A proposed biggy was reduced in power due to an effect discovered. Excess energy in a point source over a calculated level would cause a knock on effect that would end this planet. According to the lecturer, if the worst case scenario occured our galactic arm would be gone. The nearest to this occuring a test from the Russians was recorded and the effect appeared as lightning from nowhere close to the reaction centre. It may be on youtube.

Szaxx , I dont fully understand your post , I do know that the USSR exploded the bigest nuc. bomb at 50 mega tons . It was air dropped from a bomber . Late 50s early 60s some where . Some people thought Cern might create tiny black holes while doing high energy phys. experiments . If created the black holes would go through the earth eating it up until nothing was left , but that has not happened . desert rat
I heard that Edward Teller voiced his concern that a nuclear explosion might set off a chain reaction that would essentially ignite the atmosphere. They went ahead and did it anyway. Despite its inventors worries. :-D :roll:

That name rings a bell. In advanced physics we did daft things like priving Einstein's theory of relativity in half an hour for fun. The maximun power as a point source, its whys and wherefores came up. We knew a saturated magnetic core would dissapear magnetically if more power was added to this circuit and this is a known fact ie the saturable reactor. It was used in early electrical amplifiers.
Apply this to our atmosphere where the energy generated within the nuclear fission centre could exceed that required to convert the air to plasma creating an expanding energy shock wave strong enough that its front would instantly create plasma allowing fusion to continue unabated until the inverse square law of radiating energy fell below this level. The unknown problem was if the air itself started a further fusion splitting atoms into different species and transmutating exothermically where would it end. I think this daunting theory was inspired by the china syndrome.
It was an interesting day.
I seem to remember 110MTonnes having something to do with the calculations. Dont quote me it was the mid 70's and history lessons on war at that time were quite cold.

Not sure what spark transmitters have to do with the energy levels emitted by nuclear fusion. The difference in magnitude is gigantic and thats only the EMF part.

We are confusing several different things hear . As I understand the spark gap transmitter of Tesla's it would build up to a certain voltage and then arc across the spark gap . It went through the primary of a Tesla coil. This has nothing to do with a nuc bomb . In a nuc. explosion ,E.M.F. , electro motive force , ( radio waves ) are produced , along with gama rays , heat , noise , alpha , beta particles , a shock wave , ect. Fermi did build that atomic pile in Chicago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi . On the hole in the ozone layer , it was blamed on chlor-fluro carbons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freon_12 and the E.P.A. does mandate cert. to use it http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/608/technicians/608certs.html and made it illegal to release in to the atsmosphere . What I dont under stand is the ozone layer is like 10 - 15 mi. high and the freon mol. is heaver that air . How does it get up there ? desert rat
