
Or did you mean St Patrick, St Columba's 'boss'?
