The Astral Pulse

Greetings everyone,

Welcome to the new Astral Pulse forums  :D

It has been quiet a task to move the forums with 120,000 posts across operating systems, databases and forums platforms, but here we are.

We are now running on Linux/PHP/mySQL.

The moderators and I do hope that you will enjoy the new forums and thank you for your continuing support.

It's good that forums are running on Linux now, and phpBB is the best BB server for Linux.
But I have a question: Will avatars that are not .gif work now?

As far as I know most graphics formats should work, although I haven't had the opportunity of testing it yet.

If you have any problems with Avatars, please let me know.

small remark for everyone: check your profile, no matter whether you want an avatar or not - you may want to turn of some automatic things like showing signature (if you don't have one), or sending emails when someone replies to a topic that you replied in, etc..

oh and erm cough I hope you don't mind my avatar is slightly bigger than it is actually 'allowed' to be (it's linked from another forum),..
The problem with avatars getting linked from somewhere else may result in occasional avatars that are too big for this layout (144 px width is max) - anyway, as this forum is being so heavily monitored, I don't suppose that will ever be a big problem.

Typical isn't it  :) Everything has been running great until about an hour or go when the hosting center had a network problem!

I was just wondering if it were possible to have more messages viewed per page considering this site to be so bulky. :)

Also it seems pretty difficult to find a particular username profile that's right in the middle of the alphabet...anything to do about this(how do you quickly get to page 350 out of a possible a?

It's great to see the forum back.

I think phpBB is the best choice because its very fast, free and can be easily modded (may i suggest the excellent cash mod (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=94055) ?)

You just have to add after memberlist.php:

?mode=joined&order=ASC&start=X

Where X=page number * 10

  As usual a great job!I notice a big speed improvement over the old forum.Unfortunatly for a computer illiterate old fart like myself it`ll take me more time to figure out how to use it than it took me to learn how to project!

I just have one question - is it possible to implement that most recent posts function with this forum, and if so is there any plan to do it in the future? There are a lot of different boards here, and i don't always have time to search in each and every one for new topics/replies that might interest me. I'm sure some of the others feel the same. It's only minor, and we can make do without it, but i just thought i'd ask.

I will probably modify the forums as we progress. There are actually about 15 mods over the standard PBPBB forums already  :D

In the top right corner, there is an option to "View posts since last visit".

Thanks Adrian - I registered back in June, but couldn't get to the forums much because they wouldn't open properly in my browser (Mozilla). Now it works perfectly, & I'm spending far too much time here catching up!

Yes it is indeed a small world  :)  Actually I have only been here 14 years, before that I was in central England.
