A question for people in the web design business:

When looking to hire someone new, do you want to see a portfolio that follows the trends and has things like a blog/interactive features, perhaps a lot of Flash and roll-overs and is "Web 2.0"-ish? Or would you rather see a book which focuses on clean, simple, readable/legible design?

I'm looking to get back into the field and want to re-design my portfolio to target better what design companies/hiring managers are looking for, but at the same time I don't want to seem like I'm copying everyone else, or "selling out."

Thanks,

Jen

Depends on the website, really. Is the website connected to a database? If so, what kind? Will you be using ASP? JSP? That sort of thing requires readable and easy to maintain code with lots of comments. After that, it depends on what the company thinks the interface should look like.

It's a pretty broad subject, really. Best to know lots of XHTML with CSS and a few scripting languages like ASP and JavaScript.

Gah! Too much. Look at the job boards and find out there!

As is said above, it really depends what area of web design you are looking at getting back into. Would it be purely design (graphical and layout) or would there be some client-side/server-side coding involved (php, actionscript (flash), java, asp etc) with possible database connectivity (mysql, ms-sql etc)?

I see what you're saying...I'm mainly a designer...

Thanks for the help. :)
