Anyone have an idea as to what this is?

I think what you mean to say here is "speaking in tongues" and here is a description of that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossolalia

If it's not, then I have no idea what "Speaking in tounge" means.

I have only heard of Christian sects doing this and it is supposedly allowing the "Holy Spirit" that lives in all of us, do the talking.

It can be disturbing and unsettling if you are not used to it, which I am not. Though I do believe that it can be likened to using a mantra to go into a trance from a meditative stance. I think it is always faked and forced in the beginning but the person does go into some sort of trance and doesn't have to fake it for long.

It is not proof of anything other than a meditative trance to me.
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

It could be remembering a lang. from a past life . Once    I was at a church that practeced this , this guy in front of me was doing this. To me it sounded like he was mumbling .   desert rat

There is also records of people speaking in tongue when being tortured or executed. It may be caused by a dissociation from logical speech mechanisms either brought on by raw fear or other dissociative mechanisms.

Whenever I've heard it used in evangelical services it seems very 'put on'... and I can do a mean 'Glossolalia' impression... which for me goes a long way into thinking it is just impersonated from one to another. A meme.
