are there kinda mini EEGs for the use at home? it would be interesting to measure my own brain waves during meditation and the medics have something better to do than doing this just becaue i want it so i want to have my own EEG ar maybe to rent one. does anybody here know something like that?

yes there are. I'm not sure of their sophistication when compared to ones in medical use though.

Google should bring up a lot of them. They seem to be fairly expensive for even the most basic models (when i looked a few years back, the cheapest was about £800-900).

Many people are interested in what is called neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback training, a generic mental training method which makes the trainee consciously aware of the general activity in the brain. This method shows great potential for improving many mental capabilities and exploring consciousness. Other people want to do experiments with brain-computer interfaces or just want to have a look at their brain at work.

Unfortunately, commercial EEG devices are generally too expensive to become a hobbyist tool or toy.

The OpenEEG project is about making plans and software for do-it-yourself EEG devices available for free (as in GPL).

The ModularEEG device is made up of two or more EEG amplifiers, and a 6-channel signal capture board that connects to a PC via a standard serial cable. The standard setup has two EEG channels.

The cost of a complete system is 200 to 400 USD. The exact figure depends a lot on where you buy parts from, and whether you buy or make your own electrodes. You do not have to be an electronics expert by any means, but you will need to know how to handle a soldering iron, and be able to read a schematic.
