Adaptation:

Charlie Kaufman is an excellent writer, adaptation is by far one of the best movie's I have ever seen. The way he incorporates so much humanity into the movie is just amazing.

Hmmm... i think i'm going to have to go with The Last Samurai. That movie just moved me like no other movie has.

I have to give mention to a couple of others though. Waking Life and The Matrix Revolutions. Both excellent in my opinion!

This is hard because I have favorites in different categories such as science fiction: Blade Runner. In the western category The Outlaw Josey Wales, and in the mystery genre there are many but the movie Chinatown stands out. These are all movies that came out a few years back but I'd recommend them anyway.

Bladerunner is a wonderful choice, however I never was very drawn to the director's cut ending, where (supposedly, I have made it a point to never watch it) Deckard finds out that he too is a replicant.

Interestingly, it was Harrison Ford who insisted on the original ending, claiming it had to be that way for character empathy, which I agree with completely - at least, as a human.  ;)

Another favorite movie of mine is Joe Versus the Volcano.

Yeah, it depends on the categories...
Right now, "The Dead Poet Society" just popped into my mind...

I would vote for "the lord of the rings". Because it was really a challenge to make it and it was a success. (I liked the first part the most though).

I would agree that Bladerunner (the directors cut) is utterly, utterly awesome, especially atmospherically as the most awesome
SF movie ever made.

As for the standard edition, apparently, mainstream american audiences didn't understand what was going on (DOH!) so that Harrison Ford was required to do the voice over, apparently, he was so ticked off at having to do this, he recorded it in the most boring monotone imaginable.
For all our sakes, this was removed for the directors cut.
The movie is much better this way.
Also removed was the stupid tacked on 'happy ending' which had both Deckard and Rachel driving off into the nice bright sunlight, totally destroying the oppressive impact of the film and undermining its impact. Suddenly we see that everything's ok as the rest of the world is lovely and sunny and clean, it was only LA that was fu**ed up!

Again, this was due to mainstream US audiences who in general like 'happy endings' in their films. The thing is, Bladerunner was never really a 'mainstream' movie, and is all the better for it.

An earlier poster said that they were never drawn to the directors cut and had avoided seeing it. You have got to see it! The directors cut is the movie restored to Ridley Scott's original intention. Watch it and I'm sure you'l agree that it elevates what is still a very good film, into a true masterpiece. Yes, it is dark and oppresive and perhaps even depressing, but that is its dark beauty; the standard edition with its crap 'happy ending' ruined this quality.

PS
The last samurai
What the f**k was going on in that movie?
Talk about messing with history. The reality was that japan DID go looking for a super-power to model itself on in the late 19th century, but it sure as hell WASNT the USA, the super-power in the 19th century was Britain. Japan on purpose modeled itself on the British parilamentary democracy system. The idea that they would go to America for advice (which was still a backwater at that time) is ridiculous.
In fact, Japan's political system is STILL based on the british system (and they drive on the left, hehe!)

Yeah i know, i understand it's not historically accurate, but that didn't matter to me. It was good regardless of being fact or fiction. For me anyway [:P]

it's a toss up between Pi and donnie darko
as below, so above

Reason

Here are some of the best movies I have ever seen in the various categories.

Shawshank Redemption
Grave of the Fireflies
Pirates of the Caribbean
LOTR
Star Wars
Matrix
What About Bob?
Tombstone
Finding Nemo
Serendipity
Winged Migration
Cruel Intentions

If you haven't seen Grave of he Fireflies then I would highly recommend it.  Ebert loves this movie too, he has it on his top 100 great movies if that means anything, i.e., it is up there with Citizen Kane and The Godfather.

Moonburn33

finding nemo was a good movie- but it was hardly in the list of the best of all time movies.

i also like the red violin.  that movie wasn't bad.  and like water for chocolate(subtitles)
as below, so above

kiauma

The red violin was an awesome story - even if it didn't have a happy ending.

I must be stupid: how could i forget the Bladerunner and the The Dead Poet Society? I think that i saw such movies at so much time ago that almost i forget it! Indeed, these movies match or overdrive Matrix Realoaded. Of course that this last one it is great because it is a good way to realax my mind: nice story, nice action and nice soundtrack.

In the horror category i would choose blairwitch or a movie like the ninth door (is that the name in english?). Of course that Dracula, from Bram Stoker it is a great movie, we cannot forget this one!

For comedy the top of the top are the fabulous Monthy Python! Jesus, they are really funny! The last movie that i saw from then i was crying....big tears in my face because i couldnt stop laghing! Really nice!

Mr.Bean series are other good choice! Fantastique (not so much for the movie)!

Well, there are others nice movies like the training day or fight club and even more that i am not remembering now.
I love you!

kiauma

Mr. Bean is a comic genius, but I agree you really have to see his series to get his best.  The moview were funny, but I think he lost quite a bit when he 'went hollywood'.

Yes, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is an all-time best comedy.

One movie I really love is an old B sci-fi called 'Dark Star'.  Despite it's dated appearance, loose script and sloppy acting, I always loved it, and watch it every few years.  Only recently did I think to scrutinize the credits, and found that it is John Carpenter's first movie!  It's not horror though, in fact some of the twists and ideas are really entertaining, IMO.

Another movie that often comes to my mind when I think of great movies is Fellini's '8 1/2'.  Classic.  His 'Julliette of the spirits' was pretty good too.

'2001: A space Odyssey' is one of my faves.  ANother one, which I think will endure, is AI.  That is truly a modern fairy tale.

I am so stupid!! How could i forgot: any movie with Monica Belluci, or Catherine Zeta Jones, Liv Tylor, Nicole Kidman, Catherine Blanchtte (you got the idea!) it is great[:D][:D]...just kiding
I love you!

Gandalf

Kazbadan_

Hey, I'm glad you mention 'Mr Bean' (the original series and the movie).
Rowan Atkinson is a comic genius IMO, and ranks somewhere near Monty Python.
Have you seen his other series 'Blackadder'? that is REALLY funny!
(although quite different from 'Mr Bean'!).

"Big Trouble in Little China"

I wonder if I can mention a tv series here, ok its not a movie, although there was a movie made of it.

This is TWIN PEAKS, an early 90's series, (aired 1990/1991), and imo is quite simply the best tv series ever made, although the dim minded company execs at the time didnt get the brilliance and cancelled it after its second season.

This show was groundbreaking and paved the way for later shows, esp. the x files (which creator Chris Carter openly admited was partly inspired by TP), and the later high quality shows of the 90s.

It is also one of the most quotable shows ever made, where in some cases every line is inspired! And the music!

Its just so good that i'm going to have to have a damn fine slice of cherry pie and another great cup of black coffee to get over it!

Oh, and all the babes on the show are red hot, apart from one eyed Nadine, but I'm sure someone finds her attractive.

Now, Audrey Horne.... oh my god!

Fenris

Fight Club! "Just let go"

Donnie Darko is a close second, and recently I saw Requiem for a dream, which was profound. I love any movie which lets me enter an exciting head space.

Kazbadan

Gandalf, Twin Peaks it is indee a very good serie. X- Files (the firts series and the middle ones) was very good too. And what about the amazing The Third Rock or The Seinfeld?

They are incredibly funny, it is impossible to be unhappy when seeing an episode of Seinfeld or Third Rock!!

I think i should give many points to Simpsons, the best animation serie i saw until now (maybe not the best for child but the best for adults...at least me!).

I dont like tv but  sometimes it is possible to see really good tv shows as the ones mentioned above. At least in Portugal the qualitie of free** TV it is disgusting. Thats not something completly bad, because with so much bad tv now my mind is uncapable to be in front of a tv for more than 10 minutes, really! And that is good because i am not a tv-dependent. The other side of the coin is the bad qualitie of TV: big brother, novels, stupid quickly-win-tv-shows, etc.

**i dont know the exact expression in english: in Portugal you can have many channels, if you buy an parabolic antenna or pay per months some money. Besides that we only have four stupid (well, the fourth one is good) channels!!
I love you!

Kazbadan

Wich moviewould you vote as being the best ever seen by you? and why?

Well, i think i should vote Matrix Reloaded. Why: first i must see that i am not the kind of people that loves philosophycal movies (the ones with great messages etc) because messages that are important for life i learn it from my own experience and from great masters (Jesus, Budha, and other great budhists masters). So, movies are just a piece of entertainment, something to amuse my mind, not to disturb it with kind of psyco-shocking movies.

Matrix Reloaded fits perfectly on this category: it have a nice story (ok there are some failures but at least it is much better that Revolutions) and the action it is just great, with the best fighter scenes that i saw until now.

Now, wich movie would you vote? And why?

I love you!
