How easy is it to contact lost loved ones or people you knew that have moved on from this reality once you can project to the "astral"?
I think it can be easy so long as they want to see you as well. But in case they don't, that doesn't mean anything bad. They may be busy or are waiting for the right time to get in touch. Just because they died, doesn't mean they no longer have a life to live! :-D
I guess I'm mainly thinking that once I can project I want to check on family/friends and make sure they're not needing help moving on.

That may be true as well. But remember that you may not be the best one to assist them. I've only very recently saw someone deceased that I knew during a projection but I tried to meet a friend in the past but never could.
I would recommend praying and getting it "out there" that you care and wish the very best for them. I have it on good authority that they get the messages and appreciate every one.
Once you're able to project, I'd be willing to bet that a clear path will be put in front of you. However, I'm still looking for mine. :-D

I hope so
I haven't actively tried myself, but I think it's harder than most think.
Mostly because the emotional ties you have to the individual get in the way.
You need to be able to keep that under control.
MY very first NPR contact was MJ's deceased brother inlaw, Charlie.
He passed about 5 years ago.
Seeing him waiting to greet me was one of the happiest times I experienced in the NPR.
He was a great man, very accomplished and someone I had the upmost respect for.
I think we meet up with lost loved ones more than we realise, We just do not always recognise them, as we only currently remember them in their "earthly form", which is shed when we expand to the next level.
It is only those who have not fully excepted that they have moved on that still retain an image of their "earthly form".
We are the actors of creation, We play many parts, in many forms.
Though we can touch other realms in our travels we are still bound to our earthly form and ideals, Our "human forms" anchor/centre us to this reality we are experienceing now,
Each "actor" is more than the character he is now playing.
