Title: Music
Post by: Selski on September 06, 2006, 18:21:28
I'm a huge fan of music and think it is very important.  I occasionally hear a band that makes me have to buy their CD or just literally stop and listen.

Here is the latest band.  (I am a bit [a lot] behind the times because I didn't realise they won the Mercury prize two years ago - gulp).

To me, this band feels like a drug.  When I first heard them, I had to purchase their CD.  On awaiting their CD, I have had to listen to the music every day.  I feel drawn to the music for some unknown reason.  It makes me wonder whether on another (astral) level, I am linked to those particular people.  I just love it.  Absolutely.

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about and if so, for what music?

I've been listening to Antony and the Johnsons for a few years now and I agree they are fantastic. I've perhaps over played them a bit now, but they still touch a certain 'something'. The song that means the most to me is perhaps their most popular, "hope there's someone".

Regarding other music which touches me like this - I'd really have to think. I generally go for songs rather than bands, but there are some bands I like. Currently listening to yeah Yeah Yeahs a lot atm. Pulled out 'Fever to Tell' recently and have become addicted again. One listen is not a enough to form opinion as some of their songs are deeper than they seem. (I'm not saying these are a band which touch me deeply, they are occupying a decent amount of listening time recently though!)

Ps. Someone people should check out as they are not as big as they should be is polyphonic spree - they are fantastic :D.

Polyphonic Spree are wonderful.  I saw them supporting the Divine Comedy a couple of years ago and bought their album.  Really uplifting stuff.  I love Soldier Girl.  :-D

I Love Divine Comedy too :D. And Soldier Girl is very much a  favorite :). I think it's the song that got me to listen to their other stuff - I also saw them at Glastonbury in '03 - and it was a bakingly hot day, so i lay on the grass with my eyes closed listening to them :D.

Music is a huge part of my life. What I listen to varies a LOT, and I never really plan on listening to anything in particular, just what feels right at the time (unless it's a new CD I just got). I love live music, which to me is always very different from the recorded version. I'm constantly searching out new stuff I've never heard before, and something I used to not like I end up liking later. Sometimes I'm looking for deep lyrics, sometimes just instrumentals. Sometimes a single acoustic guitar, sometimes a programmed drum beat, sometimes heavy metal. I also have albums that are very special to me that I only break out on rare occasions, like Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue".

In other words, music that touches me is whatever inspires me at a given moment. Last night I was really diggin some Dr. John, The Night Tripper. The night before, Burning Spear. This morning was Myka Nyne, Citrus Sessions. I feel like my life has a soundtrack at times...

like stookie music also plays a MASSIVE part of my life. Esp since my whole career is geared towards it.

my mood will often dertime what i listen too. Brian eno is great for the chillaxing times or maybe some beauitful acoustic or piano works.
